Great day out at Knollwood at the end of next week and happened to land in a perfect spot between groups that we never did any proper waiting on a single hole all day. If you've played some near six-h... Continue »

I would not pay too much attention to cdognight’s tip (no offense) — pretty sure if he has played the course a few more times he would also recognize that a birdie on #1 is a rare sight. Golfguru’s tip is pretty spot on with my experience. A par here is gaining at least a stroke on the field and a bogey is solid. The hard part (after hitting a 250-yard drive in the center of the fairway) is the uphill and blind second shot of 180-190 yards. Any shot that ends up in birdie-able distance is pure luck for even a 5-handicapper. Avoiding the right side of the fairway and approach is key to this hole.

I have to disagree with all the other tips.
The smartest play is to layup to the 150 marker but don't go past it. You'll have a flat lie and will have an approach with the green lower than you with a sloped back-to-front (and usually soft) green that will hold shots very well.
90% of the drives I see people hit on this hole end up on the right side of the fairway/rough where it is mostly hard pan and bare dirt. Hitting a great drive to the left doesn't guarantee a good lie. Any kind of bounce can happen down there.
