Catching up on great Monday last week at Mulholland Hills Country Club…formally Braemar CC but hardly resembles it now.

It was a smaller outing than we’re accustomed, only 82 players this time, but the experience lived up the hype surrounding Lanny Watkins, $3,000,000+ course renovations.

We again played the Canyon/Vista combo as this is their best combo of the three nine despite a wild cart ride through the Tarzana hills. Between the Canyon/Vista nines, having played them twice now, there is not one let down hole with all being very interesting and fun. For me, as a member of Braemar CC in the early 90’s, it’s remarkable how much the golfing experience has changed2 2 /improved over the years.

Conditions this time around were great but not as good as the last time since during our previous visit the Vista course had just opened only a few days prior so you can imagine how pure that was.

I loved the clubhouse, practice area and staff. Service is A+ and the views from the clubhouse of the Vista course are outstanding. Although detached from the clubhouse, Mulholland Hills CC practice area has two large shuttles taking players back and forth from the event staging area giving everyone a chance to warm up. They have a nice size range, practice putting, practicing bunkers and chipping.

We’ve already had two events here in 2026 and I’m considering a third.

I highly recommend Mulholland Hills CC to any golfers looking for membership or an outing to book in North LA/Ventura County.

Played sun 4/26, 8:30, 4:45 hr round, misty cold day, threatening to rain but never did. Course in good shape. Greens running a 10, bumpy... too many unfixed ball marks. tee to green is decent. above avg muni golf shape. Bunkers spotty. Course is notoriously challenging if you are not straight. Lots of trees. A few holes I don't like the setup. Keep the ball below the hole, as many of the greens are steep back to front. Range is under 220, so no driver for me. Had a good time.

Played on Saturday, April 25, in a fundraiser for the Riviera Village Sportsmens Club. Scramble format with a 10:00 am shotgun start. About 20 some odd years ago, two co-workers and I would play this course on Friday mornings before work. So I was interested to see how it had changed.

The course is pretty much the same except the greens are better. They were really very nice, running at a fast speed and rolling nicely. The course is a par three layout with holes running from 80 to 180 yards. Easy walking course which is good because it has been years since I started drinking beer at 10:30 in the morning. They are playing the first tee from the longer, upper, tee. I thought back in the day that they were not using that tee in order to limit possible shots going into the hotel's patio. It would take a really, really bad shot to do that though so apparently they have adjusted. The worst part of the course was the tee boxes which are really in need of grass. There was a mat on each tee but we were playing from the markers and those areas were lousy. Otherwise no complaints, the course is lush and obviously well maintained. I note that they took out the parking lot next to the clubhouse to install three pickle ball courts. We had to park at the adjoining hotel although the course validated parking. Word is the parking lot may be coming back sometime in the future. Considering we had to walk through a conference's registration (before the round) and lunch (after the round) area for ingress and egress, changing the parking layout seems a good idea.

Played last Friday morning teeing off at 6:10 am finishing in 3:50. As many have mentioned playing fast on this course requires teeing off early. The greens were in very good condition. They rolled smooth with medium/fast speed and held shots. Greens are being aerated on Monday, April 27. The fairways have mostly good coverage with some thin spots. Played last Friday morning teeing off at 6:10 am finishing in 3:50. As many have mentioned playing fast on this course requires teeing off early. The greens were in very good condition. They rolled smooth with medium/fast speed and held shots. Greens are being aerated on Monday, April 27. The fairways have mostly good coverage with some thin spots. The rough has mostly good coverage with some thin/bare spots. The bunkers were in good playable condition. The tee boxes had decent coverage with some mildly unlevel areas. Los Lagos has an enjoyable layout with some rolling terrain and water coming into play on several holes. The staff was friendly.

Los Amigos golf course tee time site today shows this message, "STARTING MONDAY, APRIL 27th, LA COUNTY SANITATION REHABILITATION PROJECT BEGINS. LIMITED PLAY MON - FRI "PLAY SAME 9 TWICE." SATURDAY/SUNDAY - REGULATION 18 HOLES." I could not find any information as to how long the project will take to complete or when the course will resume normal operation.

The greens showed very little signs of aeration a few weeks ago. The greens rolled reasonably smooth with medium speed and held shots. The fairways have mostly decent coverage with some thin/dry areas but playable. The rough is in much the same condition as the fairways and was long enough to affect shots but not to penal. The bunkers were in decent playable condition. The tee boxes were thin especially on the par 3s. Fun course on the shorter side with challenging greens. The staff was friendly.
