I played here a few weeks back. For $35 at twilight it's a heck of a deal. I passed a group and skipped a hole passing another, then joined with a twosome to finish the round. Very nice conditions. I played from the whites because I didn't know the course, and didn't find it to be particularly difficult. From the tips it's a completely different course. Good conditions, but what's with the dormant grass in the rough? The deep rough is green as is the fairway and greens. Anyway, it just doesn't look as good with the dormant grass.

Great course. Found a good deal on the web for a single slot so headed down for the day. This course is in perfect condition. Fairways are as lush as can be, along with the tee boxes & rough. Green are mean. Cut extremely short. Firm and fast! Bunkers are everywhere, so very very deep. Awesome layout with great water holes, including an island green par 3 as well as another par 3 carrying water. Had a great time and would definately play this course again.

OK some of you guys will probably be pretty peeved at the rate I paid but this will help justify some of the comments below. Stayed at La Qunita Resort Jan 3-5 in one of the Casitas. FYI a Casita is a 1 bedroom with full kitchen suite style room. They go for around $600 during high season. We were able to get employee discount for family and with upgrade we were able to pay around $99/night. Round of golf has same employee discount for $32/round. I played both the Stadium course and Nicklaus Tournament course.

This is the Stadium Course review. Initially when paying for my tee time, there is a free shuttle service for La Qunita guests to all golf courses (PGA has five). They drop you off at the Club House. The attendants pick up your clubs and set you up in your cart so all you have to do is pay inside. This is where I feel kinda of weird. Up to that point great service but once I walk into the golf shop to pay for my round I get this gal who says sarcasticly (at least that is how I felt.) "You have a employee discount." Nothing really to what she said but how she said it, it made me feel unconfortable like I was purposely taking advantage of a family discount. Oh well. If you read my other review for playing the Nicklaus Tournament you will understand, feeling was night versus day.

Played behind Jr. Tournament. So it was slower going. Pace of play was closer to 5 hours. We barely finished with enough light. Poor guys way behind us were not as lucky. I heard in the shuttle back to the resort they only finished around 15 holes.

OK this is the skinny on the course. BUY a course booklet. It will show you the lay of the land. For folks that pay over $150 for regular green fees (undiscounted) you would expect GPS. No luck here. There is NO GPS. Did see cart gal more than a few times over course of round. Very good service there. Now course conditions are spectacular. Greens do not hold so aggressive shots to pin will find yourself off or left with a long put. Greens though are SMOOTH; almost glassy. Fairways very lush. You can tell rough (it's dormant and yellow). Easier to hit out of but still very fluffy so you can either loose your ball in the mass of yellow or it could just plain disappear from sight. Fairways are pretty lush but you get loads of roll from current conditions. Course has huge undulating fairways. Rough is more than undulating. Expect hitting your shot with the ball way above your feet or below in rough. Shots in fairway that may overshoot fairway tend to fall back into the fairway b/c of this design. Sand is everywhere as are the Railroad ties. Greens are undulating with some pretty interesting breaks. Check out photos for more idea. I will attempt to scan the course yardage book for you guys.

Overall it's really a fun course. Their customer service was pretty decent. They sell no cigarettes on the course. (oh well it is CA after all). The current golf shop is small but they are currently rennovating the club house. Staff is attentive and friendly.

Played Friday June 13th with a tee time of 8:30 am and finished about 1:45 pm, it was soooo slow. Saw marshals out there but they didn't seem to be keeping the pace of play enforced. This pace is unacceptable in this heat. I don't think the conditions of the course were all that great either. There is maintenace being done on the back nine which really makes the course look ugly right now. The greens looked ugly, I don't remember them look this bad in the summer but they were smooth and I thought a tad on the slow side. No compliants about the sand, other than that fact that I found a few. Fairways and tee boxes were fine as well. Booked the time through Golfnow.com $73 (includes fee), I'm 50/50 on whether it was worth it or not.

If you like Pete Dye, you will LOVE this course. Using Stand By Golf, green fees were just over 100 with 09:15 Tee time. We were treated well and pace of play was fine. The course guide is HIGHLY recommended for purchase as there are many hazards hidden from view off the tee.
The greens were true and fair.

The Emperor wears no clothes!! This is the season of my discontent... I have not posted favorable reviews about 3 of the other 4 pga west/la quinta courses, and this one absolutely took the cake. The customer service bordered on obnoxious, the course played like a mine field, yardage was poorly marked, greens were a mess, pace of play was a joke, we saw the cart girl 3 times - once on 9, once on 18, and only once on the course itself. Other than the practice facilities, there is nothing positive to write about this course - I was so sad, I almost cried, I remember back when this course could command a premium rate, now it fails in comparison to Silver Rock, the Norman, and even Terra Lago. Just sad, sad, sad. PGA West needs new ownership.

Played this morning @ 9:36am. Yeah, I know, we are very very stupid. It must have been 110 degrees. Anyway, the course was in very good shape, especially given the heat. The greens seem to be quite resiliant as they rolled very true. But obviously in this heat they cannot cut the greens too closely, therefore, the greens were not very fast. They were quite hard, however. On the normally shaggy, slow, soft greens of Long Beach courses, it's really easy to stop the ball on the green with pretty much any club. But there were several times today where a long iron had difficulty stopping, where it wouldn't in the conditions under which I normally play. The tee boxes were a little hairy, but again, that was probably due to the temps. I was impressed with the layout and the conditions

This course is very challenging. Tee shot placement is crucial and you have to resist the urge to go at some pins. If you miss in the wrong places on this course, you'll suffer. Buy a yardage book (it's worth the $9) and try to figure out where to miss and not miss. You can't hit driver on every hole, and you shouldn't hit 3-wood to into the par-5 greens either (note: I played from the tips; this advice might not be applicable from other sets of tees). The starter was a little annoying: he pumped us for all our indexes, and then proceeded to tell us from which tee boxes we were to play. I told him I was a 2 (which is true) and he said, "oh, well then YOU can play from the blues". I proceeded to ask him what I needed to say in order to have "permission" to play from the blacks. He said that those tee boxes weren't open. I asked, "Then what in the heck are those tee markers doing there? Shouldn't you just take those out, not cut the grass from those boxes, and put signs there saying they are closed?" After looking at me quizically for a couple of seconds, I told him politely that after paying good money to play, they should let me tee off from the parking lot if I want to, just so long as I don't hold up the group behind us. I walked back to the tips, teed it up, and drilled one. Where does he get off? Power trip much?
