If Louie O. went for the green in two, and messed up (hit the water), worst case, he would still be in second place (shared). By laying up, most likely a solo second. Take out the 5 wood!! Tin Cup any one ? Did he make the right decision for the $$$$$$$?

He made the right choice. Had more chance holing out for his third than getting that ball over the water with that lie. Also, a shared 2nd place would have cost him 400K.

Going for the green would have been idiotic

His bed was made at that point. In the pond from there was no-no.

The anything but left mistake off the 17th tee was where he met his waterloo.

He sank many pressure knee knockers on the back 9 before that.

Agree with all the above.

Let van de Velde and Phil's club selections on the 72nd hole of majors continue to be the talked about "what not to do" for the next few decades. No need to add your name to that list by making a 7 (or more) after losing focus when a poor 2nd shot out of the rough doesn't come close to making it over the pond.

The goal has always been long and straight! But since I can no longer hit them long, hopefully straighter could be achieved more than occasionally?

yupp, Louis should've definitely hit the 17th fairway, possibly with a 3-wood as he was a little sporadic with the driver all day. Just put something in the fairway and on the green in regulation and grab your par and birdie 18 and force a playoff. Oh well, he went for the gusto, can't blame him. seems like a nice guy to me. Happy for Rahm, nonetheless.

No way he would have tried out of that lie for the green....boy must have been tough of the guy, worked hard all week and only made a million three, playing a game most of us would have paid $2,000 to play 4 rounds on that course (locals would be paying less then $400).

Was he contemplating of going for it? He had a long iron out, then switched it at the end. This tells me the lie was not so “obviously bad”.

Unless the pro has got more money than he knows what do with and fame/legacy is his biggest priority, then go for it. Otherwise predominate mindset is making money. Would have been unprofessional to go for it with the odds against making birdie as such. Too much money to risk IMO.

Yesterday at Torrey we were complimenting shots from the rough that carried 20 yards into the fairway and applauding shots around the green that only needed to carry a few feet. If the player got on the green in one from the rough around the green and kept the ball on the green, anywhere, it was cause for a standing O!
