I found myself in Surprise on business, finished early and decided to try this course out. Like Julia Roberts said to the snotty store clerk in Pretty Woman, "Big mistake. BIG mistake."

Most tee boxes were neglected Kikuyu, grassy enough but overgrown (though some on the back 9 were mowed properly, it only made me wonder why ALL of them weren't like this). A number of tee boxes also weren't level. The fairways were an utterly overwatered, muddy mess, with many bare spots scattered throughout the course. Grass clippings were everywhere as well, forcing me to clean around my ball time and again to get a good shot. Greens were very soft and very slow. You could shoot a golf ball out of a bazooka and it would slow down after 30 feet on these greens. Never made it into a bunker, but the sand in them looked thin and crispy. The aptly named rough appears to be simply not mowed, as opposed to cultivated.

The few water stations on the course poured out tepid, poorly tasting water and the cart paths had so many potholes that they must have been sponsored by a local chiropractor. Really, the course just seems old and neglected, with no memorable holes or style, just a long, flat, dreary march back to the clubhouse.

When compared to the Del Webb's seven courses that are available in the same area (in far superior shape and less expensive), Hillcrest simply seems superfluous. Knowing what I know now, I'll only golf at Grandview et al, and keep this course off my rotation.

I played last Sunday. and even though they were letting carts on the course. they still had not done a final cut to the fairways or greens so everything was slow. They do not over seed the rough so it is just dormant Bermuda but it played well. The staff was great but they did not have a cart service on the course. I paid $40 for 2 after 2 and it was not worth the price. I hope it gets better by the end of the year because I tend to play there a few times in prime season.

Played 18 holes in 3 hours!! This course is not intertwined in houses and has some really good golf holes. There are a lot of holes where water may come in to play and require some good golf shots. The greens are in pretty good shape but there are some ball marks but it's not too bad.

The rough is pretty bad. Like most Az courses, only the fairways are overseeded, so there are a lot of bare spots. Also, the sand was TERRIBLE!!! It was like hitting off of a parking lot.

This course has A TON of potential and is worth the green fee. Just make sure to manage your expectations before going out.

I have been playing here for 20 years and this is by far the absolute worst shape this course has ever been in. Bare spots in all fairways, burnt out spots on tee boxes and dead spots on the greens. This used to be my home course. I now will avoid this course until I hear that the place has been improved.

Played Sunday 4/10... Course played well, greens were soft, especially since we had a lot of rain the day before... Fairways in great shape... Rough was pretty thin, but pretty common for the winter time... The pins on the Par 5's were all back which made the three tiered #3 very difficult, especially if you got on the bottom of the green... There is water on number of holes with many up hill and down hill holes... Course managment comes into play on this course... The sand in the bunkers, of which I hit on each of the final 4 holes, is a little inconsistent, sometimes it was very thick other times it is pretty thin... The course is entirely self contained, from the 16th hole you can look back over the entire course... Well worth the money!!!

Played on Black friday. The fairawys were mostly in good shape. A few thin spots. The rough is burmuda and was dorment and brown. Only about 1 inch deep which made it very easy to find your ball. This course has a lot of water in play but also has wide landing areas for the most part. Greens where alittle thin in places but overall good and consistant.
We went out as a twosome following a foursome that was one of the slowest I have ever been behind. The group ahead of them had two walkers and by the time we got to the fifth hole they were atleast a hole and a half ahead. We never saw a marshel and at the the turn we went to the pro shop and asked for someone to help and were told no marshel was on the course. Nothing was done. We went in and got a couple of drinks-hotdogs and used the restroom and still caught the slowpokes by the 11th. we were waiting on them on a par three and they never offered to let us play through.

Overall a nice course and we will be back.
