Played here today as part of a "member for a day" outing featuring Tacos & Beer as the theme. $70 a player with a 10:00 shotgun start. I was grouped with a great threesome of guys and we started on the 7th hole of the Valley nine and then moved to the Vista nine. It wasn't a huge group of players, so we never saw the group ahead and never had anyone within a hole behind us. It was a nice relaxed 4:20 pace with a stop after our third hole for some ridiculously great street tacos. Easily the highlight of the day!
Los Coyotes doesn't have a ton of MFAD outings, but I had a feeling this one was coinciding with their spring maintenance. Of course, they didn't say anything until after everyone had signed up. The email with the final details, had an "oh by the way, we just aerated the greens last week" tacked on at the end. I was just interested in playing the course no matter what, but it was a bummer to play on the recently punched and heavily sanded greens. It also foiled my hopes of playing all 27 holes. The Lake nine was completely closed off today for its aeration.
The greens really didn't play that terribly. As typical with sanded greens, anything coming in low would skip across the surfaces. Anything coming in with any spin at all would stop on a dime, so you really had to adapt based on the shot you wanted to hit. The surfaces were bumpy, but still rolling relatively quickly. It was easy to see that normally the greens are probably the highlight here when in normal condition. I can see them being fast and deceptive. The rest of the course was in good overall shape. Tee boxes were generally very nice. The kikuyu fairways had some thin spots, but I almost always had a great lie. The rough was more hit or miss in terms of lushness, but it was cut down in most areas and not much of a factor. Around the greens, the collars and rough were very well kept. The sand traps were great.
The course itself is just okay. Nothing that spectacular with a handful of interesting holes and a pretty traditional Billy Bell layout. Some holes had somewhat serpentine fairways that I kind of liked the look of. In some ways, the course seemed like a nicer version of La Mirada and local courses of that ilk. Not a must play by any means, but a decent low/mid-level private option. But man, those tacos were good.
