Played on Friday, 8/24 before their SAT - Impossible Open. Rough was grown out and greens were in good shape running fast between 11/12. Pace of play was 4.5 hours for 1 pm start. Fairways were dry, but in good shape. Clubhouse was rustic; lunch was delicious and good value. Great value @ their tee time specials of $59. Great sweeping views of wine country. Distinct layout that compares to no other. Rough was grown out 2 plus inches and sand traps were in great shape. I was in them 3 out of the 4 holes... Despite the heat, the course is very lush and penal if you do not hit the fairways. Go play now!

played here 6-17 first out at 6 am.golf course is in great shape. greens might be in the best shape i have ever seen them fast smooth and true.tee boxes lush with a few exceptions on the three pars. fairways real nice ball sitting up nice a few brown spots here and there but not in landing areas. sand traps are always in good shape with heavy thick sand in them. rough is about 2 inches and in good shape get outside the rough and you are usually on dirt under an oak tree. fun challenging course with great views of surrounding vineyards. pro shop is always great and helpful and restaurant has great food.

Played for the 2nd time in 3 days. Local knowledge is definitely beneficial, several holes with blind shots around doglegs or over hills. Many trees lurking just off the fairways. On many holes, hardpan also lurks not far off the fairway, and due to the slope you can roll 25 yards down a hill into trouble by barely missing the fairway. Greens were immaculate, tees/fairways rough better than average for winter. Sand is deep/thick and needs to be avoided, several almost unplayable fried egg lies from our 4some. Customer Service was a plus.

Drove up from Westlake Village to Paso Robles Friday for a day of golf and hanging out with NickEsquire1, Rich (Nick's relative) and rgm2525. It was a post card weather day with temps in the high 70’s/low 80’s. The drive took 3 hrs from for me traveling up the 101 but that drive always flies due to the beautiful scenery of the pacific ocean and then the central coast hills/wine vineyards.

This was my second time playing Hunter Ranch Golf Course. The first time was a GK Event about 4 years ago. I loved the layout and golf experience then and loved it again.

The layout is very unique with rolling hills, well positioned old oak trees, large interesting green complexes/undulating greens, good blend of open-moderate-tight tee shots, deep bunkers greenside yet few bunkers adjacent to the fairways. Most of the holes are straight forward but it will benefit you on the more difficult holes if you know how to shape your shots. This is not a grip and rip type course but extra length off the tee will serve you well on most par 5’s which give you an opportunity to hit the greens in two.

Pace of Play for our Friday afternoon teeing off around 1:30pm was right about 4 hours. Impressive considering it was a busy day for golf out there. The conditions of the course considering how cold and dry of a winter central California has had were excellent. The greens we’re very smooth, firm and medium-fast. The fairways, winterized dormant but not that thin, just yellowish to light green, with plenty of padded grass to hit your ball off. The rough was predominately present greenside but only 1 to 3 inches. The bunkers were in very good condition all containing soft well raked sand. The tee boxes were lush, mostly level and properly cared for. Some people might complain about the bare areas found under the oak trees but I feel the add character to the course and force you to be more accurate with your play. If you find yourself under an oak, as I did quite a few times, there is plenty of clearance to make a full swing for the most part. Overall I thought the course was in great shape.

Before and after my round I grabbed a bite to eat at the connecting rustic restaurant/bar/grill. Beautiful comfortable experience with excellent food, affordable pricing, excellent service and clean. Anytime I’m back playing Hunter Ranch I will for sure plan on setting extra time to either eat before or after my round.

Can’t wait to get back up here and play again. I bet this place is going to be in amazing shape come late spring (plus it would be cool to see the surrounding vineyards grown in which border many of the holes). I won’t wait 4 years again before teeing it up here.

2nd time playing HR, the 1st was in a GK tourney 3 1/2 years ago. Played in a little more than 4 hours with Johnny GK, RGM2535 and Rich from Valencia C.C. Picturesque course with many mature oak trees, elevation changes and views. Would be a challenging course to walk. Greens were immaculate, medium fast/firm, very few ball marks. Fairways were decent for the winter, generally lush with a few thin spots. Traps were in good condition, well maintained. Tees were generally good, lush, a few could use leveling. rough was lush and mowed lower than I remember the last time, good for me since I was driving crooked much of the day. Thanks much for the HR staff working our group in and for the fine customer service. Had lunch beforehand in the grill, good food and excellent service.

Took a little 2-day trip up the coast to play some more courses I hadn't played yet in the Central Coast area. My first stop was at Hunter Ranch, which is a course I've heard nothing but great things about over the years. And, as a "sister" course to La Purisima, I had high expectations.

My expectations were met. Kind of a similar layout/design as Purisima, but set in the heart of Paso Robles wine country. Lots of crusty old oak trees and rolling hills make it a beautiful setting for golf. My time was for 11:00, but I got there an hour earlier than anticipated. It was pretty slow on Friday morning, so they let me right out with another single and a twosome. They were all regulars here, so the local knowledge definitely helped. One gripe I would have is GPS or something would help here as some of the holes are pretty tricky. We finished in just over 4 hours, so it was a solid pace of play.

They were starting everyone off the back nine for some reason this day, which is a cruel trick on a first-time player. The back nine is definitely tougher, with a lot of tight fairways, forced carries and challenging "target golf" holes. The front nine is a bit more open and "pastoral," but plays longer and has plenty of tough holes, as well.

The course was in good winter shape. Mostly green, a little patchy here and there, but fairways, rough and tee boxes were all in nice shape. The greens were in good shape, very firm and VERY FAST. There's a sign at the clubhouse that says "stay below the hole" and that is good advice if you can control your approaches. Speaking of the clubhouse, it was a very cool, rustic-looking place that fits right in with the ranch/vineyard theme of the area. I really enjoyed this course and would highly recommend it.

We played here on a very hot day and perhaps our opinion of the course, takes that into consideration? We can say we thoroughly enjoyed the course but it was the back 9 that did it for us. The front, in our opinion, is acceptable but we did not really appreciate the course until we got to the back 9. Starting with # 10 and going through 17 is a great blend of golf holes. We have to say we were somewhat surprised with 18? But maybe they decided to bring you home on a little more forgiving last hole, after the roller coaster ride you just got off? Great customer service and terrific 19th hole. Pace of play was great and conditions were excellent.

Rough is punishing, greens rolled perfectly and were medium fast, Sand was great, my only complaint might be there were a few tee boxes that were not level. Cart girl was around at least 4 times as well. Back 9 very different than the front and you really need to play with someone who is familiar with the course-Lots of doglegs and places you dont need to hit driver. Excellent layout and very fun.
