Played 3-27-08. This golf course is a MONSTER right now. I am a 3 handicap and played with another 3 handicap and we have played the course a lot, we both shot 81 and it felt like a 65!

Played 3-27-08. This golf course is a MONSTER right now. I am a 3 handicap and played with another 3 handicap and we have played the course a lot, we both shot 81 and it felt like a 65!
I have NEVER seen the rough this long, thick and just plain brutal here. It is 5+ inches in many parts, absolutely impossible to hit anything but a 9 iron, PW or SW to escape it, and even with these clubs it is no guarantee. One player in our group took 8 (yes, 8) swings at his ball in the rough on no. 1 and couldn't escape, he was 10 yards off the fairway and just picked up. PLEASE make sure you watch the exact spot where your ball goes into the rough because it will sink to the bottom every time. Also, if you can, walk the course, it is cart path only right now and being in a cart completely distorts your idea of where your ball went when you are trying to find it. For practical purposes, on the par 4's if you miss the fairway play it as a par 5, wedge out to the fairway and just try to get on in 3. On par 5's same thing, if you miss the fairway, play safe, wedge out and try to get on in 4. You will save yourself a lot of strokes (and time) doing this. Finally please play the right set of tees, we played with two 120 shooters who played the tips, and by the 8th hole they were so frustrated and angry because it was taking them 10 shots to reach the par 4's and par 5's, it just wasn't fun for them and it was taking them 25 mins. to play a hole. The greens were recently punched, they are still bumpy but have good speed, they will be great in about 2 weeks. The fairways are perfect to hit from, the sand is smooth and the tee boxes are in great shape. This golf course really is the ultimate challenge and gives you an idea as to how tough a US Open really is. Enjoy!

I pretty much agree with the last comments. The greens still need at least another week to get back in shape. I'd imagine why it was so easy to get a tee time today. The fairways were great and the rough is absolutely tough. Any tee shot that finds the fairway do yourself a favor and just get it back in play, you'll save your self some strokes in the long run. I was surprised I only lost one ball in the fairway but a couple of other guys in our group also lost some so keep your eye on it. I thought the sand quality was great. I did notice when we made the turn there was a group at least a hole behind on #15 so there was no marshall present. I do not think the green fees for a non-resident are worth the $$$ right now just because of the greens but for a resident the $49 is unbeatable.

The greens are just about healed from the punching but still play well right now. At the end of March these greens will be in tournament condition. They'll stay that way until the open because most people that play here can't hit them to make a mark, but if you do FIX THE BALL MARK!!!! It is CART PATH ONLY on the south course and the ruff is high and deep so if you have to walk acrossed the fairway to your ball in the ruff TAKE ANOTHER BALL WITH YOU SO WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Plenty of reviewers have noted the difficulty of the rough and the greens, but I really had no appreciation of just how difficult this makes things. You are either on the fairway or in the thicket. No first cut, just grass as thick as a beaver pelt and hungry for balls.

The round took 5 1/2 hours due in large part to the fact that there are groups of people on every hole searching the rough for their tee shots.
The greens actually aren't that bad once you accept that everything breaks towards the ocean, and the course is beyond beautiful. It was 75 degrees and not a hint of wind last Monday. The conditions are immaculate given the amount of play this beast gets. Greens crew is ever present but not intrusive. Frequent flyovers by fighter jets out of Miramar provided a source of awe.

No matter what you shoot, it will be hard to get the smile off of your face when playing Torrey. Bring a lot of cash because the merchandise isn't cheap. $35 for a hat. $18 for a divot tool.

I'm a 14 handicap and I shot 20 over par on the first 9 holes.
The next day I played my home course and shot 7 over on the front.
It's that hard.

Would I do it again for another $180?
Oh yeah!

Ditto, the course can be a beast. I tried to get there early enough on a Saturday to beat the 730 tee time, but beware, 620am wasn't early enough for a single that wanted to play South. Probably before 6a to get out before 9. I got out at 930. North was less than a 30 minute wait all day, but a couple of holes are hosed.

I par'd 1-3, but then found the rough. 2 Pars the rest of the day...the darn grass just gets in your head! You start thinking about it on the tee, and then...it's all over.

Those that play here once or twice a year will notice a couple of big differences. First...they're keeping the rough 3"+ here on out until that first weekend in July. Also, the greens aren't as jumpy as they typically get 2 weeks after the buick! I drained a cuppla 10+ footers that normally wouldn't have had a chance in PoaAnnua. (get it?!)

Oh, for those of you who wait around to get called, they removed the benches from the area in front of the pro shop. Makes it darn inconvenient to chill for 3 hours.

Go play it...now's our opportunity!

The South Course is being transformed into a BEAST. Although the rough was trimmed a bit following the Buick (now 3-4"), a missed fairway is guaranteed to add a stroke. Whatever you do, follow your ball to its final resting place. There were several times our entire foursome searched for a ball seemingly only steps off the fairway.

The course condition is simply magnificent condition. Play now and you'll have a sense for what the U.S. Open participants will face after another 4 months of refinement. Wow.

Great course for a public course. Amazing views with greats holes on the cliffs. Worth the money to play if you are from out of town...a good deal if you are from SD and/or have a resident ID card.

Got off this morning shortly before 9 and it was a great day for golf here. There was minimal wind which helped on some of the longer par 3s and 4s. The starter told us before we went off they cut back some of the rough but this rough was still pretty thick. A couple of guys in our group lost a couple of balls so keep an eye out. I thought the greens had a very good pace to them, I wish they could consistently have this type of pace. The fairways were in great shape and one guy I played with who was from out of town commented how quickly he thought the divots grew in considering the Buick was there last weekend. I was in the sand quite a bit and thought the quality of sand was very good as well. We finished in just about 5 1/2 hrs which is primarily due to everybody looking for balls in the rough. I certainly think the course is worth the fee for a resident and I could probably justify the non-resident rate right now which I rarely say. Just note they have started tearing up the North course to put in the driving range on 10. The tee boxes for 10 have been moved up to the where your drive would land on this hole.
