Hi gents. It's been awhile. After 3 back surgeries, loss of my wife and marriage to number 2, it's been a few years of turmoil for me.

I've finally escaped California and moved to Prescott so StoneRidge is now my backyard. This course will challenge every player. I love the layout with the canyon like configuration. You will not be able to walk the course as it it extremely long between many holes (someone told me 6-8mi of travel). The course is always well maintained. Great food and POP is always good. Bring lots of balls as errant shots are typically not found. The best times are off season, before May and after September. The prime time months will be over $100 a round and hot for sure, but the off season affords some savings at $40-$50 a round. Hope that helps and if your ever in the area HMU and lets go play!

Also the $ should be at least $$ maybe $$$ for prime season.

Played 6/14/21. Probably the most impressive aspect of this course is the engineering it took to put a golf course on a very difficult site. The landscape is deeply dissected by washes, steep slopes and dense high desert vegetation. As such, the course is quite spread out to get between locations where holes could be sited. My guess is that the accumulated distance between holes nearly equals the yardage of the course itself. Thinking about putting in irrigation, concrete cart paths and electrical controls on this site--and the cost of doing so--is very impressive. They also have carts I've not seen before, they are electric, which is rare on slopes this steep, but they are geared down so that the ups and downs are handled easily. They also have "no brainer" brakes that come on when you stop, which is critical to not let one get away!

The course itself is a pretty wild ride, with lots of forced carries, vertical changes, and blind shots. It was in good shape, greens a bit slow for my taste (10ish) but overall quite well conditioned. The setting is pretty undeveloped and quite scenic for the most part, you are at a high elevation with nice views.

Course has an extremely fun layout and is visually appealing. Most of the course was in good playable condition. The greens were slow and bumpy still recovering from punching (the practice green was the best green) but the bones for super fun greens were evident. Love to play them when they are smooth and quick! My bad possibly picking the white tees, just under 6,000/126 slope, as the course was a bit tame from there, but the next tees back were 6,400/133 and after reading about the blind shots, hills, contours, etc. I thought the whites would be better. Next time we’ll move back to where Sal will be more comfortable and I might get a bit more challenged/get my butt kicked!

Played here today (4/29) with the one and only RatPatrol on an 11a.m. tee time with absolutely perfect Prescott weather; 75 and very slight wind all day. The last time I was here, less than two months ago, the course was still in bad winter shape; recovering from snow/ice, dormant turf, the works. Today was a different tale with only the greens still healing somewhat (in varied degrees) from punching probably 4 weeks ago. The visual difference in the grass helped highlight a course on the verge of being in peak shape.

Tees: A few chewed up boxes (whites played by both Jim and I) but nothing too upsetting. A few uneven lies here and there and the turf could use some TLC, other than that fine.

Fairways: The highlight of the round. They visually popped, adding to the enjoyment. The roll was more than fair, the ball sat up on 90% of the shots and they were in just good to great shape.

Rough: Penal at times but far more penal than the rough is the ESA and natural terrain that flanks the course.

Sand: Was only in two bunkers and they both had a decent amount of sand. Bunkers are present here so conditions were better than courses that are still using foot-rakes.

Greens: A bit of letdown that they had not healed 100% since they were punched. A few bumpy putts here and there, but overall medium to slow speeds with some really tricky breaks.

ETC: Property offers what you need: clubhouse has more than enough gear and drinks for last minute thirst quenching. Was told by our playing partners that the grill puts out great food and cart did have a small menu that indicated you order on 8th tee. Staff was friendly and helpful. Beverage cart attendant came around twice (moving our carts when we, I guess, blocked her way), golf carts could use some TLC or simply be replaced; balding tire, wear and tear to all parts of the cart, no GPS. The layout is fun and challenging, think Salt Creek/Mt. Woodson/Steele Canyon hybrid. Highly recommend before they up prices for summer.

Played here today (3/7) for the first time ever with my father in law on a breezy (consistent 10-15mph wind) but comfortable day. I didn't know too much about this course/conditions except for the GK reviews, unfortunately not many if any of them are from post-winter play and it hurt today as StoneRidge was in pretty poor winter shape; visually and play-wise. I had no real expectation I would see a Quintero-style course rolling up but all the dings and scrapes this course shows eventually take a toll.

Tee boxes: Pretty weak honestly. Played the yellow/gold tees and just about every one was a sand pit. Either the tee sank in like it was placed in quicksand, or it almost broke because the ground was so hard. Good to see a nice amount of tee options honestly.

Fairways: Okay to good but mostly meh. I get winter-conditions lead to dormant grasses, dry conditions, etc. but when the grass is the same color as the chaparral.... I saw a drive today bounce about 10 feet in the air after hitting the fairway and there is no excuse for this.

Rough: No real rough to speak of as the OB/canyons are far more prevalent on this course, but whatever rough DID exist was not really penal.

Sand: Was in one bunker today and it was a fairway bunker. Had enough sand however the sand was more like dirt than real beach sand, which for some people is great though I don't see how for green-side bunkers.

Greens: There was no highlight of the round in regards to conditions. The greens were okay but they had plenty of sand on them and they were visually gross. The roll wasn't very true at times and the speed varied from very slow to lightning quick, so hard to get a feel for them.

ETC: POP was 4.5 hours but it felt eternal with waiting everywhere and groups playing at lightning fast speeds behind us, pressuring our group to hurry (someone literally came up to me to ask if I had a gun because the guys behind THEM kept hitting into them....'Murica/Zona). Property is in a housing track but layout was extremely fun; in good shape, this would be an amazing course. Carts had no GPS and were dated (our playing partners' tire blew out on the 5th hole). Basic range and warmup area. I think I saw more people not wearing masks than were in terms of employees. No food/drink cart, nor was any advertised anywhere. A few bathrooms on the course. Clubhouse had more than the basics and check-in process was good. Again, if this course can green up, improve playing conditions, and received some TLC, I would highly recommend. Cannot recommend now even at $50.

Overview: StoneRidge Golf Course is a Randy Heckenkemper golf course that opened for play in Prescott Valley in 2002. Prescott Valley sits at about 5,000 feet of elevation and sits just north of the Bradshaw Mountains. The temperature runs about 15 degrees cooler than the Phoenix metro area, and from my home it's only about a 90 minute drive.
What I love about the course is that they do not overseed in the winter, so it is a great course to play when the Phoenix golf courses are being overseeded. I have probably played this course about 30 times since it opened, but I was surprised to see that I never did a review about it.

Clubhouse: Nice clubhouse that fits in well with the StoneRidge home community. It normally has a nice restaurant and outdoor seating area, but due to COVID-19 the only food available was by takeout or being able to sit on the outside patio area between 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. COVID-19 restrictions are not seriously enforced, but you can ride in a cart as single.

Course: One of my favorite courses because it is very challenging and very unique. The course has a lot of elevation changes, a fair amount of blind tee shots and a lot of forced carries. Bottom line ... you can't spray the ball and you need to play with someone that has played the course if you have not played there. The course is not long ... a little under 6400 yards from the gold tees and what is very enjoyable is that there is a few risk reward holes and some good par 3's. The green complexes are quite large and they have a fair amount of slope in them. The were not in the best of shape because they were cut the day before (they only cut them every other day). The fairways were in good shape and the rough was a little bit tough because it was cut at about 1-2 inches. The views of the surrounding area are great especially on the back nine where Mingus Mountain and the Bradshaw Mountains are in view.

Final Thoughts: Many people do not play StoneRidge because they feel that the course can be too tough because of the forced carries and the wind that always seems to blow in the Arizona "high country". Years ago we use to pay $50 for "golf and lunch", but those days are long gone. The rates are now $79 Mon - Thurs, $89 Fri - Sun, and twilight is $48 after 2:30 pm. Rates will drop further starting November 1st.

The course had just been aerated 5 days before, thus the poor ratings for the greens. Still very sandy but not so bumpy as un-puttable. I played this course before and the greens were fantastic, lightning fast. When the greens are rolling and the severe elevation / target-style golf could make this course too penal for the weekender type of golfer.

Played the first round from the gold tees with some friends who had never seen the course. Didn't remember some carry distances and paid the steep price several times. Shot at least high-90s (play to 11 handicap).

Played second round from whites with a couple who have played a dozen times. Really paid attention to carry distances / recommendations. Shot best score of my life at 78.

Overall, this is an amazing course with beautiful views and no houses. You would easily pay triple for this golf in Scottsdale. There are no two holes alike. There are some drivable par-4s, par-5 that can be reached and par-3 so scary that you will want to lay up (I Did and still pared it).

Well worth the drive.

Greens were firm and fast and smooth for the most part. No GPS on carts. I thought they had GPS when I played this course in 2005. This course is pure target golf so bring your rangefinder!

Every hole requires thought and execution. The course is a joy to play if you carry the ball and stay out of the rough. My favorite local course and priced good.
