I enjoy playing new courses as much as possible and will golf anywhere. I like the challenge of tough courses, meeting new people, sunsets, holding hands, long walks on the beach...

First thing is a sign at the pro shop warning of a temporary green on Hole 2. Apparently, some yahoo did some donuts on the green overnight. Luckily, the damage seemed to be superficial. It did make for a great attempt at eagle, though, as the temporary green was about 100 yards short of the real green. With the weather getting cooler, the course is starting to show some over watered areas on many fairways. Staying out of those areas were challenging as they were not roped off.
Greens were medium speed, soft, and had many ball marks new and old. Not really bumpy but the appearance was just okay. They did speed up as the day went on and putting downhill away from the dam is always going to be faster.
Fairways and rough were decent coverage, but the farther you get from the center the worse the conditions get.
Bunkers were okay, but there's a serious lack of raking going on here. Etiquette might be lost forever.
Tees were level and in okay condition. Some were overly wet, especially in the shade. We all played the White tees, so I can't really comment on the others, but I think there was little difference.
I like the course. I used to work as a greenskeeper here on weekends about 25-30 years ago. Like all LA City courses, this one could be better and cheaper to play. I think it was $52 weekend rate, plus $10 per player to reserve. Ouch! » Close I played here last Friday, December 6, with some buddies from work. Many areas were over watered, but it's a lot better than it was 10 years ago when the old owners didn't have the water. We played the Valley/Mountain nines. they were overseeded a month ago. The Desert Course is currently under overseeding and maintenance and is closed.
The greens were medium speed and mostly good. Hole #6 on the Mountain Course (a par 3) was not mowed. Maybe it's under some kind of maintenance, but it was shaggy. Soft greens throughout and there were plenty of ball marks to fix.
Fairways were good for coverage. Not as green as you might expect for being overseeded. Very few, if any, bare areas. Plenty of divots in the popular zones; think 100-150 yards to center of the greens.
Rough on this course is a different story. For the most part, there's none. It's thin, bare, and mowed tight so your ball will find its way into the scrub brush for a penalty. There are a lot of burrowing animal holes throughout the rough on this course. Ground squirrels are prevalent here and you could lose a ball or get some terrible lie. There's a premium on fairway shots at this course. Anything else and you're possibly looking at a big score.
Bunkers were a mixed bag of mostly not good. Thin sand here and there, deep and fluffy in others. Typically, it will be more sand around the greens and thin-to-little sand in the fairway bunkers.
Tees were not great. Mountain #8 was undergoing some construction and all moved forward. It did make for some fun shots to go at this green (uphill 285 yards), although it's very well protected with numerous bunkers up the right-hand side.
Overall, the course was okay condition-wise. I really want to say it's great, or even good. I just can't. Maintenance could be stepped up. Maybe increase the size of the landing areas in the fairways and grow some real rough to keep your ball in play. Maybe trim some of the large heritage oak trees that tend to interfere with your shots.
There was no beverage service, but the carts have ice chests and there is ice outside the starters office. Drinks and food are available at the snack bar, but it's not cheap. The upstairs restaurant has long been closed. It's kind of a shame as the restaurant and bar used to be good. The future of this course could be looking up if the owner can build his dream resort like he has planned, but there has been push back from the local community. I will continue to play here occasionally as it's only $55 senior rate M-F. » Close I played here on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We had the 8:40 time. Overall, course conditions are very nice. Everything was well moisturized from the previous days’ light but steady rain. Great customer service upon checking in. My buddy received a refund on the four senior players because there was no option for senior rate when booking online.
We got there early enough to have breakfast. Food is decent and reasonably priced. A better option for me would’ve been to go down to the range, but as it turned out, I never made it. I did have time to hit some putts; the practice green was good and not a lot of people using it.
On course, the overall conditions were pretty good. Great turf coverage from tee to green in all areas of the course. Greens were medium speed and did quicken up as the day progressed. Not too many ball marks to fix and they rolled true. We played the white tees on the front nine but moved back to the blue tees on the back nine. All the tees were level and not too torn up. Bunkers had good sand and appeared very well maintained. The beverage cart made several passes and kept the group hydrated.
For the senior rate of $60 riding I believe I will have to put this course on rotation. » Close I played here twice recently, last Friday, November 8, and last Monday, November 11. Course conditions are really nice at this time. Greens were running fast and smooth with just a few ball marks here and there that were easily repaired. The rest of the course has lush grass and level tees. I played the blue tees on Friday and the white tees on Monday, the mornings can get chilly out here and there is a possibility of a frost delay during the colder winter months. Friday we had the first group out at 7:30 AM. There was about a 45 minute frost delay for the first group. I was in a bunker on hole too, and the sand was frozen. It did warm up quickly and by 9 you could be wearing shorts.
Monday’s weather was a little warmer. There was no frost delay. It would have been a warmer day, but the wind came up before noon and was blowing pretty steady and kept things on the cooler side.
Greens: medium fast, smooth.
Fairways and rough: great coverage and mostly good lies.
Bunkers: Mostly good (if raked) with good sand.
Tees: Level and not beat up.
Range: Hitting off mats to a small valley with a handful of targets.
Pro shop: Friendly service and a decent selection of balls, hats, jackets , shoes, etc.
Clubhouse: Good selection of food and beverages. » Close
