Played here Tuesday with a 12:17 "Deal" time from TeeOff.com. The whole facility was extremely busy. The starter told me all three courses are closed the next 3 days for some sort of amateur tour event, and lots of people were there today for a pre-tournament practice round. I was paired with three people visiting from New Jersey. Pace was a bit slow but not terrible. We finished right as the sun was dipping behind Mt. Charleston, a little before 5:00 for a total POP around 4:40. Windy day that made the course play very difficult, but otherwise great weather.

Conditions are solid, as expected here. Greens were smooth, firm and fast. Downwind full shots, chips and even putts were nearly impossible to keep on the green. They just didn't stop running until they found the fringe or rough. Conversely, you had to give putts into the wind a good thump to get them to the hole. Fairways were good. Rough is overseeded and a couple inches deep, not very penal. Sometimes around the green the lush, fluffy rough actually made it easier to the chip the ball than the tighter fairways. I was in one bunker, which was good. Yellow (Championship) tee boxes were good, a little divot damage on some holes.

I know Paiute is beloved by most all, but I'm still iffy about it and this round certainly didn't help. Yes, the courses are very nice and conditions are always reliable. But I'm starting to feel like it's the Desert Dunes of Las Vegas -- a really nice layout built in an extremely windy area. The wind and slick greens made it play too tough to really enjoy all that much, and because I've encountered windy conditions more times than not at Paiute, I'll definitely think twice before considering playing here again. The Tuesday forecast called for winds around 10 mph in Las Vegas, but they had to be 3X that at Paiute.
