This is a delayed review as Johnny just added Coto to the database. Played there 3/31. I had my hesitations about having him add it because it ensures nobody will ever catch weber for the all-time review lead! Speaking of Mr. Weber, I had the great opportunity to finally meet and play with this elusive GK'er. He was nice enough to have me out as a guest for the day. We played all 36 holes and it was a real pleasure sharing stories with one another. We started on the South course after waiting around a little for the heavy fog to lift and figuring out the best combo to play both courses in the most efficient timeframe. We went off first on South a little before 8:00 and were finished about 2.5 hours later. We went right back out on the North. There were more people out by then, but it was still only a 3.5-hour round. Since there's only one listing in the GK database, my rating kind of reflects an average between the two courses. Overall, South was in better shape than North. On all levels, I thought South looked and played nicely. Bermuda fairways still a little dappled in color coming out of dormancy, but I always had excellent lies. Greens soft and receptive, rolling at medium speeds. The turf on the North course was completely replaced last year according to Tom, so it will take another year or two to fully mature. As it is now, it plays much firmer and tighter throughout the fairways and rough. Greens also a bit firmer on the North (partly because we played it later and the wind had picked up considerably), but overall still good playability with consistent lies. Even beyond the conditions, I ended up liking the South course more. It's the newer of the two, but I thought it had a nicer overall "look" and it suited my game more playing a bit shorter and tighter. The North has more undulations throughout the fairways, bunkers and greens, so I did like the contouring on that course. There's plenty to like about both courses and the overall facilities are very nice, but neither layout will truly blow you away. Most importantly, it was fun meeting and playing with Tom and talk about someone who was able to share some local knowledge about the Coto de Caza courses... He's played the South more than 2,400 times and logged more than 2,900 the North in his 25+ years as a member! Amazing stuff.
