Played 5/27/2015 at 10:54. Temp in the 70's with light variable wind.

This is one of the three real golf courses run by Duncan Golf Management (Wolf Run and Dayton Valley) and it is the oldest and busiest of the three. $60 during the week (M-Th) and $70 on the weekend (F, Sa and Su).

Course is in very good shape. Greens are smooth and soft enough to leave a ball mark. Fairways and rough are also good. Bunkers have plenty of sand. I really have no complaints about the course conditions. Fairways are generous in width and quite flat (no moguls). Greens are large, many have subtle breaks and you have to be aware of where downtown Reno is since the greens run toward downtown.

I find the course pretty challenging. Layout sits in the foothills just west of downtown Reno. No two holes look the same. Lots of gentle uphill and downhill holes, so club selection is a big deal. Most of the uphill holes have blind greens making course knowledge also a big deal.

I am told the course has a large membership base, so getting an early tee time can be difficult. Staff was very friendly; beverage cart service was often.

Nice putting green and chipping area next to the first tee. Driving range is terrible -- old, hard mats and only about 12 spots. No GPS, but there are a ball washer and a cooler on each cart. Bring you own towel.

Slightly higher green fees than Wolf Run and Dayton Valley, but certainly worth a visit. Updated website has online tee times and a nice course tour that shows each hole.

Played May 11, 2015. 8:30 shotgun tournament. Temp warming up to the 60s with winds freshening into the 20+ mph range.

Hadn't played here is a few years. Course condition was overall pretty good. Greens were pretty much perfect and quite smooth. But very slow - seemed around 8 stimp.

Fairways and rough were patchy. Lots of bare spots. Bunkers looked good. Tees were not good. Lots of bare spots, but pretty level so you could find a spot to peg it.

This is the old Sierra Nevada course which is currently owned by the folks who own Genoa Lakes Resort two miles down the road. This Genoa Ranch course was originally private but the housing market stalled and there were not enough homeowners to keep it private. About 8 years ago, six holes were removed and converted to building lots (which remain just lots, no buildings). Six holes were added, but I am told the new holes are not as good as the removed holes.

Not a bad course. The Genoa Resort course is better. Green fees at both courses are a little high for the area. There are better deals around. Both courses sit in the foothills of the sierras south of Carson City and often get strong winds. But the views are nice.

Service was good. Bar and restaurant were nice. Nothing special. Try to get a deal if you want to play either course.

Played 5/3/2015. 8:24 tee time. Temp around 60 at first, warming into the low 70's. Slight and variable wind. Green fee only $40 currently. Includes cart or you can walk. Generally flat for walkers, but some distance between tees.

Spring has come early to the Dayton Valley. Temps have been generally 10°+ normal with highs in the 70's many days. Grass is growing in most places on the course.

Greens are still the best feature. Very smooth, cut most days and rolled 2/3 times a week. Quite firm, but it is still in the 30's/40's at night so the greens are not in summer condition and rolling around 10 which is slow for this course. You will not complain about the greens -- still the best in NoNV.

Fairways are a different story. A lot of bare spots for some reason, but lots of grass, too. In the two weeks I have been here, the fairways have improved significantly. So I expect very nice fairways by the beginning of June.

Rough is much better with fewer bare spots. Rough is starting to grow out and will be brutal, as usual, as the summer gets here. Bunkers still have a lot of small stones, but are not as firm as they have been in the past. You can explode out of the bunkers with a little practice.
Tees are fine.

Additional background info:
Course owned by Duncan Golf Management (DGM) which is a locally owned family operation. DGM also owns Wolf Run and Lakeridge in Reno. Nice membership program -- for less than $300 per month, you get unlimited play with cart and range balls at all three courses.

GPS is gone. No water jugs on course. And bring your own towels. Parking is very convenient. Range is grass. Nice putting green. Barely adequate chipping area. But if you want to work on your swing or putting, Dayton is a great place to do so.

Staff is friendly. Bar is well stocked. And sodas, ice tea and lemonade are only $1.50 with free refills.

Best new feature: combined tees have come to Dayton. Blue yardage is 6600+ (71.4/129), which is too long if you hit it 225 off the tee. White yardage is about 5900 (67.9/115), which is too short if you hit it 225 off the tee. The course has been rerated by the NNGA for combined tees: 10 blue and 8 white -- yardage about 6200 (69.3/123). New scorecards should be here about June.

Something I usually forget: this course is very lady friendly. Around 5100 from the Silvers (good tees for super seniors) and, I am told, quite challenging but fair. Lots of lady play at this course and a very active ladies group on Tuesday mornings.

As always, highly recommended. Especially at $40 compared to $55-$65 for other DGM courses in Reno. And don't miss Senior Thursday at $25.

Played 4/12/2015 at 6:15, temp in high 60's, winds light and variable. Played with my regular group -- Yoohwan, Rick and Kathlene.

NO GPS anymore. According to the starter, Joey: Sprint provided the GPS device. Paid for by selling advertising to third parties. Advertisers weren't paying Sprint (or Sprint possibly mismanaged collection of payment). Sprint removed GPS devices. Probably same reason GPS is missing from Red Rock Arroyo and Aliante and other local courses, I'm sure.

[This is a serious problem being ignored by the Main Stream Media. I understand that the drought and transgender bathrooms are important matters, but we're talking NO GPS here folks. Golfers are people, too.]

Rob1563's review from yesterday was spot on. The Palm course is a fun course to play and has some challenging shots even though it is not very long. You have to avoid hitting the ball in bad spots -- a little misdirection in places results in the ball rolling off into the desert areas.

Playing tip: #12 is a medium short, downhill par 3 with a long green and a large rock just to the right of green. Today it was lasering at 137 to a red flag with the Blue tees up a little. If you hit a 9 iron very solid and straight and land it about 15' below the hole, it will roll straight into the cup. Highlight of my year, so far.

Quick update on a couple items:

Greens are very fast -- seem to be at least 12.
GPS is gone from carts. Vendor wanted to raise the fee; course said no thanks. So bring your own.

Otherwise, course conditions are very good. Still recommended.

Played 3/26/2015 at 12:45, temp in 70's with some light swirling wind.

First I have to thank my business associate who picked up the tab for the entire foursome -- yay! Mikey. Rack rate is $500 plus min. $50 per player for the caddie. One caddie for each foursome. Local resident rate only $350 (no senior rate, no twilight rate, no replay discount -- never hurts to ask).

Course conditions were excellent. Never had a bad lie. Greens were represented as being 10 stimp but seemed slower. Course is green everywhere -- no dormant bermuda on this course. Nice views of the high rise hotels.

We played the Brown tees. 6464/rating --/slope --. I was told Mr. Wynn refuses to have the course rated and sloped. Next shortest tees are 5556. IMO, a set of tees around 6100 would be better for us mid teen handicappers. Par 70 with 10 par fours -- seven are over 400 yards and one is 395. Lots of long second shots. There was not a single hole that I would consider easy.

Small range with mats and a net about 50 yards from the tees. Small putting green. Towels are provided; as are ice chests with water and soft drinks. No GPS -- caddie with laser range finder provides your yardage.

I think this course is really hard. Each green is elevated, with deep bunkers both along the fairways and around the greens. Greens are predominantly bermuda and very firm. But greens were fair with modest undulations. My guess is that the slope would be in the upper 130's.

Probably one of the three best courses in Las Vegas (along side Shadow Creek and Cascata, neither of which have I played yet in case Mikey is reading this). Nice place for a high roller who wants to get some fresh air and needs a break from the High Limit area.

Scorecard and photos coming soon.

Played 3/15 at 7:15. Temp in the 60/70's, light winds.

Haven't played the Mountain since last fall. Course is in very nice shape.

Front side greens were somewhat bumpy, while back side greens were quite smooth (? -- it's not like the front side is in a different time zone than the back side). Greens were relatively slow (around 9 it seemed) which is fair because the nearby mountains affect the putting a lot.

Fairways and rough were great, bunkers were soft and tees were generally good. This course gets a lot of play. Both the Mountain and the Palm are really good right now -- recommended if you are coming to town for Hoops Tournament. But make your tee times early, as the town is going to be really busy the next couple of weeks.

Shout out to the weekend starter Joey -- he's the best at moving people out of the staging area and a good guy.

Played 2/26/2015 at 9:30, temp in mid 60's, winds light.

Played Sunrise/Canyon nines.

Sunrise was OK. At least the course was green from overseeding in the fall. Fairways, rough and greens had grass -- although there were plenty of bare spots especially in the fringes.

Canyon was terrible. Dormant bermuda in rough and fairways. No sign of any overseeding except on the greens which were like those on the Sunrise.

Very little maintenance activity going on. Did not appear that the greens had been cut that morning so they were slower than I have seen before. Place was very quiet for a good weather Thursday morning. Ladies club had a shot gun at 9AM, but only about 12 players. We were a foursome; only saw two other groups, both twosomes. So POP was very nice.

We've had a mild winter in LV this year, so most of the other courses are nice and green (with at least one exception -- Painted Desert). It seems Spanish Trail has no money to spend on taking care of the course, which is a shame since this used to be a wonderful place to play.

Played 2/15/2015 at 8:00, temp around 70° with a little wind.

Been many years since I played Legacy. It's located in Green Valley and easy to get to as it is about a mile off the 215 freeway.

Good parking (although not quite enough with overflow parking on a grassy area), very nice clubhouse, pro shop and restaurant. Although there are mats, the range is large. Nice putting area, but the practice green was quicker than the course greens. Range is adjacent to first tee with one person doing double duty as range ball guy and starter guy.

POP was good, cart service was very regular and course marshal made the rounds.

Ice chest and ball washer on carts. Water jugs on the course. Wet towels provided. GPS on carts, but the same crappy system they have at Painted Desert.

The course greens were annoyingly slow. All bermuda and pretty smooth. Would probably be better after using a lawn mower and a roller. Pretty evident that the greens have been spray painted to add some greenness to their color. But the painted area was at least dry.

The fairways are acceptable. They are cut to a uniform height, but have some brown spots. Rough was terrible unless you like dormant bermuda. Bunkers are generally deep -- some have sand and some don't.

The teeing areas are noticeably bad. Very few flat spots to stand and very little grass to hit from.

Layout is good. Many fairways set below the level of the tees and greens so shots toward the rough roll back toward the fairway. Housing lines most fairways and is quite close -- lots of netting and protective screens.

The weekend OB card rate is $55 which is higher than the course conditions warrant. Just an OK place to play, but I wish they would spend a little money on maintenance.

Played 2/7/2015 at 7:50 AM. Temp in 60's; occasional light winds. Weather is unusually warm for LV for early February which makes for great golfing conditions.

Update from November review. Course is much improved. All fairways are open with no cart restrictions. Most of the bare spots in the fairways and rough are gone. Grass has grown in nicely. Good lies in the fairway and rough is getting thicker and more challenging.

Greens are really good. Bunkers are OK. But many of the tees are quite bare and some are not too level.

Driving range is pretty bare so only good for loosening up. Suggest you avoid the practice putting green just outside the pro shop as it wasn't mowed and not representative of the greens on the course.

I can give Arroyo a very positive recommendation if you are looking for a place to play.

Played 2/5/2015 at 11:10 -- temp mid 60's with just a touch of wind. Conditions were pretty much perfect for a day of golf. Played with JohnnyGK and Rob 1563, along with visitor Manny (but not that Manny).

BEST greens I have played in Las Vegas this winter. SMOOTH. Stimped at 10.5 per sign in pro shop (nice touch; wish more courses would take the trouble to measure the speed and then post it since I suspect many players like to think they are playing fast greens like the pros play). Green speed was perfect for the conditions. Greens have a lot of Poa Annua and are firm. So not many ball marks. I like Poa Annua greens much better than Bermuda greens. They are much smoother.

Greens are tough to read. Lot of subtle breaks and every green does not break toward downtown, though many do. Very challenging. Did I mention how smooth the greens were?

Fairways are nice and green with a smattering of brown spots. Rough is dormant Bermuda during the winter. But the rough around the green has been overseeded so there is plenty of green grass to chip from if you miss the green. This is a nice thing as not every course in LV overseeds around the green for the winter. And no bare spots in the fringes.

Bunkers were interesting. Very fine grained sand which was not very deep. So no plugged lies and you could hit any club you desired out of the fairway bunkers since the lips are not very high.

Lots of elevation change on this course. And quite long from the white tees. 6356, rating 70.7 at par 72 and slope 136. Really good layout with lots of variety. Challenging but fair. And like playing at Paiute, beware of Rio Secco on a windy day.

Johnny GK took a ton of photos. There are many great views here especially those looking down on the Strip.

Rob1563's review is excellent and hits all the items I omitted. No GPS on the carts, but the $5 yardage book is a good investment. Class operation and a wonderful place to play.

Very enjoyable round with very enjoyable company. Big shout out to Director of Marketing Mark for spending a little time with us over a beverage and talking about the course.

Played 1/17/2015 at 8:12, temp in the high 50s, little wind, $49 player card rate. Pace of play just under 4 hours. Pretty good for Saturday morning.

Been about a year since I played here. Typical winter conditions for Painted Desert.

Greens were excellent. Somewhat slow, about 10 stimp, but very smooth. No bare spots, firm with soft areas -- you can leave ball marks so bring you divot fixer.

Fairways are not good. Patches of green rye grass among the dormant bermuda -- splotchy seems to be the right word. Underlying ground quite firm, so the club bounces. Rough is better; there is more rye grass. But still quite inconsistent. Bunkers are ok, but lots of dormant bermuda around the sand so wayward shots collect into the bunkers.

On the holes with water, the coots are here. Bring you towel and watch where you walk.

Beverage service very regular. Water jugs on many tee boxes. Restaurant and pro shop staff are pleasant. Range balls are extra, mats only and they are pretty worn out. Bring you own towel. Putting green is large and rolls like the greens on the course.

GPS remains a joke. Gives accurate yardage, but the hole views are like a Google Earth view from about 1500'. Hard to see any detail. No commercials, though.

One comment about pin locations: all flags are yellow. Most of the green are slighted elevated (about two feet or so above the fairway), so you can't really see the bottom of the flag stick. Unless you have played here a few times, hard to tell how deep the pins are on the green.

Course is harder than it looks. Fairways tend to be narrow. Lots of desert areas. Well bunkered with many holes having hidden bunkers near the green. On the water holes, the water is in play. From the middle (black tees), rating is 70.7 (scorecard 69.9 is incorrect) and slope 125.

While a pleasant place to play, the current fairway conditions militate against a recommendation. Hopefully, the grass will grow in soon.
