Played Hunter Ranch Golf Club with GK’ers rgm2525, lotrgolf48 and Audac1ty Sunday and had a great time. We teed it up just before 7:00am and got around in just over 4 hours. Afterwards we had lunch at their Butterfly Grill which is an excellent restaurant.

The golf course was in great shape with the greens running fast and mostly firm. The fairways were lush and at times moist producing some toupee size divots. There were also some sporadic small bare spots in the fairways but almost always I would find my ball on a perfect lie. The rough was short, not much of a factor, actually helps you more than hurts you because just outside the rough is oak trees and bare ground. You have to be very careful to avoid hitting to bare areas because your ball will run once it hits them…plus they are loaded with gofer holes which your ball can easily roll into. On hole 5, I hit a shot just right of the fairway, it caught the bare slope and I never found it. As for the sand traps, I thought they were in excellent shape at times firm. The tee boxes did have some divot damage at times and a few very much need leveled, we played the back tees, but overall decent.

The layout and ambiance of the place is the biggest attraction to me. It’s a very unique course winding through hilly terrain, oak trees, a vineyard or two, with well guarded greens by bunkers, trees and water hazards. It’s a tough track to play the first few times because there are spots on holes off the tee you have to avoid that you don’t realize. The place overall is secluded and truly wraps you up in the golfing experience. I’ve always enjoyed my rounds here and will certainly play here again.

What a pleasure to play Hunter Ranch today. Teed off at 2pm and finished in 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Conditions: tee boxes (tips) were mostly level with few bare spots. The fairways were lush with many burnt spots on several fairways but for the MOST part they were very nice. Highlight of the day were the greens. Smooth, fast, and held shots... What more do you want?
Rough was grown out for "impossible open" but nothing crazy.

Truly enjoyed my day out in paso with my dad and will definitely play next time I am in the area.

I've been traveling so this review is a couple weeks late. I played this course on SAT, 8/3 with their August specials for $67/round. Customer service was spot on. I e-mailed the GM while planning my trip and he graciously extended me the July special of $67 before the August specials were posted. The lunch in the clubhouse was delicious. We were taken care of during the meal and packed to go cups for our drinks. They run a happy hour from 3 pm to 6 pm daily. Very nice winery in Eberle across the street for a pre or post round complimentary wine taste.

As for the course, the greens were running fast and firm @ 10.5/11. The fairways were soggy, but it is expected with 90 plus degree heat in Paso Robles. Rough was penal and tee boxes were in good shape. Sand traps were fluffy and we enjoyed this challenging layout (esp the hole #11 through #15 are brutal and tricky). Very tight driving holes. Extensive practice facility with a well stocked clubhouse. Look forward to coming back and would encourage a Greenskeeper.org event here. Recommended.

Haven't submitted in a while, not much to say but..Hunter Ranch was such a treat on my recent vacation I have to tell you about it. I was at the lake (Nacimento) for a week and decided to Play a round of golf early in the week so my arms would still work before Water Skiing. This place is first class all the way! CS was super from the Pro shop checking in to the waitress at the cafe. The greens people who were out on the course would actually stop and turn of what ever equipment they were using when you played through, something I wasn't use to at my local Muni's! I always play the White's when playing a new course for the first time and the tee boxes were in perfect shape. The fairways were usually pretty big and ez to hit but there is still enough challenge, elevated greens, Tee boxes, tough par three's, some tough club selections on some of the par 4's as well! Very enjoyable experience and well worth the money. Very scenic and peaceful. A couple of the bunkers had some crusty sand that my group was in but that would be the only complaint. It can get real hot so try and T off early. I got lucky with the weather as this day was overcast and cool. 9 am tee time was good. Have fun!!

We played Hunter Ranch at 8:33AM on Sunday 6/30/13, the final course on our PR golf weekend. It was very hot in the PR area (Fri/Sat temps 110 degrees!) but we got out early and finished before it got uncomfortable in <4 hours. We paid $100 – which I think is seriously overpriced for this venue in this location.

This was our first time playing here so we were not familiar w/ layout. The course is challenging, esp. the back 9, with many restrictions on sightlines and hitting lanes. The back nine had many holes where hitting areas were sloping into dry arroyos; extensive hazard markings; vegetation close to the line of play; and water in play. Many holes have driving lanes constricted or blocked by mature trees – you need to be able to shape high tee shots to place ball effectively.

Greens were smooth, held shots, and rolled well at medium-fast speed. Tees had been punched/sanded very recently; they had a poor appearance, but were level and very playable. Fairways had numerous bare/brown spots but lies were generally good. Sand was machine raked and in very good condition, with ample sand an consistent playability – very good coverage and quality throughout. There is lots of sand and in play throughout the course.

Sprinkler heads were generally marked, although many of the number plates are broken and the distance is not easily readable. No GPS or yardage book is available. The lack of GPS or yardage book is a serious negative, in my opinion.

Recommended for better players, but look for twilight rates or better deals. And bring your own yardage tools.

This course is probably the best public course in the Central Coast area. The overall condition was great. The greens are small and wicked fast. The fairways were beautiful, with a few brown spots. The rough, like Purisima is just ridiculously nasty. I saw my wife's ball land in the rough and just disappear, just not fair to an average golfer. Easy to say, but stay in the fairways. The bunkers were in great shape and the tee boxes were level for the most part. Plays long from the Blue tees and there are some holes that can be confusing if you've never played here before. Lots of doglegs and some nice elevation changes. Like Purisima, they have no GPS, so download an App.

This is a beautiful course running through wineries and the course is lined with large oak trees. It has it's own version of Augusta Nationals "Amen Corner" and these four holes truly test your game and frustration level. No cart girl here either, but you can order food from the clubhouse at the turn. Plenty of cold water stations throughout the course, as well.

If you're headed up the Central Coast book a tee time here. Hwy 46 also has several wineries up and down the road, so if you like wine you can spend a nice couple days up here.

Played 6-7 early morning as a single in 1:40. Tee boxes in good shape, some of the three pars are a little thin but still ok. Fairways a very nice and lush with ball sitting up real good. Rough is not to long about 2 inches and easy to hit from, get outside the first cut and you are in unmaintained areas which is mostly hardpan with a lot of ground squirrel holes. Found one sand trap on 10 with very nice groomed sand. Greens are very smooth and fast with a few pitch marks being the only blemishes. Pro shop staff very friendly and helpful.
Great restaurant.

Finally got to dust off the new set of irons I got for X-Mas, and what a great place to do it. This course challenges you in every aspect, and when the rough is up like today, you had better be on. The course is in incredible shape with the greens rolling fast and true, and the fairways and bunkers tip top for this time of the year. Once again 11-14 kicked my a**, but I cant wait to go back.

The guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful. I hit a small bucket on the very nice grass range. The small putting green right at the first tee was a nice way to get ready for what The sign outside the pro shop said the greens are really fast and boy was that right on.
Tee boxes were level and in nice condition.
The fairways are in good shape especially for mid dec. it had rained a little the day before so they were a little soft and not much roll.
Bunkers are good with decent sand some were a little heavy due to the rain.
The best part of this course are the greens. Fast-true and almost ball make free. They did hold high shots well.
I really enjoyed the layout and the challenge. Local knowledge would be helpful. The front nine is pretty mush straight forward but the back has some blind tee shots (11 & 12 come to mind). I almost passed up the chance to play here due to the slope rating of 130 from the white tees but really glad I didn't .
Had a very good lunch after my round. Very comfortable bar/ dinning area with reasonable prices and a wide range of choices.
I can't wait get another chance to play this track again.
