I got out to Kierland with a 909 tee time. Play going on but not packed on the course. Practice balls are included in the round with the driving range under shade in some spots. We got off as a single playing the Ironwood/Mesquite combo and didn’t run into anyone until the back side. Ended up joining another twosome. Course conditions were mixed. Ironwood greens were very slow and not completely recovered. The greens on Ironwood were in bad shape. Many bare spots and patches of grass made it feel like putting on a plinko board. Lots of small ridges in the greens causing putts to go off line and lose speed. Fairways on both nines were ok with some bare spots. Overall, the course is not really worth it right now.

8/20 - We played the Mesquite/Ironwood nines. The course was in good shape. It looked like the practice greens had been punched recently, but the greens on the course rolled decently. The only thing I don't like about this course is the $90 green fee. There are so many other courses in Phoenix that can be played on for cheaper that are better. I would play the course more if that rate dropped about $20.

The round on 6/16 was my first time playing here in a number of years. I utilized the Troon Summer card for a pretty good deal considering their current rack rates. We played Mesquite/Acacia combo as Ironwood is closed for aeration.
Kierland has first class service all around. Everyone was great from the bag drop on throughout the day. The gentleman in the clubhouse was kind enough to check for a lower rate for my son.
The course was mixed conditions. Dry in some spots and very dry in others but understandable given the 115*-118* temperatures in Phoenix recently.
The fairways were good for the most part. Bunkers had plenty of sand. Tee boxes were on the thin side with lots of divot damage on par 3s.
The greens were spotty and not a lot of grass. I’m not sure if they had been punched recently but very bumpy and thin on grass. They held well struck approach shots but were difficult to putt.
Overall, not a bad place to play for the right rate given the location of the course.

Played a twilight practice round here last Tuesday. Played the Mesquite Acacia sides. Ironwood is closed. I have to agree with all of the reviews below especially Isoceles. While a beautiful course, it is very blah. It's a Troon facility so the staff and service is top notch. They did notify me the greens were aerated and basically unputtable and they were right. The greens aren't punched they are absolutely raked making putting impossible. The rest of the course is pure beyond belief. They must be watering heavily here because the fairways and tee boxes were as green and lush as a course can be. The mesquite side is boring and bland. Nothing special or unique about it, I can't remember one hole there. The Acacia side is much better but it is very resorty and does feel like you are playing in a half pipe. Lots of bunkers and beautiful holes but there is something very artificial about this course. It's one huge square ballpark surround by town homes. While there are desert elements it doesn't feel like natural course design. You feel trapped in a city when you play. The final two holes are impressive surrounding the lake and enormous resort. Although the statue in the lake is very odd and Beetlejuice esque. Maybe if you are a tourist and not a fan of desert golf this could be a nice pleasant day at a resort course. Otherwise much better to be had around.

Played 7/26 in the final round of the Oven15 tournament. It was 27 holes on the Mesquite/Ironwood/Acacia nines. I was in the last group which tee'd off at 9:10a and finished as a tensome at 4:30p. The tournament is a test of golf,patience, endurance, and your ability to hydrate properly. I had a great time at the event. The Keirland resort, bars, restaurants and clubhouse are awesome. The customer service from the staff was excellent. I really enjoyed the scotch tasting and learned a lot. The turkey sandwich I got in the clubhouse restaurant after 18, was one of the best I have ever had. The bagpiper playing at sunset was a nice touch.

With that said, the golf course, the conditions, and the golf experience I found to be much different than the other reviewers. I had high expectations since it is a Troon property, but it was a little disappointing.

Let's start on the practice range. Good sized range, nice practice putting green. OK chipping and sand area. Got there at 7:30a to practice, they have a movable canopy to cover you when you hit. The problem was you must not have moved it from the day before. All the spots to hit from were just dirt. The other problem was your practice balls. 1 out of every 3 needed to be thrown away. Balls were cracked and some were so worn that you couldn't read the writing anymore. Some were so old they had no dimples and were worn smooth.. No other Troon course I've been to has practice balls like this.

The layout of the three nines are all very similar. I'd call it golf in a half pipe. There's mounding on each side of the holes. If you can keep it inside the mounds, your ball will kick back down to the middle of the fairway. Most greens are elevated. If you miss them, you are in a low area chipping up to them. Holes play back on each other. If you go up and over the mounds, you are probably okay with a shot from another fairway.

If there was one word to describe the conditions at Kierland it would be Inconsistent. They have been watering the course heavily. All areas of high ground were dry and firm. All low areas were soggy and spongy. I understand this happening while playing in the morning, but my whole group was still getting mud balls in the middle of the fairway after 1pm. Players in my group had trouble with the sand. Some traps had plenty of sand, some were packed down hard like hardpan, and others had a thin soft layer on top but were hard underneath. The biggest disappointment were the greens. They had all been recently punched and were not in the kind of shape you would expect for a tournament.

I'm really stunned that no one mentioned these next two things that I noticed at Kierland. The first being that misting system that comes with the carts. This must be the only course that still has these around. This fad died 7-10 years ago. They just don't work. The fan can only blow the mist about 12 inches. Just enough to soak our steering wheel, scorecard, and knees. Finally, You can't be a high end golf course and not have divot mix bottles on the cart. The course is riddled with divots and you can't do anything about it. Again, I don't know of another troon property that wouldn't provide this to protect the wear and tear of the course. My rating will come in low, because of the green situation. Great resort but there are better troon courses.

I agree with Kevin on the course conditions, man can’t wait to try this course again when the greens are running nice instead of mostly aerated. Still had a blast out there. Great variety of holes. It’s a resort layout in the heart of Scottsdale so prices are high which is to be expected. It’s not a very difficult track and did not really “wow” me (with exception to hole 9 on the Acacia Course), but it certainly was a fun track. Lots of risk/reward holes. The service was fantastic and possibly the best turkey sandwich I ever had. If I could pick two nines to play I’d say definitely pick Ironwood/Acacia.

Played all three nines this past weekend. Started on the Mesquite/Ironwood combo, then finished up on the Acacia. The first 18 had been aerified a couple ago. It played nice, though. You could see the holes, but greens were soft and receptive to good shots and they rolled just fine. The greens on the Acacia nine were more recently aerified and it showed big time. A little bumpy and not as receptive ; however, it was playable. The fairways, rough, and bunkers were all in great condition with good lies everywhere, except the numerous, small natural desert areas bordering many of the holes.This is a really great facility in a nice part of town. Kind of like a mini "Disneyland" for golfers, with hotels, shops, dining and other recreational opportunities nearby. Customer service was great and the property is beautiful. The practice area has a large putting green, grass range, and chipping green. The weather was nice (for late July) with temps in the low 100's. Plenty of water and ice on course (coolers on carts), and we had many visits from the beverage cart. I may have to come back and try some of the alternative transportation, like a segway, bicycle, or golfboard.

Thursday 11th October played Mesquite 9 then Ironwood 9. Mesquite was cart paths only, the course was lush and had recently been overseeded. Little roll out on the fairways. The greens were receptive but slow - you needed to be firm with the puts - the ball runs true.
The course layout was good, no hidden dangers, the fairways were forgiving and slopes on the sides tended to kick the ball back into play.
Ironwood has not yet been overseeded, grasses were dormant and fairways thinning out a bit, lies were a little tighter and you got a lot more rollout. Greens were in good condition and a lot faster than Mesquite.
Definitely a play again course.

Played 12/6/11 10 am tee time. Played Mesquite and Ironwood 9s. Found Mesquite 9 greens to be very fast and had tough time adjusting after Troon North the day before. However, Ironweed greens had not yet fully recovered and was a bit bumpy and was medium to slow. Other than that, the overall condition was excellent.
Playing this course reminded us of playing the Westin Mission Hills in Palm Springs. Same mgmt company and similar style with many time share condos on the property. Even with great conditions, the "sameness" we felt probably does not warrant a return visit.
