Friend got a deal for $35 with cart so we made the drive down to Hollister to see what the fuss was about and I have to say I was rather unimpressed considering the amount of buzz surrounding this course right now. Don't get me wrong it's nice, but it's not a must play, and certainly not one of the top public venues in the state. I found that the slope and course rating suggest a much tougher course than San Juan Oaks actually plays. Not near as much trouble out there as the ratings suggest.

Overall the tee boxes are in great shape as well as the fairways and rough. The bunkers were inconsistent, some were perfect, others had barely any sand in them. The greens roll true for the most part, but there were several greens that were bumpy. The wind in the afternoon blows very hard. I would recommend playing this course early.

In conclusion, it's a nice course, but not that nice. Worth playing if you are in the area, but if you have to drive over a half hour to get there chances are you will drive past a comparable or better course along the way.

Played on 5/20/09. Teed off at 10:30 by my self due to some mix up in the schedule. The course was in excellent condition. The only slight blemish was the the greens where still not completly healed up from aeriating. Lots of sand still on the greens. Even so the rolled very true and where faster than I expected. The course plays to almost 6,800 yds from the blues. I particularly enjoyed number two A par 5 which requires a 200 yd. carry over water. Every hole has a distinct character and requires some thought and attention if you are to score well. The back nine meanders up into the hills and provides some beautiful vistas of the valley. This can be very distracting as some of the fairways are very narrow and the wind usually comes up in the afternoon. The course also has two very good finishing holes, both par 4s. the tee box on 17 is about 80 - 100 feet above the fairway which has a slight right to left dogleg and is ptretty narrow. 18 is also elevated to a more generous fairway but if you do't have a good drive here (long) it will take a long iron to get to the green which is also requires a carry over creek/waste area. this is a wonderful course designed by Freddy Couples, if this is any indication of his work I will be looking for more of his couirses.

Played san juan oaks on 1-28-09 for internet special of 52 dollars..course conditions magnificent...well worth the price. Met a manager and a starter who were equally rude however...their attitudes detracted from our day slightly. The only thing that saved the day was the course itself. Still worth the price and trip even with rude personnel. Gentlemen please imrove your attitude, you are working at a golf course for God's sake.

Played here yesterday and man, I forgot how nice this place is. I played here 10 years ago, and it's like time stood still. This place, and the area around this place, is unchanged. I LOVE IT. No Starbucks, no strip malls around here, just a gorgeous golf course and solitude all around. The condition of the course is superb. Tee, fairways, bunkers and greens are all good. Greens are coming back from aeration but they rolled good. It's a real treat to play here. A bit of a drive from my place in Los Altos, but worth every penny. I really enjoyed our time here. Don't know when I"ll return, but don't pass this place up if you're on your way to the famed Monterey Peninsula.
