Plays a lot different at 8 am than my usual
6 am. Greens were dry. Fairways weren't soaked. Restaurant was open, pro shop was open, men's bathroom was accesible, snack shop on 12 was open. Early in the morning, these aren't available and it's inexcusable. The course was in good shape, a good 4 3/4 hour pace, good track overall.

Rancho is now in okay shape. Greens are back to being bumpy and generally slow, with the normal number of unrepaired ball marks - that is to say, easily five to thirty on any given green. Like other... Continue »

Rancho is now in okay shape. Greens are back to being bumpy and generally slow, with the normal number of unrepaired ball marks - that is to say, easily five to thirty on any given green. Like other LA Munis, this place is phenomenally overwatered. The beautiful condition the course was in back in May is clearly just a memory. They do have the police/celebrity tourney there every year about the same time; the week after the tournament is clearly the best week to play this faded beauty.

I take back some of the negative things I said about Rancho. While it still could use quite a bit of work, it was in much better condition than just a week ago. They are now finished with sanding the greens and they have turned out pretty nice. Still L.A. public course quality but good considering. The rest of the course was O.K., but much better than my previous feedback.

Played on July 1. This course does well in the June Gloom. However, with the sun coming out, the fairways were dry in places and in need of a good watering.

I always walk and at Rancho, I can fix a 100 fairway divots and not make any progress. Seems like I have grooved my swing at the local astro turf ranges and I only take a small slice.
Its a love hate thing with me and Rancho. Mostly its love. Now with the course a little tore up, the loving is fading. Played Wilson the week before to break the monotony. Wilson is tore up too. But the back nine is in good shape. But I digress. Rancho is worth the money.

I take back what I said about Rancho last month. It was in great shape then. Now it plays like downtown Baghdad. They sanded the greens again, apparently to prevent them from burning this summer. I hope so because they are terrible now. The fairways are full of divots the size of dollar bills and larger. The traps were full of very wet sand. Not just one or two but about everyone that I noticed. The entire course is a major disappointment compared to last month.

Played 6/28. Greens still in poor shape after aeration. Slow and bumpy. Give it another week.

Went out for dawn patrol this morning, 5/21 and was absolutely delighted to see the course in truly great shape. It's a major turnaround from March -- they got it in great shape for the Police/Celebrity Tournament last Saturday, and I sure hope they keep it that way. The greens are as good as I've seen them since they were all replaced. There were still five or six ball marks to fix on just about every green, but they've healed beautifully from the aeration and they're rolling pretty smooth indeed. Fairways are as good as I've ever seen them, and some tee boxes would be acceptable at a private course. Now is absolutely the time to play Rancho... let's hope they can keep it looking and playing this nice!

I played Rancho for the first time in my life today 5/16/03. I really enjoyed the Course. The first hole was a Temporary Par 3 due to a Tournament being played this weekend. The course is in great shape for a public course. I was told that I wouldn't finish with a 1:30 pm time, but finished with daylight to spare. I guess I got lucky. I'm proud to say I shot 84. I'm currently a 16 handicap. The historic 18th was fun dodging balls from the Driving Range, but managed a par knowing Arnold Palmer took a 12. Rancho is everything people talk about and more. I would love to play there again.
