Played early today, Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. We played early, about 6:30 am, and the pace was good at 4:05. Quite crowded out there but still moved along nicely. The coffee shop was closed and it did not look like they were operating. The range was open.

The course was in good shape. Green and lush fairways, some roll still. They were putting some water on it because of the heat. Seemed to excite the bugs, they were out in force, including mosquitoes. I was in one bunker and it was in good shape. The rough was a factor but cut down and we generally had no trouble finding balls. The greens rolled well, but were inconsistent. Most of them were slow side of medium.

Overall, a good experience. Good length, with some fun holes. Recommended.

RPGC has made huge strides on the landscaping, greens, golf carts, and the overall experience. Rounds are no longer 6 hours and now are 4.5 hours. Greens are smooth and average speed. The course is fun, but the only caveat is no water on any holes. More challenging than you would think with the elevation changes. Traps could be nicer. New golf carts are fantastic, and you can sync your phone to Bluetooth to play music out of the speakers up top. The GPS screen is excellent and allows for yardage to be pressed to see where you want to land it. Overall, I recommend this course.

Played today, Saturday March 21, in the morning. Numerous Covid-19 measures including tape on ground six feet apart at starter's window for social distancing, no flags on putting green, card reader outside starter window with statement that is preferred rather than cash, sign outside saying anyone feeling ill is prohibited from entering, no flag pulling statement, no rakes in the bunkers, and they put rubber tube inserts into the holes while we were playing that were about half the height of the hole so the ball sat up when it went in and was easily retrievable without touching the flag. The place was packed. I got on as a single and played with three good guys - no hand shaking and everyone appropriately distanced on the course. 4:15 pace of play which was good considering the time.

The fairways were pretty good with the recent rain. They were mowed and gave a good lie. The rough is up and we had to look several times to find balls. The bunkers had been raked by the staff. The greens were pretty good. A little inconsistent and occasional bumps but over all they rolled well and at a decent medium speed or better.

A good time in difficult circumstances. I appreciate LA City golf for its efforts.

Played Rancho Friday, 1/31, with a 1:04 tee time, joining a twosome and another single. Even when I lived in Venice, I very rarely played Rancho and so had only been on it a few times. Additionally, a conservative estimate of the last time I played before yesterday would be over 25 years. The generally positive reviews about the place recently had me curious to revisit this classic muni and I finally pulled the trigger. I was not disappointed and would say that the course is in pretty good winter conditions, much like most of the courses I've seen lately. As a previous review mentioned, many, not all, tee boxes were combining blue and whites forward to give the balance of the teeing grounds recovery time. They were reasonably level overall with decent coverage. Fairways were on the tighter side with good rollout. Some thinner areas, but mostly OK. I noticed the fairway on hole five was a bit divot heavy near the top of the hill approaching the green, but that wasn't typical. Rough varied from not-very-punitive to costing strokes — overall pretty good. I was in a couple of bunkers that were fair to play out of — not at all fluffy, but not overly firm. The greens were pretty nice and rolling quick — not as fast as the practice green out by the parking lot, which was very quick — but definitely an enjoyably challenging speed. The greens' surrounds could vary from hard and dirty, to green but lumpy, to green and good for chipping — with more of the latter two. Things were on time at the first tee, but course pace was a bit sluggish at around 4.75 hours, with a couple of holes in particular backed up. When I booked the round I hoped I would have time to finish, halfway through the round accepted that I probably wouldn't, but then managed to finish up right around 5:45pm in the last of the twilight with the help of the range lights. Someone hit into us on the 18th green, so I know we weren't the last ones in. The guys I was grouped with were all very pleasant and easy going, and nothing about the conditions put me off as unexpected or problematic for this time of year. I really enjoyed the whole experience and won't wait 25 years to do it again.

Friday twilight this past weekend at Rancho Park and for once I don't have much to add that wasn't covered in all the recent reviews. I hadn't played my 'home' course for quite some time so it was fun to get back to this LA classic to find it in good shape overall with the exception of the sanded, roped off tee boxes. A necessary evil of course ... like our golf games, it's not always easy to have every aspect of your game firing on all cylinders at the same time.

Oh, one thing to note that's pretty new I believe is that the carts have a nice GPS system in them now. Don't remember that from before. It's a nice touch but a more basic system. Still, a big upgrade.

Played on Thursday 1/16. The all tee boxes have been aierfied and heavily sanded. Few of the tees have closed off areas so the black, blue and white tees are bunched up together. As for the condition... Continue »

Played on Thursday 1/16. The all tee boxes have been aierfied and heavily sanded. Few of the tees have closed off areas so the black, blue and white tees are bunched up together. As for the condition of the rest of the course, previous 2 reviews are accurate. Fairways have good coverage with some bare spots. Same goes for the rough. The greens are very receptive and rolling at medium to quick pace. The bunkers are a little thin in my opinion, would like to see a little more sand but still payable.

While I lived in Westchester for 20+ years, I played a lot of golf at Rancho Park, and despite the brutally slow pace of play, I always enjoyed this course. Always felt that Rancho represented the barometer of what kind of golfer you were. If you shoot 75 - 85 - 95 at Rancho, you were a 75 - 85 -95 golfer. Since moving to Orange County 20+ years ago, I rarely get back to Rancho because I hate fighting the traffic. But made the drive and have to admit that it was worth it. Hard not to enjoy playing this beautiful parkland course in the middle of Los Angeles.

Course was in better condition than I expected, particularly the greens. Generally the fairways were good, with some thin/bare areas. Tee boxes mostly level and decent coverage. Didn't find any bunkers, but they appeared OK. As for pace, about what I expected, slower than I'd hoped for, but just a little over 4 hours, which I can live with.

Played here on Sunday, December 29 with a mid morning tee time. POP was around 5 hours to play 18. Was surprised we were able to get a tee time a couple of days before.

Played here on Sunday, December 29 with a mid morning tee time. POP was around 5 hours to play 18. Was surprised we were able to get a tee time a couple of days before.

Golf carts had GPS in them but it was not working today. You could only see the layout of the hole. Apparently their internet was down today, so no GPS. With that being down, we were not able to get points on our LA city golf cards.

The tee boxes had fairly good coverage. The fairways were looking pretty good after the recent rains on Christmas. The fairways were a little wet in spots. My only complaint was I later found out that the grass here is different. So I noticed I didn't get much roll on my tee shots and fairway shots. Also with it being really cold today, the balls were not going as far. Had to remember to use 1 or 2 clubs more. I can't comment about the bunkers as I didn't land in any today. Greens were in great shape today. It's always fun to play here as this course is not flat and provides you with a lot of challenges.

Played early Sunday, 11/24. Great pace of play, a little under 4 hours. Pleasant group whose 4th apparently did not get the memo.

Played early Sunday, 11/24. Great pace of play, a little under 4 hours. Pleasant group whose 4th apparently did not get the memo.

The course was nice. The rough was cut down so the ball was running off to the side more than usual. I had good lies when in the fairway, some bare lies in the rough. The course was drier than usual in the early morning so there were some drives with good run out. No complaints about the greens. Medium speed but the ball rolled well.

At $60.50 to ride, it is a good weekend spot, if you get out early.
