I’m down in the Tucson area of Vail for my wife’s work trip and played Del Lago this morning. It was a bit of a chore to get to the course with crazy road paving going on and my GPS directing me wrong but made it in time. I was supposed to tee of at 910 with a twosome but they left early. Another foursome let me play through so I pretty much had the course to myself. A few groups teeing off behind me but I didn’t catch anyone until the last couple of holes.
Nice facilities on the range with plenty of space to hit from. Course conditions overall were a little rough around the edges. The course could use some maintenance on the cart paths. They are super rough. Basic golf carts with no GPS so it was a learning experience with the first time playing the course.
The fairways were in good shape as were the greens. Sand traps were a mixed bag. Dormant rough with not much of a penalty hitting it there.
A nice play right now and I’m glad I got to enjoy the course.
I enjoyed the course itself. I thought it was fun with a good variety of holes. Water comes into play on a few holes. Strategy and being able to hit your ball where you want is a must. I wouldn’t call it target desert golf but anything off the fairways is in the desert.

Practice putting area is excellent. Plenty of challenging putts. Driving range is more than adequate hitting off nice grass. This course is not for those not in some control of there golf ball (I have a little). If not, bring plenty of balls. Forced carries and penal if fairways/greens missed. Some water hazards. First tee shot is forced carry of 180yds from the Silver tee (6300yds) to a narrow landing area. Second is 170yd par 3 with DEEP bunkers right with little bail out to left or short. "Long is wrong" on virtually every green. That being said, fun, beautiful course in great shape at all times. Never a dull moment. All aspects of the course are very well maintained.

I reviewed this recently and nothing has changed but i have some photos this time. Southern Arizona can really put some teeth into it's target golf. These shots at Del Lago show it. Great staff and course. Check the photos of the monsoon rolling in on us and the wild Bob cat who gave me a show at a tee box. FUN stuff.

Played for the first time and it is a great course. Very good shape right now. I'll play tighter next time now that I've seen some danger zones. It has every aspect you could want (or not) Elevation changes,forced carries over desert and water,vicious bunker placements, snaking fairways, blind greens d%mn ! Just gorgeous though. I heard it's owned by the fella who owns the water company so it STAYS green. Right now some courses are dry from temps. The landscaped elements were very well done and involved in play. I like that. This is what Fred Enke wants to be when it grows up. Fred Enke is a local city course. Well worth the 20 minute drive from east Tucson. Loved it!
Why can't I hit a ball 145 yds. if it's over water? This is what I brought back from today.

I played this course on 10-24-12 with 2 buddies.
Try to get to this course early so as to use the practice facilities as kept in great condition and close to starting hole as well as ranger who lets you know when group is on deck. The course was in fabulous condition as just coming out of overseeding and carts allowed on fairways. Usually play this course in spring so playing in the fall was new experience. Being the middle of the week suprised by the slow play but beverage cart made up for it by showing up often. Course offers ample tee box selection, with challenges at each one, I usually tee forward with my buddies and able to enjoy the course for all its splendor and glory. All in all a fun course kept in prestine condition and one of the better finishing holes in the area.

Played on 9/3/2011 and what a MAJOR disappointment. Normally this is one of the better conditioned courses in the area. Booked the tee time on one of the online booking sites, and it wasn't until we arrived that there was any information about "temporary greens" being used. There were probably 5 (or so) temporary greens in use . . and they were smoother than the "regular" greens being used. I have never played on greens as bad as those at del Lago right now. It was like putting on asphalt with potholes! In the customer service area, gone are the bag boys to unload your bags from the car and load them onto your cart and to welcome you to the course. This has been one of my favorite courses to play throughout the years, but it is a course to avoid right now. Personally, I would be embarrassed to charge money to play this course right now. On the bright side . . because of the horrid conditions, there weren't a lot of golfers, and the pace of play was great!

Played Del Lago last sunday....normally i dont mind drivin the 45 minutes door to door that it is for me because this is normally one of the better conditioned courses in the tucson area. and the layout is just extremely fun to play. great set of golf holes. good birdie chances along with holes where a par almost feels like a birdie. But back to last weekend, when i drove up i was highly dissapointed to find that they had not overseeded the fairways this year. I dont know what the reasoning behind this is and im not gonna blame anybody, just in case there is a legitimate reason for them not overseeding, but i was extremely dissapointed. the course was still in good shape. greens were very good, and the areas around the greens were overseeded and very lush. but the fairways all being dormant made it very difficult to make solid contact with irons. overall a fun course, and i will be back.

I play this course pretty regularly . . sometime better than others. Played with a guy from Virginia who joined our group today, so I'll use his comments about the course as the basis for my review. Very interesting holes. Liked the fact that there were sunken and elevated greens. Liked the elevated tee boxes on many of the holes. Liked the elevation changes. Says they don't get a lot of elevation changes back in the Virginia area where he regulary plays. He said he really enjoys "desert golf" because of the forced carries, and although del Lago doesn't have a lot of "monster carries" off the tee box the ones that are there make you think about shaping your shot. The course conditions are very nice right now. We played early with a 7:22 tee time, and zoomed around the course quicker than we had ever played it before. The only drawback (if you want to call it that) was that there was a minimum of staffers available that early, so it was unload/load your own bags. If you were not familiar with the course layout, as our playing parter found himself to be, then it was a little "disconcerting" (to use his vergiage) to not know where to unload your bag . . whether you needed to load it on to a cart yourself, which cart to take, etc . . This is a nice course as I have mentioned in my previous reviews. Well worth the drive 20 minutes out of town to play.

It has been a while since I played del Lago . . it's won't be as long next time! Played 3/7/2009 and the course is in as good a shape as I've ever seen it! This is a very nice layout with a great mix of twisting and turning 5's, dogleg 4's, and long 3's with undulating greens. This course has all the elements that I really like in desert golf, elevation changes, forced carries, water carries, and a penalizing desert area if you stray off course. This is one of the nicest layouts in the Tucson area, and with conditions like they are right now . . it becomes a must play course!
