Took a trip to No Calif to visit family and set a tee time with an old friend to play Brentwood as I have never played here before. Had a Friday, 7:28 time playing Creekside/Hillside, $29 online rate and the starter sent us out as a twosome. Pace was slow. There was a 3 some ahead of us but it was the 4 some ahead of them that slowed things down. They let the 3 some play through and later offered us a chance to play through but we declined. We didn’t mind the wait as waiting allowed me to catch up with old times with my friend who I have not seen in some time. 4.5 hours to finish. The 3 some behind us though was really upset with the slow play! Hey chill out guys!! The group ahead was slow largely because they clearly don’t play much. Let’s just say they weren’t 2 handicaps and were erratic. Sometimes that’s the way it is. We all started out the same I am sure. The marshal out there apologized but not much he can do. The course is in ok shape. Some of the fairways were a bit saturated with water but there was good grass out there. Looked like they could have used a mower as it was thick and balls were not rolling out much. Some dry spots but not many. Sand traps were damp, hard and difficult to get out of. This seems to be a common theme among public golf courses. Tee boxes were a mixture of grass and weeds. Not too appealing. In fact there are quite a few weeds and tall, uncut grass out there. Some holes had weeds just off of the fairways and it was easy to lose balls. Greens were soft, lush but uncut and very slow. They pretty much needed a mower. Nice undulations with a lot of the greens and would be very challenging if the they were rolling faster. Customer service could improve. The starter was great and got us out on time and in order. The starter did tell us the two nines we were playing does not come back by the clubhouse so there was no chance to get a snack or drink as we made the turn. Didn’t think this was a problem but all of the water stations out there except one were empty. On a warm morning, that’s a problem. Wish I knew as I would have brought water. Also, we didn’t find a men’s room until the 11th hole. Also a problem as we really had to go. This course doesn’t knock you out but it does have a nice layout. Heard the wind can blow pretty good out here and affects play but not on this day. Improvements with this course is largely cosmetic. Nothing that a good mower couldn’t solve. A lot of retired locals play here. Many have “souped” up golf carts. I really enjoyed it out there and would play again.
