I played here yesterday morning. Paid $28 (add $2.49 GN service fee), plus $6 for their Riksha big wheel pull cart. If you have not seen or used this type of pull cart you’d be amazed at how easy it is. There were a few other golfers but I got out between groups and a half hour before my 8:57 tee time. I was able to complete 18 in under 3 hours. There was a little maintenance going on, mostly on the back nine (sand pro/ trap raking and fairway mowing).

Greens looked and putted well. A few were partially aerated and all recently had a very light sand top dressing. That sucked because my putts would gather a fair amount of sand and either not make it or roll off line if the stroke was not perfect. It wasn’t horrible and overall they were nice to look at and held shots.

Fairways were good. Lots of good coverage and great to hit from. The low areas could be wet due to all the recent rain. With that said, you are not going to get much roll out on your drives. After I got to hole 15, the fairways were mowed and roll out got a little better.

Rough was not too deep. It was wet and hadn’t been mowed yet. Still, it was fairly easy to hit from. If you miss badly, you could find yourself in bare ground/tree litter; however, those areas were not too penal.

Bunkers were getting turned and raked. The sand was very damp and the bunker to the right of hole 2 was mostly a water feature. I was in a couple of bunkers and had no trouble getting out.

Tees (I played the white tees) were level and lush. No issues there. There are 5 sets of tees and the yardage varies from 7098 on the blacks down to 4107 on the yellows.

Overall the course is interesting and challenging. Hole 7 is a monster uphill par 5 with a second shot over water. If your drive is short consider a lay up because it’s a long carry. A couple other holes will challenge you with carries as well. There are many trees just budding out or flowering now making this a pretty course to look at. All in all, it seems like a great course and the rates are reasonable. I did not use them, but they do have a great looking practice facility.

First round of the summer here in portland. Decided to get out close to where i was staying. Was the first one out so started at 520 finished before 830. The course is playing well in that there are no water restrictions over here so the course will be green. Some areas were a little soggy. Since it was so early pace wasnt an issue but greens were slower than usual because of the morning dew. Locals complain about this course because of how busy it is but i play early so its no problem. They have an early bird special of 28 to walk. Will be back again since it is convenient but i will also be playing other courses in the area.

First round here in portland for the summer. Got out by myself at around 6 was back in the car before 9 which is a great pace of play. Walked for $27 on an early bird price. Course condition is good compared to some dried out course back home. Fairways were covered in green grass but not soggy. Greens were medium speed in the morning I had to fix about 5 to 6 ball marks each green, so it's not just a cali thing. It was good to get back out on this course since it's so close to the in laws house. It feels like my own country club early in the morning. Will of course be back since this will be my home course for the next month. They changed the par of the 11th and 14th hole. 11 is now a par 5 while the 14th is now a par 4. This made more sense since it's weird to have a 414 yard par 5 even if it's straight uphill.

It has been awhile since I have played but I am here in portland for winter break. Had time in between cold snaps and decided to play at redtail on the 22nd. Got out for 24 dollars walking which is their winter rate. A couple minutes earlier and I would have paid 18, there early bird rate. The course is very soggy so I had to play winter rules A's balls would plug. Tee boxes were good level but very soft due to all the moisture. Fairways very soft everything would plug and you got no roll on drives. Rough is good about 2 inches thick. Greens rolled slow due to being wet but held its line. Pace of play was great for the front nine in that I played in 1.10. Back 9 was a different story in that I caught a slow foursome. It got so slow that 2 other singles caught up and we played a a 3 some the rest of the round. I enjoyed playing my first round in awhile. Hope to play 2 more rounds before I head back home from winter break.

Walked 18 with GK'ers NickEsquire1 and Tocho621 mid afternoon for $20 Golfnow rate. I like the challenge of this layout and most areas are lush but I was disappointed with numerous dry/bare spots everywhere. They need to water more. But that is the only drawback at this time.

Overall this course has it all. Plenty of clothes and equipment at good prices, a first class fitting system, lessons for all ages including a comprehensive junior training program, large driving range, chipping and putting practice areas and many certified instructors.

Teed off @ 220pm, enjoyed a round with GKers Longtee400 & Tocho261. Walked the blues (6682/72.6/130) in 4.5 hours on a busy Thur. afternoon for $20 on a prepaid Golfnow deal. This is a city of Portland course. First, the good, the layout is excellent. It's challenging, not too tight but there are enough forced carries over marshland, lakes or yellow staked hazards to get anyone's attention. There are also many areas of native grass that is knee deep and an almost certain lost ball or unplayable lie. You are constantly up/down hills and going around tall tree, lined fairways. The bad is that they just don't water or maintain it as well as they could/should. And it's a shame, this could really be an outstanding course. The greens putt decently, they are smooth, usually firm and medium speed. The downside is that numerous greens have some bare spots around the edges. And while they can avoid pin placements closeby, it's hit and miss on whether the bad spots could affect long putts or chips. Both the fairways and rough are usually semi lush, you usually get decent lies. However, every single hole has multiple large areas that are brown where the lie will be much more spotty. They flat out need more water. The sand traps were average, it didn't look like they were maintained on a daily basis. Our group had a couple of balls come to rest in unraked footprints. The tees were generally good, it looked like they rotated the tee markers often. The pro shop has a huge selection of golf clubs & merchandise in a tented area out front. A nice chipping and practice area. I really like the course, and would play here alot more if the conditions came close to matching the quality of the layout.

First time here, very nice facility overall. Well stocked pro shop, multiple putting and chipping greens, nice looking range.

The greens putted & held approach shots well, medium fast. 99+% of the green(s) area was lush & looked great, it was odd that nearly every green had bare spots in a few areas... This seemed so out of place compared to the way the rest of the green(s) looked. The fairways and rough were both decent, but there were many divot marks. The same could be said for the tees, they obviously get alot of play here based on the divot marks. The traps were well maintained.

I liked the layout, not overly tight or too open, with lakes that come into play on at least half the holes. It is hilly but not overly hilly, you are constantly up/down moderate inclines that makes for few flat lies. Good mixture of straight and dogleg holes, long & short holes.

Customer service was a ++. Great value to walk before 8A @ $24. I will definitely be back.

I played here on 07/05/12 from the blue tees at 72.3/128/6682. My friend, who lives in Vancouver, had never played here so we thought we would give this Portland Parks and Recreation course a try. We played from the blues, we both had all the course that we could handle. I did not find that there were many birdie holes unless I was hitting great shots. Every hole was tree lined with water hazards in play on seven holes and high fescue on many others. The course features two completely different 9s and you better score well on the front because I think the back might be a good 2 to 3 strokes tougher. The first couple holes eased me into the round before the course became more challenging on holes #4 through #7. If a tee shot is positioned well on #1 and #3 then it is a short iron in and #2, a 150 yard par 3, drops a club so it is not the hardest start. Holes #4 and #5 require a little knowledge off the tee and are semi blind. Once you start the back it gets tough. Hole #10 is very tight and deceptively uphill while #11 is a well designed healthy length par 4. It requires a tee shot down the right and a solid long iron to avoid all the trouble left. The close is a very good test with #15 through #17 being some long holes. A bailout left off the tee on #15 (to avoid the hazard right) lengthens the dog leg right and #17 also plays deceptively up the hill. After all that the course closes on #18 in typical Pacific Northwest fashion requiring a laser off the tee to avoid all the trees. The greens were larger than average and had many slopes (many of my putts had big breaks) so this combined with all the trouble could lead to some slow play, and sure enough, we got around in a slow 5 hours on a weekday morning. My favorite part of this course was the collection of par 3s while my least favorite part was the routing of the holes. A wayward shot, if it didn’t end up in trouble, ended up near someone else’s hole. Plus, the 7th, a 621 yard uphill par 5 which played into the wind, had the water hazard in the wrong place. An out of place drive required laying up short of the hazard and still had 300+ yards into the green for the 3rd shot. The maintenance was good, my putts did not bump off line many times and the fairways were cut to a decent length, but the maintenance was not pristine. The views were lacking except from a couple holes and the course had a very urban feel to it. I thought it was a little over priced (not a huge surprise I guess since I think this side of Portland has some money) at $46 to ride on a weekday morning. I did not fall in love with the course, but I did not hate it either. I guess some more spacing between the holes and a more rural setting would have made it stand out to me.
