Used a coupon so for all intent purposes the price was right for two -- so rating based off of 'get what you pay for' scenario.
Spoke with the pro shop prior to booking...was informed course had been aerated last week of October and in good shape. Starter was pleasant as always, and let us head on out early since no one was on the tee box. Was advised the course was pretty full ahead of us and could be slow at the turn. Your head needs to be on a swivel on this course due to cross hits by others over into adjacent fairways throughout. Bunkers weren't the greatest, but adequate to get the ball out. Pace of Play was just over 4 hrs, and we didn't encounter slowing until Hole #6, with lengthier waits on the back 9 (10/11/12). Fairways were iffy/not consistent at all in the conditions between thin/new growth resulting in one minute on a hittable tuft of fairway and the next in a barren/tight lie. Greens were a bit bumpy and recovering from disease, and plenty of unrepaired ball marks, resulting in medium/slow askew rolls. Sometimes I truly don't understand whether a golfer's headupdabuttitus in lack of taking care of etiquette items (such as raking up bunkers, fixing ball marks on the greens, divot mix in the fairways, and picking up trash) is an oversight, or simply because they felt the course wasn't worth the attention?? Either way it is a major frustration factor to say the least. Just because a course may be struggling doesn't mean the usual course etiquette shouldn't be observed. (Just my tirade and two cents). Yes, course needs a little more work, to be really enjoyable, but I believe they are trying. Would I play it again for the price...Yes, but not anytime real soon. Just this golfin gals opinions.

Played Castle Creek for the first and likely the last time. Course is dried out with hard pan fairways, uneven tee boxes, terrible greens that ran like concrete, and sand traps like mud bowls. Don't waste your money or time on this course. Too many other options for $40 to $50 dollars in North San Diego County.

I played Sunday, June 30th at around noon and paid $32 which is just about the max I'd pay to play here. It was my first time playing here and I had a fun time. There isn't a driving range but there is a warm up cage to hit into. There are also 2 practice putting greens. We played from the blue tees and I found them to be mostly dirt with patches of grass. Several of the tees had non level portions but I was usually able to find a section that was acceptable to hit off of. The fairways were ok with some thin and bare patches. The greenside bunkers were a bit crusty but had consistent coverage and played surprisingly decent. I didn't experience any fairway bunkers. The rough was very inconsistent with several bare areas. The best part of the course were the greens. They were very nice and green. They held shots and rolled true. The layout was basically what you see is what you get. There were a good mix of holes with some par 4s stretching out 400+ yards while others offered drivable (<300 yard) opportunities. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the 3 holes to start out the back 9 are quite challenging. They are pretty straight away but tight and tree lined. The starter was nice and friendly and the cart girl was as well. She came around several times on the front 9 but I didn't see her on the back. It was a warm day and one major gripe that I had was that they only offered up a cup of ice when we requested a bag of ice to keep the beers we purchased cold. The restaurant is a nice place to catch a game and drink a few pints of microbrews which they had a good selection of. All in all, it was a fun experience but it'll probably be a longtime before I comeback.

I played the course on 5-15-2013. I found the greens to be in great shape, especially compared to a year ago. The fairways were very dry in spots, but was told of a well problem that was just fixed so most water was used on greens for a couple of weeks. I plan on playing again in a couple of months to see if any improvement has been made. The sand traps were wet and in some cases hard and mainly dirt. The tee boxes were the most disappointing item about the round. They were not very flat in most cases and needed work. I did find the staff friendly and enjoyed a 4 hour round which I really appreciated. The course design is very old school and has a very difficult start to the back nine with 3 tree lined holes running next to each other. I enjoyed the course and would recommend it for anyone looking for a challenge at a reasonable price.

5/26/19 - rstang06(aka hubby) and I played today at 1107 (Using UnderPar.com $60 for 2 Deal). Was kind of an impromptu - let's go play day, so didn't get much in the way of warm-ups; which kinda sorta affected my 1st 4 holes. Went out as a 3-some with a nice gentleman playing in with us. Fairways and Bunkers were somewhat disappointing. Greens were only thing I can mention of any significant impressive level. Rolled fairly true/med-med fast. Apparently there were (2) back-to-back tournaments that went off before we arrived, and I must say the greens didn't show it too bad. A couple cups were a little worse for the wear; but it was obvious the tournament players were very conscientious in repairing their ball marks. I only had to fix a couple here and there. Bunkers were in poor condition! A couple looked flooded out/dried up hard pack. Fairways were fairly tight, browned out in areas, and hard to get a good hit off of. Certainly in need of some water. A positive - you certainly got distance from roll outs. 15th Tee box for Blue/Black was worst I've seen on any course I've played recently. Where Was the Grass????? At least the red tee box had some. Rough was adequate, but always bear in mind rattlesnakes and poison oak are prevalent so always proceed cautiously, as with most courses this time of year. Pace of play was good up until the turn (where the typical jam up occurs). Nightmare holes 10/11/12...those who've played this course are nodding your heads right about now. Long/narrow/tree-lined and houses on the right of 12. Criss/Cross Applesauce of balls and golfers all over these 3 holes. Pace picked back up and we finished the round in about 4.5-5 hrs. Course amenities were adequate/well maintained. Cart Girl - very busy with a packed course (saw her once; but was very friendly). Starter was courteous and pleasant to chat with. :) This course has 2 practice putting areas. (1) adjacent to the 1st tee, and (1) up behind the clubhouse. No Driving range, but there is a make-shift one-person hitting net; adjacent to the 1st tee as well. Neat Feature: They have a 'Hole-in-One' Prize Hole = #15 (Par 3) --- Yes, the hole with the horrible Blue/Black tee box; but worth a Go!? The quaintly named 'Gopherhole' Clubhouse is average/with a Great selection of micro-brews, and scrumptious food; of special note: their Fish n Chips!! No GPS on the carts, so be sure to bring something to help with calculating your distances. Adequate deal for your conservative dollar. Final thoughts...Water Water Water and Sand Sand Sand, would elevate this to a 'hole' new level of play :) Oh, and a Heads Up...sign in the Pro Shop indicated course maintenance June 1st.

2nd time playing this course. Great layout. Some really interesting holes (short par 4s) really long Par 5s (600 yards plus).

Conditions on the greens were great - running fast and divot free, but that's about it. Dormant fairways, bare spots, thin bunkers. Lots and lots of trees. Back 9 you need to have the skill of a surgeon on the tee shots.

Enjoyed playing here but not worth more than 40...

Excellent customer service...very friendly and helpful.

Played twice ($20.00 replay fee) on 11/4/12 with a buddy of mine and we had a great time. We played from the tips which made each hole significantly longer than the middle tees. This course is lined with plenty of trees and is much longer than your average course, boasting a 624 yard par 5, complimented by many long par 4's. The back 9 has a different feel than the front, with the first three holes (10,11,12) challenging any golfer with long, narrow, tree-lined fairways. No driving range on this course, which is a mark against it, but the bar and grill is awesome, the staff is friendly and the course is challenging and fun. Since it is tucked away in the hills of Escondido, keep an eye out for the occasional coyote and take a second to enjoy the beautiful landscape surrounding the course. We found a deal online to play a Sunday morning for $45, which made it an amazing deal. I'll play here again for sure.

Decided to give it a go again. Last played Labor Day last year and had a TERRIBLE experience as the conditions were terrible. Today we managed to benefit from a $28 round w/cart rate at 1pm. Pro Shop staff was pleasant. Was excited to give the course another go and quickly became very disappointed once again. The fairways had been punched and the clods of 1 in diameter by 3 inch long hard clods of residuals from it were allllll over the fairway...so even if you ripped one you were ricocheting off clods of dirt; forget about a decent roll out. :( On the 2nd hole there were 2 tractors/mowers driving all around and it was very dusty and annoying. Virtually impossible to get a decent rollout on any hole. According to a friend (server at the restuarant), the fairways had been punched about 1-2 weeks earlier. The bunkers were Terrible...sand?? what sand??? BUT at least the greens were much better than the last time. Soft/so retained footprints, ran slow, but were 100% better, but unfortuantely players who had gone through earlier were not fixing their divots. No range warding allll day. Sigh! How hard is it to fix them when you make them? I must've fixed 3-4 on every hole. We saw the cart girl on hole 3 and that was it for the rest of the afternoon. Snack shop was closed. Wind was crucial in how you played the legendary 10/11/12 holes. Tee boxes were fine. good. Pace of play was typical. Still all in all it wasn't a total disappointment. Think next time though (regardless of the cost), we'll call to double check the status of conditions before we comit to buy. (Lost 2 balls) :( Ended the round with a cold one at the Gopher Hole (retaurant) and ordered the Fish n Chips dinner - VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY good. So you see, there are positives to our outing :)
