I'm on vacation in Carlsbad and wanted to play a different course than the one we normally play when here. Playing here was a great decision.
Marine Memorial is a no frills kind of course and something I enjoy. I paid a rate of $35 from GN and it was worth the fee. Range balls are inexpensive and low flight balls. The range has plenty of hitting spaces.
Tee boxes were all in good shape except for a couple not level. The fairways were lush but maybe too lush. Drives had almost zero roll out and caused long second shots on most of the par 4s. The rough was the same situation and very penal. The wind also seemed to be in our face on almost every hole except for a few.
The greens were in good shape and consistent. They were on the slow side but all the same. They held approach shots well and rolled true through the day. Some of the greens had different colored grass on them but the pins were not set in those locations.
The scenery on the course is beautiful with tall, mature trees and rolling hills. The course is definitely different than the courses I normally play. We got to play with a Navy corpsman for nine holes before he had to go back to work. We also played the back nine and were able hear what sounded like artillery excersises going off in the background.
The course is challenging and plays longer than the yardage but well worth giving it a try.

Fairways and greens were immaculate. Tees weren't bad. Rough was not penal at all.

You absolutely cannot beat this deal, especially during the week. Highly recommended!

played the GKer cup match against Rat-patrol Sunday 4/26/15 and thoroughly enjoyed the course and the company, Rat is a very nice guy and fun to golf with. The course is very enjoyable, old school layout with trees and some hils, doglegs, and some challenge. It's not super long, but plays into the wind on so many holes, that had long irons and 4woods into many greens. Greens were very fast and had slight undulations and some minor bumps that made them nearly impossible to figure out. I think each of us only holed out one long putt and tap ins were scarce, seemed to have a lot of 3-4 footers for second putts and we weren't giving much of them to each other in our match.
Fairways were nice, seemed to always had good lies in the fairway and they were nice and soft after the light rain from Saturday, didn't roll out too much, the bermuda there seems sticky.
Rough was penal in some places and playable in other places, they had some high "heather" type of stuff not too far off the fairway as well, making it interesting. Teeboxes were nice, had great grass, but sometimes not super level, but never had a problem finding a good spot. Bunkers were a little hardpan, maybe cuz of the rain Saturday, but they played ok.
All in all a great day, at a very neat course, I will definitely be back. $40 from Golfnow, good deal, (Rat, I still owe you the service fee)

JAY-REY! You asked for it . . . here it is! I woke up this morning and had some coffee . . . I kid, I kid! Played my GK Cup match vs divotnjay today. The wind was gusting today and made a long (for me) course play pretty darn long. The course is a typical military facility type course, long, pretty wide open, straight forward, with nothing really tricky course. There are a few elevation changes and dog legs both ways. Tree lined with fairway bunkers either side of the fairways in the approximate landing areas. Nothing fancy. Tees: Level, with grass and wide enough to gain an angle Fairways: generous, not a lot of roll out and a bit sticky . . . you needed to strike the ball precisely or the club would get twisted, a bit, in your hands Rough: thick thatched and really sticky, tough to gauge Bunkers: thin and wet Greens: hard, rolling fast to the west and quite a bit slower going east. They were bumpy (quick and bumpy, bad combo), I only made one putt over 5' all day. Getting the ball within a 3' circle from more than 10' feet was a marvelous effort. POP: almost 5 hours, no waiting, it just was a long slog Overall: for the price, $40 w/cart a good deal. A nice relaxing place to play. Long (again for me), especially with the 20 mph gusts and limited roll out in the fairways. + the combo of sticky aprons and hard greens is a tough combo, Although the green fronts are wide open, bump and run or just simply running the ball up was not an option. I hooked a hard low 4 iron around a tree going straight at the green and it just grabbed and stopped. That wasn't too long winded for you was it Jay-Rey?

First time playing this course and really enjoyed it. A simple but good mix of hole designs.
Fairways are narrow cut, tree lined and some have pretty big slopes one way or the other making some T shots intimidating.
Fairways cut nice with good cushion and decent roll. Mostly lush.
Traps firm with some soft sand on top. Fairly easy to get out of.
Greens were really good. Very receptive and ran at medium fast speed.
Mostly true, but did notice a few balls bounce around. Many small undulations that can be very tricky to read.
Numerous T boxes were tough to find a level spot, but most were good.
A fun 'Old School' course

Played on 4/17. Greens were fantastic. Rolling about 10 on the stimp and ran true. Fw's a tad bit overwatered, but otherwise very solid. Once again, the place rocks. Love it there.

Had a $40 tee time with cart via GN today for my GK Cup match with jkbrown83. Course conditions are fantastic! The fairways and greens are both very good. The fairways are lush kikuyu while the rough was a little spottier, with some bare dirt spots here and there but mostly all good. Greens are medium fast, quite smooth but not without occasional bumpiness. They are not exactly soft but they hold well-struck shots without making too big of a ball mark, if any at all. The tee boxes were good/decent...a little lumpy in spots but nothing to complain about. The only bunker I was in was great. I love this course more each time I play it. It's secluded in a beautiful canyon, surrounded by rolling hills and feels more like a country club than a military course or a $40 public on a Saturday. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Vast improvement from a couple of weeks ago. FWs are in great shape. Greens greatly improved. A tad overwatered, but that's nitpicking. A really solid course. The super is doing a very solid job. It could use some tree trimming for the health of the greens. 13 needs more sunlight, but the right side trees thwart that. All in all, great fun and I love the place.
