With a summit date for Mt Whitney over the weekend, it was a no-brainer to bring our clubs and go play Mt Whitney Golf Club en route to the campsite. It was last Thur morning and the course, as expected, was empty.

We decided to play the course twice with cart for $40. I can understand why they have to charge that amount with so few customers, but when you think of what you can easily find in LA for $40, it's a bit outrageous. But whatever, this is a quaint experience, not championship golf.

Conditions varied per hole, but were mostly sub-standard. The greens were super spongy, small and slow as molasses, until the wind kicked up fierce, like 40-50 mph, then the ball just took off in weird directions. Some fairways were okay, but others were dried out and it was often difficult to even figure out where to try and land the ball. Tee boxes were just okay, while the rough was a pretty dismal mix of weeds, old wheelbarrows, and tree bark, along with some patches of uneven grass.

Layout is fine I guess, although it was all messed up in my Swing by Swing app, which means I have to figure out which hole actually corresponded to which hole. The views are pretty awesome of the mountain range, but the weather closed in quick as a fall storm does, so that didn't help the play at all. Driving the cart was also an experience - the place has no cart path and is more worthy of a 4x4 than golf cart.

Look, if you're passing by on the 395, have your clubs and simply want to whack the ball around for 9 or 18 holes, this is the place for you. If not, it was a good thing to say I did it but I won't be planning any more rounds there in the near future.
