Old Mac often gets tepid reviews when compared to the other courses at Bandon. It certainly does not have as many ocean views as SR, Bandon, or Pac Dunes. But aside from that metric, it checks all the other boxes. Most importantly, it’s a fun golf course. The greens are huge and have wonderful shapes, mounds and contours—but nothing unfair. All of the courses are in very good shape, but I thought Old Mac’s greens were the best of the bunch. Loved this course.

Played here 8/27 as a part of a 3 course tour of the greater Portland area with GK member Kassper7 on a cool and slightly windy Oregon day, with a 8:21am tee time. This has become my de facto "home course" and coming back a 4th time reminds me again why I love this course so much. Conditions here are always a notch above anywhere else I have played and the course plays so fair. Glad to have the chance to introduce a friend to it!

Tees: Played the #6 tees and no major issues found.

Fairways: Great shape considering the recent heatwave. They are visually pleasing and always seem to offer good landing areas and decent roll.

Rough: Varies in how penal but overall, good shape. The stuff that is not your typical grass and more native grass really eats up your ball.

Sand: Good shape. Not the white fluffy stuff you see on tour, but good enough to hit out of and not skull your ball.

Greens: Great shape. They ran quicker than you would be led to believe, but they aren't overly punishing.

ETC: Staff here is always good. Marshals are always around to ensure POP, which today was just a tick over 4 hours. A great walking course for those that enjoy it! Normal weekend price is a bit much, but they offer a discount card for a good price where you are discounted a good amount of normal tee times. Highly recommend!

Played here 8/25 as a part of a 3 course tour of the greater Portland area with GK member Kassper7 on a warm and humid Oregon day, with a 1pm tee time. First time playing here after hearing good things (pre-LIV) and some recommendations from locals. I must say even with somewhat tempered expectations, this place somehow fell short. It may have been their lack of attention to detail, the fact they didn't seem too focused on the customer, or the fact it didn't have the wow factor expected with professional players choosing to stop here this year, but I felt there are far better options in Norther OR.

Tees: Good shape (whites played today). Odds are the blues weren't in better shape since most males chose to play here, but nothing terrible about the whites.

Fairways: Good to great shape. No bad lies. Visually they are browning in many places, but roll and turf was still good.

Rough: Penal in many areas. Wayward shots are indeed punished in many areas.

Sand: Good shape. Sand here is more brown dirt-like sand, but there was enough in the bunkers for shot-shaping requirements.

Greens: Highlight of the round; felt they were in great shape, with speeds and breaks that were quite tricky at times. Also noticed the size of the green complexes varied from Pebble-like small (#10) to Aviara-type large.

ETC: As mentioned, the staff was very uninterested, with the younger staff seeming either too busy to help or too indifferent to care. Property is quite isolated. Plenty of parking. Nice clubhouse for the public. Range was rather uninspired. Course layout, while fun, left something to be desired. Pace was a great 4.25 hours with very little waiting. Recommend at a good price.

I played Old Macdonald on Tuesday, August 8, 2022.

Old Mac is another amazing course at Bandon Dunes. Based on the “template” holes there are some exceeding difficult shots that reward precision and blind faith. You play out to the ocean near and old dead tree called the ghost tree and you can see that tree from a lot of the holes on old Mac because that is one of the few trees on the windswept course. There are pot bunkers and very large sand dunes ready to eat any wayward drive or iron shot. Caddie was really valuable here due to the numerous blind shots and angles of approach not to mention that this is one of the hilliest courses at Bandon.

Heard of people skipping Old Mac when they go to Bandon and I would say if you skip Old Mac you are missing out on an amazing test of golf, amazing views and holes types that you don’t see anymore. 100% recommend.

I was lucky enough to play Bandon Dunes on Tuesday, August, 9, 2022 and again in Thursday, August 11,2022.

The first day the sun was shining and the course opened up to the ocean beautifully on hole 4. On Thursday the fog was so thick you could not see the flag let alone the ocean. This is the amazing variety of conditions you find even in the summer in Bandon Dunes.

Course hosted the junior Am championship a few weeks ago and was still in immaculate shape. Greens were very firm basically impossible to make a pitch mark. I took a caddie since I was playing 36 that day. They have green reading books and yardage books for sale at the pro shop. I don’t think you need a caddie if you are only playing 18 that day, buying the green reading books or were not that concerned about the score (this whole place seems more than just about the birdies and bogies).

The course has amazing Pacific Ocean views and great challenging golf holes. My favorite hole is a driveable par 4 that sits on the side of a cliff over one hundred feet from the shore below.

I stayed at the Chrome lake cottage I would recommend this for anyone that wants a bath (all/most of the other rooms do not have a bath). Also on-site the steak house has been renamed into the forge. Steak and baked potato after the round was great.

Bandon is kinda like golf Mecca everyone has to make a pilgrimage there it was a great a special treat for me to be able to go and experience all it has to offer.

Played here Father's Day 2022 on a 10AM tee time. Rates here during summer are pretty high as opposed to when I played here in February, but worth every penny. This course drains INCREDIBLY well and even the rains the day before not only didn't affect the conditions, but the course wasn't even CPO! This will be my home course for sure.

Tee boxes: Good to great shape. No problems that I recall. Lots of sets of tees to play from which is nice.

Fairways: Excellent shape. As mentioned before, this course drains perfectly; not a muddy lie to be found (except #10 which is the "draining" hole for the course). Very good lies all day and even decent roll.

Rough: Penal in lots of areas. The tall fescue grass will eat your golf ball just as quickly as you hit it in there.

Sand: Wasn't in the sand at all, but playing partners said the sand was good.

Greens: Excellent shape! They rolled true and quick. Held shots well and the staff here takes great care of them.

ETC: Staff was friendly and helpful. Marshals out all day ensuring a 4.5 hour pace. Ample parking lot and everything you could need at the pro shop. Grounds are very well taken care of. Pace was great for Fathers Day. Recommended course.

6/8 using teeoff deal time $40 plus 16 for cart really nice day high 60s light breeze no rain. The course is green and lush so much so that it was CPO but still played in just under 4hr with extra time spent trying to find some wayward shots. Paired with Kieth from WA and Rudy from Munich. Good company for an enjoyable round.
Couirse is scenic with some ocean peaks and tree line fairways. Good variety in ther layout with some elevation changes and sloped fairways so had the occassional uneven stance.
Fairways were lush with the occassional thin or damp areas but good lies all day. Fairways looked pretty open from the tee but with some doglegs and slope they were often missed by our group and found the rough which was about 2 inches deep and could hide the ball very well and then was stcky making recovery a challenge.
Tees were lush and level. I never was in a bunker but they looked well maintained with a nicely compacted fine sand.
Greens are very healthy rolling smoothly medium fast speeds. Topography factored into the breaks as a lot of flat putts were not.
Very enjoyable course with friendly staff, DR with mats and a large puttjng green that replicated on course speeds.

6/3 using teeoff deal time $48 plus 17 to ride which was a good choice as it is hilly and often a distance between greens and tees. Seemed like most holes on the front 9 played up hill to elevated greens while the back was more level but still mostly elevated greens so without nice high approaches in my arsenal I was often short with challenging chips. Fairways were lush with good lies but limited roll. Rough was long enough to impede roll and at times a little sticky.
Tees were ok with par 3s pretty chewed up. Bunkers are in need of work especially on the front being haed backed dirt with a little sand mixed in.
Greens had good cover and rolled fairly well with slight bumpiness at times. Most greens had levels and often significant slope so anywhere above the hole was mostly another stroke orntwo if the ball missed the hole.
Layout is interesting and varied with a few dog legs and often trouble on one side. Plenty od risk reward chjoices hitting over trees to cut corners. Woiuld be helpful to play a few times as there were some blind shots and more info could help course management.

grass driving range a little beat up. Large putting green also allowed chipping. Carts are old and rather beat up with no gps. Cart paths are rugged and very bumpy.
All in all a fun round. POP about 430 following 3 4 somes 2 1/2 on the front and 2 on the back.

Played 5/22 on a beautiful Spring (finally) day. The fairways had not been mowed in at least a week. The rough was cut recently though grass trimmings were not bagged. Rough was still very thick so it made it very difficult to find balls in the rough. Many bunkers had weeds growing in them. Greens were ok. This is a muni course that is showing neglect and mismanagement. Sure, the course is still a bit soft but so are all courses in the area. It's unclear if this is out of incompetence or $/personnel issues. I can say it's far below the level of Portland muni courses. Plus, making tee times requires prepayment of greens fees at booking whether it's by phone or via their web site. It appears that GolfNow handles all their bookings and you have to pay a booking view on the web site. No other course in the area (to my knowledge) require prepayment of greens fees.

I have such great memories of this course from the first few years it was open. It's a challenging, hilly layout. Some of the toughness has been softened a bit over the years, but the conditions have really fallen off dramatically. I've played out here less and less over the years, but after seeing the state of the course this weekend, I will not make an effort to play here at all.

Played 5-15-22 first out early morning walking for $79, joined by a twosome in a cart and finishing in about 3 1/2 hours with no one behind us. Tee boxes were just okay, mostly level with a couple of three pars being uneven and having some divot damage. Fairways were mostly okay with some brown and thin areas. Rough wasn't much longer than fairways and in about the same shape. Was in one greenside bunker that had a good layer of heavy red sand. Greens were rolling on the slow side with an occasional bump, and playing semi firm. Overall just decent conditions on a decent course with some real nice scenery.

Played my second round as an OR resident at the local muni with a 12:22pm tee time on an otherworldly 70 degree day, unfortunately with a constant 15 MPH wind with gust nearly double that. The course is pretty bare bones, but like Nick's review from even a few years ago, it's in great shape for a municipal and offers all you need, which is good golf.

Tees: Good shape overall. Most everyone I saw played blues here as the course is not very long, but no matter as the tee box itself is the same for both blue/white, just spaced out some. Handful of boxes were unlevel, but nothing to go on a rant about.

Fairways: Good to great shape. Considering it's, you know Oregon, they drained relatively well from rain early in the week and are kept up in great shape. Visually stunning as the grass really pops and offers good lies.

Rough: Penal under the trees. You do NOT want to miss in the areas here closest to the water and natural landscape, as the ball just disappears.

Sand: Was in one bunker and it was fine, but the sand was unlike anything I have ever seen, probably volcanic dirt more than sand, but it did the trick as it was soft and the consistency was ideal for shot shaping.

Greens: Highlight of the round; they were beautiful and quick! On downhill putts the ball was running like it was on glass. People seem to do a good job fixing divots and the playing surface was ideal.

ETC: As mentioned, course is a muni and you can tell in most every regard outside of the actual golf. Clubhouse was well stocked and staff was friendly, but they have a hard time balancing overloading the tee sheet and making sure people go off on time. Rolling up to the 1st tee and seeing 3 groups waiting was a precursor for what was to come; waiting on every shot until the turn, a 5 hour pace, and lots of people yelling at groups in front of them. Overall, if you come out during a slower time and care only about the golf, this would be your place.

Played here Wed 3/24, after my round at the Dunes. 13 hole par 3. Amazing layout. fun. They'll allow however many you want to play with... 8somes... whatever. As a 2 some, we played through 2 6 somes, and everyone smiling while we did it. 80 min to play. Pretty hilly... holes range from 60 yds to 140 uphill... Greens about a 10 and smooth. Great views of the Pac ocean and Bandon dunes back 9. I'll use this space to promote Shorty's.. a free 9holer at the practice center open thur-Sun... didn't get there. And the punchbowl: a 36 hole putting course... wacky and fun.. .and they serve drinks.
