Course if officially closed! We played on Monday at Noon with one of the last public tee times for Spanish Bay before it closed for the remodel. We were treated to another superior day weather wise. Sunny and hot (by Monterey standards) with very little wind.

The course was finally showing signs of the impending shut down with several of the fairways being brown and hard pan. The course actually played more like a true links course. But even with the “deteriorating” conditions the track still was a joy to play.

The rerouting won’t look too different from the current layout. The main difference will be the greens. They will all be softened up to a much more manageable and “resort” level basic green complex. Front nine layout won’t see any significant layout changes. Some waste land areas, aka Poppy Hills style are allegedly being added to conserve water. The back nine will see one significant change. The iconic and diabolical short par 3 hole 13 is being completely removed. Not sure why as that is such a great hole. Hole 14 is being changed from a par 5 into a long Par 4 and a new Par 3 will be added utilizing a new tee box from the left side down onto the existing hole 14 green. Course will be a par 71 layout with only three Par 5’s.

As someone who has played Spanish Bay as much or more than anyone else, I will miss the current layout. I have had so many great memories and GK Cup battles here. So many birdies over the years, yet never made a birdie on #4. Had a chance yesterday but it was not to be. My least favorite hole was #7. Only a couple of pars on that hole total but managed to roll in the long putt of the day from over 50’ out to save par and have one last great memory on an otherwise forgettable hole.

No birdies on the day from anyone in our group, but plenty of smiles all around. The sun has set on one of my favorite “go to” courses for now, but I will surely resume my quest to conquer this scenic course when it re-opens in 2027.

If you think Eagle Vines is a great course, wait until you play this one. One next door to each other. A great way to spend a day playing 36 holes.

For those of you who suffer from no tee times come to N CA. The courses are wide open and available. I am shocked that these courses are so uncrowded unlike S CA.

Once upon a time this course was a 36 hole complex. It is now an 18 hole only. And its claim to fame IMO is their par 3's. Six of them. And guess what 6 par 5's. All 6 par 3's stand out but only IMO does 1 par 5 really stand alone.

Tee boxes were all clean, level and playable.

Fairways are wide, generous, good lies and fantastic roll out. And stay in them you don't want to be in the rough. I even found myself in trouble on a few Par 5's thinking that I could not reach the hazard and would be safely hitting 2 and then 3 into the green. But the rollout was more than I expected. Something to remember the next time I play here.

Rough was wicked. Hit into it and you will spend a lot of time looking for your ball. In fact I never found two that went in and I was certain were they went in. No luck.

Add in the many OB areas, like vineyards, water, creeks, culverts in front of greens + the rough and you have a disaster of a round by the time you end. Oh yeah many trees on all the par 3's.

Traps were the one negative on this course. They were all hard and crusty and obviously need work.

Every Par 3 is either below the tee box, circled by a vineyard or has water in play. #8 their signature hole has an 85 yard green that goes left to right and has numerous undulations. It is also several hundred yards below the tee box. And if you miss the green, good luck the rough is DEEP. Oh and yes there of course bunkers.

But before # 8 there is #7 a 582 yard Par 5 from the tips and has a green that is about 50 to 60 yards above the end of the fairway, which is almost impossble to see and the green is 75 yards long from front to back.

I totally enjoyed the course. Many of the holes seem easy to navigate but the first time player will be shocked to see what is around the next corner. Its a fun couse to play and I highly recommend it if you are in the Napa area.

Yes Silverado is right around the corner. But I guarantee you you will enjoy these two courses equally if not better and your wallet will thank you.

Great customer service from the pro shop. Excellent Yamaha carts but no GPS so bring your own. No cart service that I saw today. Bring plenty of water.

Beautiful unseasonably warm day yesterday at The Oaks. Had a blast with John, Ron and Daniel as part of the Golfmoose event on Monday 3/16/26! A little over 110 players and a very successful event.

Starting with conditions

The greens were very firm and rolling fast. Pure rolls. You did not want to be short sided with the speed of these greens. You needed to really compress irons and land chips sometimes in the rough to stop balls close to front pins. With the speed of these greens yesterday you needed to have the perfect touch on medium to lag putts. Rated 8/10

Fairways had a tighter/drier base but contained nice lies and were cut substantially shorter than the long/heavy rough.

Rough was about as stunning visually as you will see. Very green and in some spots very thick 6-8 inches and in others just lining the fairways 3-5 inches. Rated 9/10

Tees were in great shape cut tight and very lush. Rated 9/10

Was not in any greenside bunkers but was in 3 fairway bunkers that were all in great shape. Raked with packed compact sand. Rated 8/10. This course has some very strategic bunkers sometimes right in tbe middle of fairways or in places where you can pound driver to try and cut the corners.

I would reccomend a round here.

New carts, or newish used from a cc from New Mexico. At least mine didn't break down but was remarkably slow but we made it.

I think they got new management because they are trying to fill out the fairways and the rough was brutal on some holes. Even some of the fairways are pretty rough.

Sand is still pretty terrible and the greens were good but a little slower than usual.

pop was ok but I'll tell you, it was crowded!!! I play at 730/8 and its never this busy.

PSA- Don't be that guy. The guys in front of had their music blaring. ( I'm not against music) but seriously! They were blaring EDM like we're all supposed to be doing whippits and X. It was ridiculous. Like you can't make it up.
