Played Saturday 3/19 in a 16-man scramble tourney. Course was in fair shape overall, with no part standing out as either outstanding or bad. The greens were a little too bumpy, the fairways were pretty firm and a bit patchy, the rough was preferable to fairway lies in a lot of instances. No marshal or beverage cart to be seen. It was a long round, 5.5 hours, but that was to be expected due to the tournament. This course, at $49 to ride on weekends, is priced a little too steep for what you get, but I can think of a few places that are worse. Don't expect the world and you won't end up disappointed.

No wait... it is not the arrow but the Indian... sooo watch out for beginners on this very tight course. You will be hearing/yelling "FORE" in the upper 20s...

The tee boxes are decent, the fairways are just meh, and the greens are somewhat bumpy... HOWEVER! It is a course that gives you self confidence. An extremely flat and walkable course. I mean we all know golfers aren't exactly known for their Herculean physique... Paging John Daly...

So my top 5 reasons why I love Willowick

1. It's the oldest golf course in OC.. aww you're part of HISTORY!
2. Cheap rate and you can definitely sneak in a 12 pack.. it's not your fault the cart girl does not exist here.
3. Flat and good for esteem building
4. Walkable course, so you're not lying when you're telling your lady love that you're out for a "walk."
5. And the piece de resistance... for $29.99 you get 4 green fees, and 8 buy one get one free! HOLLA! But you gotta act now to get this amazing deal! But wait! There's more! just kidding... that's already a pretty d%mn good deal ya cheap b*st%rd s..

I'm sorry, but if you said under, you haven't played at Willowick. Combine very tight holes with beginners equals...."you better have a quick juke move". We heard FORE 24 times....and probably a dozen times we didn't hear FORE but should have!

Besides that, this course is slow slow slow. You're talking about average 5.5 hour rounds on weekends. No marshalls.. no cart girls. You're out here to hack it? Get me.

However, the course is easy to walk and it makes you feel good about yourself. Knowing those expectations, you should have a decent time. Oh yah, don't get into the sand...brutal.

A good beginners course on a weekday, or if you can get a deal online, not worth the full price. Very slow play on the weekends, no GPS, no cart girls, Marshall is almost never around. You get a good feel for what a course in Tijuana, Mexico would sound and look like. Oh and watch out for neighborhood teenagers taking a shortcut through your fairway. I still enjoy playing this course, good for my ego, good for my handicap, very easy course.

Willowick is a straight forward but enjoyable course especially when you need to work on your game. The greens are medium speed and roll decent. The fairways and rough are in good shape. The bunkers are good to fair. Many of the tee boxes are not level. The course has a grass driving and 3 practice putting greens. The club house has a bar and restaurant with televisions for post round enjoyment. The staff is always pleasant. The low green fees make it worth playing.

Played Friday, 6/2, in a 3 group, 4-man scramble tourney. Tee time for the first group was 2:00, but they weren't able to tee off until almost 2:45. I won't review pace of play, due to the tourney situation. Some of the tee boxes were decent, others were very bare, and most were not level. Fairways were in very good to excellent condition, and the rough was great as well (lush, about 2", very few bare patches). Wasn't in any bunkers, so can't comment too much there, but they looked a little firm. The greens were pretty fast, but far bumpier than I have ever experienced at Willowick, and did not roll true. Lots of unrepaired ball marks. Will probably wait a while before returning, hopefully they work on the greens a bit. ***Important note: This course is in a pretty bad neighborhood, and the previous time I played here I was attacked on the 17th hole by a "local" who jumped the fence claiming he was hit by a ball. Unfortunately I was the closest person to him and had to deal with his juvenile gangster attitude. Please be wary of your surroundings at this course and be ready for anything when you are near the boundary fences. ***

CROSSFIRE!! NEED TO WEAR A HELMET! Extremely poor design...I felt like a golf ball could hit me at any time. Old and outdated course, have not invested a single dollar since 1976. Cheap no doubt, but you get what you paid, six hour round, smelly starter house, devastated driving range...the only good thing was the Breakfast Burrito, but it took them 20 minutes to prepare... avoid it!

I putted better today. The greens are in the best shape ever. They just have a few soft spots and discoloration. They will aerify later this month I believe. What a very crowded day today. With tees and greens so close together people forget or don't care about etiquette and drive their cart too close or talk while others are preparing to hit. The group ahead of us was 2 holes behind late in the round. I seem to get bad luck and play behind people like that on this course. But, I can't complain the weather was nice, and I had a free hot dog and chips!!!!
