Wind, wind, wind. I didn’t want to play in Galveston because it’s almost always very windy, but my BIL works here and wanted to work this morning. So we played at noon on a clear, moderate, windy day that got more cloudy as the afternoon progressed. This is a very flat course on estuarine land adjacent to the airport, which can easily be walked. No GPS on carts, but many sprinkler heads are marked, and a yardage book is available. Today wind was from the SE and therefore many holes played in a crosswind, or quartering into from the left. As I was hitting the ball poorly, this made for a lot of frustrating ground-huggers. Hole widths are generally adequate for play if you account for both the crosswind and your (consistent) shot shape. Greens show evidence of recent punching, looking like a checkerboard, but are extremely firm, rarely showing a ball mark. They rolled well at medium-fast speeds. Green collars showed more evidence of recent sanding and were much softer. Fairways were thin but provided good lies. Rough varied from close-cut to several inches deep. Many holes are bordered by water from the fingers of the estuary. Tees were generally OK. Sand was soft, fluffy, and very adequate for shots around the greens. The course was not very crowded, and we played behind a quick 4some in just under 4 hours. Nice municipal-level clubhouse with small grill. Saw the cart girl a few times; adequate water available on-course. Driving range on mats today, and good-size putting green that accurately represented what we encountered on the course. OK if you can get past the wind. Did I mention the wind!!?
