Played E-Ranch on Januray 24 and regretted every minute. I remember now why I stopped playing here. It started at check-in. I renewed my JC card recently but because I played on a weekday, the pro shop tried to convince me to pay for the round and not use a free round coupon because I'd be "losing money and wasting a coupon". My buddy checked in behind me and they went after him hard to renew his JC card. Annoying, to say the least. We also got reminded about 5 times about their POP program, but no one did anything on the course to help us finish in less than 5 hours (POP program states 4.5 hours). Worst of all, the course is an absolute train wreck. Fairways are thin/bare, rough is non-existent, greens are the worst I've played in years - unrepaired ball marks, tine marks from the last aeration, dead spots, bumpy areas that are like minefields to putt through. If you play E-Ranch, get on the green and then just give yourself a 2-putt to save the frustration. The course conditions were beyond awful and I'm now done with this course (again). It's too bad, because it's in a beautiful location. Total waste of 5 hours to play here, on a weekday no less. Can't even imagine what the POP would be on a weekend...

I played Encinitas Ranch on 1/11/13. The previous reviews mentioned some holes having work on them but that is concluded. With the normal weekend price tag of $100 per person the course had alot of live up too and unfortunately it did not deliver. There are great ocean views on alot of holes while the tee boxes and fairways were above average. The greens were bumpy with some ball damage but the main complaint would lie with the fringe which had numerous bare spots. The sand traps were a bit on the wet side. There is often two holes side by side and you can play from the other fairway without a penalty; this and the short distance explains the nickname of "Easy Ranch." If you really want to see the ocean while playing golf this place has great ocean views which might be its only saving grace but when judged against the green fee it is hard to justify the round.

Played Encinitas Ranch on 8/18 and the course was in good shape. Like others have mentioned, holes 5 and 11 are having work done on them. On hole #11, there is a temporary par 3 at ~100 yards. Hole #11 is split into a par 3 and a par 4. I have to say that although there is a temporary green, it is a nice green and playable. On to the rest of the course!

Tee boxes: Tees were nice with no boxes that I can remember that were terribly chewed up. I would say that they were green and lush.

Fairways: Fairways were very tight with a few barespots on every hole. For the prices that this place demands, not too great.

Fairway bunkers: FB's were OK, many of the bunkers have been upgraded with new, resort-style white sand. The improved bunkers were very nice.

Rough: The rough was decent; definitely spotty in areas with mixed heights, varied grass varieties and varied lushness. The rough was not too punishing if you missed some fairways.

Greens: Greens were good but slightly pocked by balls. This course could be considered an easier course in SD county and the greens showed it.

Greenside bunkers: Nice and consistent. These should get better as management continues to improve sand conditions.

All in all a nice course. If you like to get a deal when you play, "the Ranch" might not be your course. There are great views from many of the tee boxes and it is a great place to bring an out of town friend or family member for some golf. There is some construction going on right now but when it is finished, hopefully the course will be nicer than ever. I like this course a lot for the views but it seems pretty easy. I always feel that I should destroy this course but for some reason it never happens!

Nice layout in the hills of Encinitas a few miles inland. Fairways a bit dry in places and the rough is patchy, not what I would consider well conditioned. Greens were soft and had many 'tufts' made by spike marks and many poorly repaired ball marks. Not an ideal putting surface for the green fees ($68 weekend w/cart, JC card guest rate saved us $12). I enjoy the layout at ER but conditions are never up to expectations. Marginally recommended if you can get a green fee discount.

Great staff working this course from pro shop to starter to greens keeper to cart lady. Course in great shape for the time of the year. Greens smooth and rolling well with the exception of a few starting with the ninth green. They were a bit bumpy and slightly slower due to spring maintenance. Fairways and tee boxes in very good shape also with only a couple bare spots here and there in fairways. Great views of the surrounding neighborhoods and a couple holes you can see the ocean. A bit expensive for some, but worth it to play at least once. Would be back if it was a bit closer to the Inland Empire.

Walked on here this morning. Bought a JC Golf deal on Underpar for $59 (any day) and used it here, so it was a decent deal for a weekend morning. Got there a little after 7, but the place was busy and I was low on the wait list. Ended up teeing off at 9:00. Pace of play just under 4:30, so not bad. The starter, Chuck, was great as he kept me up to date with my chances of getting out and kept the first tee organized and running on time. I like that the course sets 10 minute tee times and it keeps fairly evenly spaced.

The course was in decent shape. The greens are pretty much recovered from the aeration. A few bumps here and there, but mostly smooth. Soft and very receptive. The fairways are pretty patchy, but mostly had OK lies. Seems like a couple different grasses growing in, so inconsistent throughout. Rough was pretty good for the most part, not too punishing, but enough to make you work. Bunkers were very damp, so it was hard to get a read on the sand in them. Tee boxes were mostly great, but there was one blue tee (#14) that was in a horrible spot with a bunch of little depressions.

Overall, I enjoyed the course and the layout. Someone recently told me it was "nothing special," but I was pleasantly surprised. The layout is pretty forgiving other than a few tricky holes. Some good ocean views once the morning overcast lifted. I like the stretch of holes on the front (5-8) and how they use the elevation changes. Big greens with subtle breaks toward the ocean. For the right price, it's worth checking out.

Played here on 1/28 for the first time in 10 months and the course is in decent condition for the winter. Fairway are dormant with some green spots. The dormant grass does have some body but there are many "thin" areas. Greens are better than average, firm and fast. Sand trap are also better than average. Rough has some body along with some bare spots. Pace of play was just over 4 hours but we were first out. Nice sunny but cool day.

The 2nd 18 of my day on Tuesday and the course is getting ready to go into full maintenance next week and it is in dire need of it. The greens are a mess, with a ridiculous amount of ball marks and dead areas. I only hope that maintenance can fix it. Many tee boxes unlevel and hard to find a place to put a tee without standing on a slope. Fairways are in good shape with some bare spots but everything was marked GUR. I think if I were playing this weekend, I would find somewhere else to play until they undergo maintenance.

Saturday afternoon tee time , 3 players, two carts- sent out after 4 walkers. After waiting on every shot for 3 holes, we caught em on the tee at #4 and asked to play through, they pointed out that they were waiting on the cart 4some ahead of them and went on... so there we sat stagnant for the rest of a 5 hour round that should have taken 4. The marshals were totally ineffective. On #7 africanized bees came up out of the canyon to the right of the green. Got me dead in the neck - off work because of it today, got my partner less seriously, but just below the eye. Told the pro shop at the turn (no marshal in sight til then), and they just said, 'oh yeah, we know'.. felt they completely blew off a serious -potentially deadly, situation. Finally... the bunkers were wet and hard packed... like hitting off of concrete... I feel I play with as postive, as well as patient and tolerant an attitude as anybody, and I enjoy this course.. but this day was way out of line, I could have been doing something better somewhere else...
