Spanish Trail Country Club, it’s not very often a golf course that was once considered one of Las Vegas’ most exclusive country club’s is now open for public play. But financial struggles over the last few years forced the course into bankruptcy in February 2012. Well, the dust has settled and Par 4 Management is now working with Spanish Trail Country Club to help the course get back on its feet again. There is no telling how long Spanish Trail CC will continue to allow public play but while it does, I recommend giving the course a try.

The first thing you’ll notice is it’s a high scale country club. From the moment you enter the property through the guard gate, are greeted by extremely caring staff and step foot in the magnificent club house. Once you hit the course, you may be concerned about the visual dryness, but that’s to be expected for a while during the transition to recovery, HOWEVER, something the course did continue to maintain exceptionally was the greens. The greens are pure, roll like a pool table and hold shots. They are some of the best putting surfaces I’ve experienced all year. Regarding the fairways, although dry they did have a nice base to them so compressing the ball and hitting clean shots was not a problem (they just don’t look that pretty). Regarding the rough, brown and thin at times adjacent to the fairways but around the greens not as bad. The tee boxes were very level and well maintained. The sand traps could use some more TLC as they contain firm sand.

As it relates to the layout (Robert Trent Jones Jr Design) I feel it is exactly what most golfers want these days, loaded with risk-reward holes, relatively flat with excellent site lines off the tee, generous landing areas from the tee, interesting green complexes undulating and often surrounded by bunkers, some beautiful water features included forced carries on approach, ponds, streams and water falls…it’s a perfect blend of fair yet challenging. Personally I only got to play the Canyon 9 and tour the Lakes 9. I heard the Sunrise 9 is easier. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed the layout of the course. I snapped some photos of the Canyons 9 and a couple holes of the Lakes 9. Hopefully, when I’m back in Vegas I’ll get to play the Lakes 9 and Sunrise to get more photos and review.

This is a very fun course I recommend playing.
