Been playing the 'new to me' W/S FGv4's for approx 25 games and +30 range sessions. Inconsistency is still my issue, worse with these than my FX-101's. My most common miss is short and straight(10-20 yards). My next common miss is short and right( 5-15 yards). No shanks, mostly low/high center misses and center toe misses(foot spray and ball flight says so). I've had to really slow my swing to find any consistency. I like the FGv4's but I love the FX101's. My handicap and average rose at least 4 points with these clubs over six months. :-(

Time to get back to tweaking on these this summer. I think I can quickly 'ballpark fit' these irons, to convince me to further commit to them; instead of walking away. I've known from day one, that they are much lighter overall. The swing weight is also lighter by 2 points(GlfGalaxy leaves their SW scale on the counter just for me), not that I can tell the difference of 2 SW points.

My plan is to add heft; length wise on the shaft until the SW & static weight is equal to my fx101's...to begin testing. I chose to compare the 7iron FX101 to the 8iron FGv4(same loft and length). Here are the simple, before and after blueprints:

Before:
FX101 7i: static 458 g, 36.25", D4, CoG=27.5" from tip of handle with grip on.

FGv4 8i: static 433 g, 36.25", D2, CoG=28" from tip of handle with grip on.

After:
FGv4 added 22.5" lead tape to entire length of shaft; result is the static weight is 454g, CoG=27.5", therefore the SW is likely now D4. :-)

Time to go to the range; hoping for a breakthrough or least the next epiphany moment...

Hmm, all I can tell you is that Bryson Deshambeau (did I get that right?) would love to talk to you about this...

Hmmm...

QUOTED  Bryson Deshambeau (did I get that right?) Almost DeChambeau.

NYT reports;
Bryson gained 40 pounds and is now routinely hitting drives 50 yards past the competition. “I have to chase down the most scientifically efficient way to get the golf ball in the hole.”

QUOTED  added 22.5" lead tape to entire length of shaft;

Never heard of that being done. A gentlemen who joined us in Vegas many years back (Sahara CC) had lead tape on the back of his irons and played very well. The face of the irons had a small wear spots the size of a dime right in the middle of the club.

Finding that area on your sticks more often maybe a factor in your dispersion grid. (accuracy/distance/consistency)

Interesting review on the irons on GolfWrx - http://www.golfwrx.com/296881/review-wilson-fg-tour-v4-irons/

The comments were also interesting. Those that have the irons like them and disagreed with the negatives in the review. No reference to inconsistencies, so you are probably right that you need to make them fit your swing.

Yup, that 8i with 22.5" of LTape, now feels pretty good. Hefty, but smooth and always there letting me know where we are at in this little dance(swing).
My next maneuver is to remove 10 inches of tape, starting at the hosel end and up the shaft. Effectively, this setup will split the difference by testing with 12.5 inches of LTape. It may also be on the way to mimic'ing back weighting...sort of...not really(maybe that is my next test after this one). ;-)

Update: tweaking on clubs this summer...practice and play to date:

Driver: raised static weight to 345g from 331g, with combo of 6g Lead Tape on hosel and 8g lead tape equally on toe and heel. Felt pretty good, but, the sweet hits would only go about 80% of the distance before tweaks. The 'ting' sound is not heard anymore on pure or off- center hits.  No real improvement! Removed 4g on toe and heel, still felt good and able to now find fairways more often. 'Ting' sound is now almost back, along with more distance. Jury is still out whether this will actually improve dispersion.

7i FGv4: put 8g on hosel only...now feels more natural, goes straight, but need much more practice for my impression.

8i FGv4: removed 10" LT from hosel and grip ends, to end up with 12.5" of lead tape on shaft. Feels even better than 22.5" of LT...need much more practice for my impression.

9i FGv4: added 5g of hot glued wheel weight to sweet spot in cavity back...feels good, but need much more practice for my impression.

GW FGv4: added 10g of hot glued wheel weight to sweet spot in cavity back...feels even better than 9i with tempo and flight, but need much more practice for best impession.

SW and LW: added 10g Lead Tape head weight, to back side of each club head. This brought static weights to 483g & 485g respectively. These were the most impressive improvements to any club in the bag...tempo, contact, flight, and distance results; from thin or rougher lies, were just better!!

So far, loving the process and the possible future baseline references( both at the range and on the course).
Cheers,

Chuck

Update: tweaking on clubs this summer...practice and play to date:

With better CoG to butt shaft measurements, a SW spreadsheet, and feedback at both the range and course outings; I'm preferring more like a MOI matched set. Turns out the FX101s are simply hefty and a heft spacing only matched set(not SW or MOI matched). The FGv4s appear to be closer to an MOI matched set with ascending SW from 4i to GapW(D2->D4).
Trying to make the FGv4's all end up at D4 was getting weird. Also adding anywhere from 20-25 grams of heft to the FGv4's was just too much. I ended up removing all previous head weight tweaks and shaft weight tweaks. I ended up with carefully placed shaft weight tweaks, that added an average heft of 8-9g per club, and raised the SW of each club by one point. The new ascending SW from 4i to GapW(D3->D5).
This feels good all around. Yesterday at Yucaipa, I shot 8 strokes below my handicap, and 10 strokes below my average!

The tinkering is all worth it so far.

I'm looking for a forge and some old Gene Sarazen drawings for you FirstFlight so you can really get to work on the wedges!

Keep up the tinkering and the good play.
