I have played Silverbell since the 1980s. The redesign made it more interesting and challenging. There are lots of level changes and greens that are sloped and fast. My only criticism is there are a few bunkers that don't have much sand and you are basically hitting off of hard pan. But most of the bunkers are fine. The current staff is the best group I can remember, they have made Silverbell a pleasure to play. To think the city was considering closing this course just over a year ago, what a turnaround!

My first review after lurking on this site for years and finding a lot of helpful information, so it's about time I give back some. The course conditions were pleasantly surprising. Apparently this course is managed by OB Sports for the city of Tucson, and OB has been doing a great job with some of the Phoenix muni courses I usually play during the past 2 years. Fairways had a great overseed, played firm, greens were fairly smooth and fast, sand was fine. Typical dormant Bermuda rough. Really nothing to complain about with conditions for a muni, though the fairways near the ponds were completely covered in goose turds. After a glance at the scorecard, I had decided on playing the yellow tees (5,843 yards) due to it being cold, and the whites (6391) having 4 par 4 holes at 420+ which usually isn't enjoyable for me. The yellows gave me some good variety, except the 3 of the par 3 holes played about the same (155-160ish). There is some elevation change throughout the course. I originally had a tee time around 8:15. Staff member said the area the course is in usually gets much colder overnight than the rest of the city. Accordingly, there was a 45 minute frost delay. Due to cancellations, the starter was able to move me ahead, joining two other walkers as the second group off. The first group left us in the dust after few holes, and we finished 18 in about 3:10 as a walking threesome. Very easy course to walk. Overall, nothing particularly memorable here, just decent affordable walking golf. The course has a small snack bar-type restaurant, and a beverage cart was out on the course.

This course is plush...comparable to courses that charge 3 times as much. ( bunkers were not playable due to overnights rains, but were fully loaded with , what looked like fresh sand. )
If you haven't played here since the city owned the municipal courses....you'll be impressed with what a professional transformation has taken place.
Sure hope Southern AZ. supports the continuing efforts that make our munies some of the best. ( what a difference a couple of years and a professional management company makes! )

Played this course on Sunday. I'll start with the good....which is much. The greens were soft and running fast. Now for all that is wrong. Saw the cart girl twice in 5 hours. Fairways were over watered. Yes.... in AZ over watering is a sin! Lift, clean and replace on a sunny day in the desert. Brown spots and flooding on the same fairway. Will never play a muni in Tucson ever again.

This is a city course and is not my favorite but the price is alright. The course plays long some fairways are hard to reach without at least a 200 yard drive And that's just to reach them. Others are not so bad but they have some LONG par 3's for an average golfer. This course plays pretty simple if your a big hitter as it's straight and mild elevation. The sand is awful like all the city courses and the course looks like crap, coming from a guy who manages a landscape department for a resort so I may be over judgmental but look at the photos. I like hole 11 which surprises me every time with the 90 degree fairway to green turn. Greens are fast and in good shape. Staff is nice but not a "put it on your list" course if your in the area. Most city courses aren't. Fun with my kid was the goal though and I did get that.

Silverbell like most city ran course is an "dog track"! How they can charge what they are charging to play there is amazing. Then there is no good feedback from Golfnow.com because they don't have anybody on the ground here in Tucson. Good rule of thumb "stay off the public courses" especially the other course are in better shape and ran better.

Well Worth the Muni Price. Much improved since this summer. They're not skimping on water and the greens are in super shape.
Give it a try while it's not crowded and word gets out that it is better.

Early Friday (7 Nov 08) morning tee time at 0712 for $20 on ezLinks.com. At 40F, almost chilly enough for frosty grass. No wind screens installed on carts. Cart path only makes for a lot of walking for the wide fairways which are in MUCH better condition than they were this summer. Silverbell must have a new Greenskeeper for the greens are in the best shape I've ever putted on. And what a shame because they rolled true and I couldn't blame the course. Cart Path only and past history of poor conditions leave this improved course wide open for uncrowded play.
