played on sunday 6-5. 2nd time playing this course in three weeks. I dont think this course is that hard, but the greens always gets me. Many three putts. Played in between a big tournament, but the tournament seem liked it was organized well. Only complaint, was the group ahead of us(non tournament group). No marshall to push this group. Found a tee time for a great price, so wasnt too mad about the slow play. Still a great day to play golf.

Played on a whim this afternoon at 3:00 after seeing a GolfNow special for $35. Wow! Super-cheap for this course, less than half price. Finished in 4 hours. Course conditions were good. Tee boxes are level and well-trimmed with few divots. Fairways are either superb or still have verticutting lines depending on which hole you're on; the worked-on fairways are still pretty good though. Rough was very lush and even. Bunkers were a mixed bag, some hard, some soft. Greens rolled fast and true, but there were many more unrepaired ball marks than I usually encounter out there. Fixed 3-4 on each hole. Customer service was great, with friendly shop personnel, starter and marshal. The course is a total steal at the price I received. Two thumbs up!

played on 5-21. Second time playing this course(first time about 10 years ago) and enjoyed the round. Conditions of the course were pretty good, but seems like they were aerating some fairways. Not sure if this course is a true target golf layout, but it does have some narrow fairways. Tee boxes were moved up today, so played about 500 yards less. Saw the cart girl numerous times and saw water coolers every three holes. Not sure if its worth the full green fee price, but thats OC golf for ya.

Played here Apr 2. This was my virgin round here. Overall, a good, positive experience. Service grade: A. Pro shop staff, starter, beverage cart, and grill staff were courteous and efficient. Course routing grade: B. This is a billy goat course - holes go up and down and around a canyon. The next tee box always is a loooong drive from the preceding green. Lots of blind shots. A few holes where houses are built too close to holes, but also a few holes with some spectacular views. You have to be strong off the tee to play here; if you tend to top a few off the tee, this isn't the place for you. There were some weak holes, many average ones, and maybe one or two inspiring ones. On a few holes, it felt as if I were playing pool because so many slopes come into play. Conditioning grade: A-. The conditioning was consistent and good overall. It was well maintained. Overall grade: I paid about $85 for my round thru a discount site. That's a fair weekend price. The rack rate is about $120 - I personally wouldn't pay that, although I think the GM deserves credit for putting together a staff that provided good and friendly service.

Played 3/31/11 twilight. Greens were punched early March, and still need 7-10 days of healing time to smooth out. Still somewhat bumpy and slower than usual. Fairways were 50/50. Some very nice, others are somewhat thin and still healing from 'earthquake machine' which carves long deep lines in the turf. GPS will recommend lift, clean and place on fairways which are cut. The few bunkers I was in were on the firm side, but very playable with adequate sand. Tee boxes a little thin and still recovering for aeration. Course should be in great shape by late April.

Played 3/23 at 10:00 AM with my dad, 2-for-1 course coupon ($87 rack rate). Free range balls with green fees, which is a great touch. Tee boxes had just been punched, but were level and played nicely. Fairways were good, they had lots of lines from a verticutting procedure but were still lush. Rough was nice at about 2" and lush. Bunkers were pretty firm from the recent rains, stay out of them if you can. Greens were punched two weeks ago but are healing nicely, and they rolled true and speedy. Everything breaks towards Disneyland, you just gotta believe! Saw beverage cart and marshal several times, they are on top of their customer service here. Finished the round in just over 4 hours. The course has amazing views of Orange County and beyond from several tee boxes, so the course gets points for that. Overall a great experience, if it cost a bit less I'd play here all the time. Recommended.

Played Black Gold for the first time on March 13th. I teed off at 1:19pm (first Monday after time change). Greens had just been punched and there was no mention by the pro shop as to the condition of the greens. Course is primarily a "target golf" experience meaning that you have to hit the fairways to stay out of ecologically protected areas or homes. The fairways, tee boxes, and rough were in excellent shape. Course is very scenic on the edge of Chino Hills State Park with some good elevation views of Orange County and Catalina in the distance.

Played twilight at ~12:30 PM on Sunday, 2/27/2011, on a gorgeous sunny day with light breezes. Rain on Saturday had cleared away, but several bunkers still had standing water or had not been raked. Fairways are undergoing some kind of 'renovation' procedure that resembles deep verticutting and are inconsistently firm, soft, striped, sodded, or whatever. Greens were firm and very fast.

I like this course and the people were great, but I have some minor and ongoing issues. The 'pump' water dispensers on the course are the dumbest thing ever invented and a pain in the ass to use. Ball washers are mostly non-existent or located on the white tees. A scramble tourney teed off ~1 hour ahead of us, but play was grindingly slow all day, with our round taking 4.75 hours. Talking with the lone marshall didn't seem to inspire any action. Most of the greens had few ballmarks, but a few were pretty well marked up (i.e. #15). Several tee boxes were pretty torn up, and not just on the par 3s.

On the plus side, the Prolink GPS is great. Several holes that in the past had consistently been cart-path only were now open, so the course's turf management practices are improving. Still recommended.
