Course is in pretty good shape. Fairways were lush with nice padding underneath. Rough was thick and sticky. Careful to watch you ball though; it will sink to the bottom of the rough. Traps both along the fairway and around the green complexes had plenty of sand with just enough sand to get through the ball. Greens had subtle breaks. For me it was hard to read but the ball rolled relatively true; just had to hit it firm enough to stay online.

Pace of Play (POP) was fine up until hole 6 when it ground to a halt. Not the course's fault just remember it's a resort so you will get hardcore golfers mixed with novices. Service was a step beyond.

My personal thoughts were I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Course was in decent to very good shape. GPS was spot on and the laser friendly flag sticks were great for my little range finder. Recommended for their stay and play deals. There is a little bit of everything for everyone especially families with younger kids. The little water park on site looked fun.

Easily a recommended place to play when down in San Diego.

Played the Combo tees (6481/72.0/132) with GK Guru's Rudyclub, Ringworld and JohnnyGK in 4H, 45M Friday afternoon. The course was crowded, we let one 2some play through and waited on most holes. The weather was clear and breezy, fairly hot but still nice. My 1st time playing here. From a design standpoint, numerous holes that could be considered "signature holes". Tough but fair course, good mixture of par 3's, some risk/reward par 4's. Plenty of water and sand traps. No holes were super tight, but there were also few shots where I felt like I could grip it and rip it either. The Bermuda tees had very nice, consistent coverage and were good to play from. The Bermuda fairways were not super lush and green, but they played well. Not a big cushion, but not tight lies either. The mostly Bermuda rough was thick in spots and could be penal. Taller fescue grass was around many of the hazards that was lost ball thick/tall. Speaking of hazards, they are plentiful. More holes than not had a creek, marsh or lake they you had to go over or around. And some of these you could not see from the tee. The traps were good overall. Fairway bunkers more hard packed and good to play from. Sand around the greens was softer but had inconsistent depths. The well bunkered greens putted medium to medium fast speed and held irons well. They had alot of subtle break, you can see why this place has hosted numerous professional tournaments. Speed these up a bit and they would be almost unmanageable for the recreational player. Excellent customer service from all encountered. Our carts were set up & ready to go beforehand. Saw the cart gal 3-4 times. Very fun course to play, really enjoyed the experience. I can see why it makes numerous top 100 lists. Definitely recommended.

I played 36 today with a buddy on a two-for-one, with a replay. I think it was $105 each. They have two courses here that rotate between the public and members, and today the public played the Champions course. My buddy played a similar deal with his wife last week, and he said the Legends course is a much nicer course. We played the combo tees with a slope of 132 and had all we could handle. It's been a long time since I've hit so many hybrid second shots, so I didn't get many GIR.

La Costa markets itself as an upscale resort course. Condition-wise, I don't think it measures up to other course in the area that I've played recently in its price range: Monarch Beach and Maderas. Tee boxes were generally good, fairways were OK, but there were spots where it was a little worn, dirt showed, and a few places of standing water . The greens were in great shape, very fast, and rolled true. Most of the bunkers I was in--and I was in a lot of them--had nice fluffy sand that was easy to hit out of. The rough for the most part was fine, but there were some areas where it could use some attention. All in all, not bad, but for the prices charged, well, it was only OK.

I don't usually play in the morning so I don't have to deal with maintenance. But the leaf blowers are really loud, and it takes some of the luster off the tranquility. And I don't quite understand why they need to cut the grass when you have to struggle to grab a blade or two to check the wind. It seems that they'd have been better off tending to other areas of the course than mowing grass that was already short.

Service was top notch. You no longer have to park a long way away and hoof it--self park is only a few hundred yards away. After the round the cart guy drove me and my clubs out to the car, which was appreciated after two rounds. The snack cart came around regularly, as did the marshal, although he wasn't needed as it wasn't crowded and POP was fine. The Italian sausage at the turn was very good--some of the best food I've ever had out on the course. All in all, it was a good day, and with the coupon fairly priced, but I wouldn't play at the rack rate.

Really impressed by the course. It's a hike from the self parking lot to the clubhouse, so either drop off the bags or use the valet if you aren't prepared to carry them for a while. Staff was all very friendly and easy to deal with. Warm up facilities were nice. Range is on the short side, but it's long enough since the netting will catch your drives (215 yards or so?). Starter let us get out a little early. Fairways were the highlight of the course. Like hitting off a carpet or mat. Bunkers are very strategically placed and can make you question which club to hit of the tee. I was in a goof amount of them and all but one were great. Greens were also very good. Lots of ball marks on them though. I fixed about 4 per hole and there were still a lot more out there. Disappointing to see at such a great course not being treated well by the golfers.

Nothing bad to say about the course. It wasn't perfect, but no course I play ever is. I booked a discounted tee time, but I think it's worth it at full price too. Pace was under 3 hours (twosome teeing off at 3:30 on a Saturday).

Finally got to play this track a few times last month on GolfNow Hot Deal times in the late afternoon/twilight for ~$40-$50 per player, and the Champions course is WAY better than the Legends course. I didn't know they used to play a WGC PGA Match Play event here (check Google and Youtube for some videos circa 2000's). I wasn't into golf back then but I really wish I would've caught Tiger and Davis Love III & Sergio out here! This is a very beautiful, challenging track (even after a redesign)! It is a lot harder than the Legends course. I would definitely shoot for a deal on the Champions course instead of the Legends. The Legends course was closed for maintenance so the Champions course was played heavily during the last month or so, showing the normal conditions such as beat up tee boxes and greens. Fairways and rough were in good shape. The greens were still good, just a little bumpy and very firm. I struggled with speed until the back nine. Staff was awesome and I played with fellow GolfNow'ers so everybody I was paired with enjoyed the benefit of a cheap round on a $150+ course normally. I will definitely come back if I could get a similar rate. This is one of the best courses in San Diego! A local guy said they are working on cutting out some fairway areas (in front of tee boxes ala Carmel Mtn Ranch) to conserve water and I would expect this place to be in tip top condition in a few months. A true gem!

Got a great deal and found the course in real good condition, especially considering the time of year and weather we've had. Like Itslikeimsayin said about Ram's Hill, I appreciated the layout much more this second time around. So with the price, conditions and layout appreciation it was a fun day. Now I, unlike some people we all know (sixpez for one), don't really like playing solo, I've really only done it a few times in my life so it's hard to get a rhythm . . . and I enjoy interacting with people, maybe that's just me? But it was that or wait around until 2:40 (my actual time) so off I went, played through three groups and finished in under 3 hours. Customer service was really good, I didn't get any attitude at the front desk, actually everyone from the staff I encountered seemed happy to see me, glad I got a good deal and only wanted me to have a great time there, I appreciate that!

Saw the forecast last night and decided the 8:06 Sunday morning at TP North might be a sketchy proposition, so I started looking for something today. I usually don't even look at the prices for La Costa on GN, but this time I did and saw a single for $55 at 12:46!?!? So I jumped on it having never played either La Costa course before. First off parking and finding the clubhouse was pretty confusing, no signage lead me to my destination, but a helpful employee showed me the way. Check in was a breeze and the starter got me off an hour early with another single so that was pretty cool! We had the course to ourselves for about 7 holes and then caught the threesome in front of us, so it slowed down a bit then. Still finished in just under 4 1/2 hours. Tee boxes: all fairly nice and level Fairways: I don't know what that grass is out there but sometimes what looked like a good lie played like a tight lie. If you didn't make exact contact you were in trouble. Rough: mostly minimal, with a few random thick patches. All different types of grass out there. Bunkers: nice looking white-ish sand, but heavy sand that took some getting use to . . . fairly consistent until I found the green side bunker on 18 which was brown and very thin on coverage. Greens: didn't look pretty but rolled well, were pretty fast and only well struck shots stuck or spun at all, all others bounced hard. Customer service: very good, saw the snack cart multiple times Overall: for the price ($55) a decent course, for their rack rate? Forget about it! It's a decent layout with well guarded green complexes, but to me the thing that made this course challenging at all was the playing surfaces. If you don't consistently strike your chips, pitches and full shots precisely you will be very frustrated out there. IMHO: I finely got to play La Costa, but in retrospect would have probably done just as well with the $27 11:45 at Carlton Oaks I was thinking about before I found this tee time. If this course was routinely $60 I would play it a couple times a year like I do Carlton Oaks.

My wife, father and I played The Champions Course at La Costa. We did not stay at the resort just a review of the course. The course has multiple tees which greatly leads to the enjoyment of the round. There was no vegetarian option at the turn which at a pricy joint like this I would expect them to have some thing to offer to my vegetarian wife. The lack of estetic landscaping (flowers and such) were also dissapointing at such a pricy golf course.

The course it'self was well maintained with few divot marks and green grass in the fairway and rough in December. From the white tees there are many forced carries and short hitters are able to avoid most of them from the green tees. There are tons of bunkers that are all well maintained with even amounts of sand in each bunker. Either practice your sand game here or practice before and use it here but plan to be in the sand. The greens were well maintained but were slower than the practice green. The course layout had few memorable holes. Overall considering this as a big ticket course it leaves a lot to be desired to be considered worthy of the green fee. I would definitely put this behind Aviara and Maderas if I had a free golfnow code for San Diego county.
