SURVEYOR REPORT Surveyor Report: 12/16/2006
Though the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort now counts 3 18-hole layouts in its impressive portfolio, the success of the establishment can be traced back to the first course to attract golfers to the property: Snow Mountain.

Opened in 1995, this Pete Dye layout strays from the formulaic difficulty by which his courses have come to be defined. Sure, you’ll still find some of the trademark railroad tie bunkers and boulder-lined water hazards, but missing here are the diabolical, do-or-die stretches of holes that have maddened both professionals and weekend duffers alike. Don’t get me wrong; Snow Mountain is no pushover, but there are plenty of opportunities to score well that you won’t find yourself harboring any grudges toward Mr. Dye by the day’s end.

Most players (and gamblers) will enjoy the two excellent short par 4s: 7 and 13. Each provides a reasonable opportunity for a player of moderate length to contemplate driving the green, but such a strategy is not without danger as in both cases the desert lurks to collect wayward shots and send you back to your bag for another bullet.

Never one to let an opportunity for a good tough par 4 pass him by, Pete Dye has included his fair share of long and difficult ones to offset these two gems. Likewise in the par 5s, there’s a good deal of variety in length, orientation, and terrain. Sadly, this impressive trend of variety does not continue into the par 3s where aside from the distinction achieved through either the presence or absence of a water hazard, most of the lengths are similar and they do a poor job of differentiating themselves from one another. The 16th hole, though, provides your best opportunity for a photo suitable for framing. None are particularly weak holes, but I believe the course would have benefited from either an extremely short or a very long one-shotter to break the mid-iron trend.

Snow Mountain is kept in top-notch condition. From start to finish, you will not find an area of the course in disrepair. The greens are quick but not lightning, and fairly receptive (especially in comparison to the newer Wolf course). Fairways are lush and Rough areas, though not of consistent length throughout the course, are mostly healthy and playable. There were a few spots where I could see some room for improvement in both the fairways and the rough, but that kind of nitpicking makes it far too easy to overlook the bigger picture here where I must emphasize that this is a golf course that is kept in truly excellent condition.

Included in your green fee are unlimited practice balls, and you’d be wise to take advantage of their excellent range and short game facilities. Don’t bother to worry about crowds caused by having 54 holes at the resort – the Wolf course has its own practice area on the opposite side of the clubhouse, so Snow and Sun Mountain patrons are free to spread out amongst one another and warm up at a relaxed pace.

Off the course, the Las Vegas Paiute resort features a lavish clubhouse complete with panoramic views overlooking the Snow Mountain course and an attractive open-air floor plan in which the pro shop, lobby, restaurant, and bar smoothly flow into one another. Men’s and women’s locker rooms are large and comfortable, and the service is attentive and friendly.

Barely a half-hour from the strip, the Las Vegas Paiute resort feels worlds away from the congestion of the city and the mind-numbing sameness of the suburbs that infect many of the other area courses. There’s not a home to be found on any fairway here, and the only detail that betrays Paiute’s remote setting is the occasional glimpse one steals of the Stratosphere tower lurking the distance. Given the quality of the golf, the clubhouse facilities, the stunning scenery, and the “away from it all” feeling that is fairly rare around these parts, I heartily recommend the Las Vegas Paiute Resort to anyone looking for a round (or three) as part of their Vegas experience.
