My brother and I played here this afternoon, $25 for the twilight rate with cart. We basically had the place to ourselves with one other single out ahead of us, but it was still slow going because it's cart path only and the course is extremely wet with a lot of squishy walks up and down all the hills!

The course looks nice and green with good coverage, but it's just so wet. They just didn't build the original drainage right for Southern Oregon winters and they haven't been able to maintain this place to the level it deserves. After a few days of rain, it was pretty soggy and sloppy throughout. The tee boxes were a bit shaggy. However, they weren't too wet and have a better sand base than the fairways/rough. The greens were also decent and not overly soft. Just a bit slow and fluffy since they probably can't mow often this time of year. The handful of bunkers that remain looked pretty much like wet concrete, so I was glad to avoid them.

I have a soft spot for this course. It's a fun target layout in a beautiful setting. I just can't endorse it during the winter when it's so wet and cold. If you are around here in the summer, give it a look. The city runs it now and it seems they have put some more work in, but there's only so much they can do without completely redoing the turf base to achieve better drainage for the area's wet winters. The 2nd hole is now permanently a par-3 and the signature 4th has forever moved its tees to the side, though you can still walk up to the top of the hill on "Lombard Street" if you want the original/best tee view. It also seems that hole 8 green was moved since last time I played. Still a fun and picturesque course. It just never became what they intended it to be when it was designed.

There was a slight break in the weather today (meaning just a steady drizzle instead of pouring rain), so I headed up to Salmon Run. I thought I might only play nine holes, so they charged $34 for that. Then, I decided to keep going and it was another $15 for the rest. I became accustomed to paying like $20-25 for this place in the winter so paying $49 seemed rather unpleasant. They should take whatever business they can get this winter. I did play through a twosome on the back nine, but otherwise I was the only one out there and I zipped through as quickly as I could. It was cart-path-only, which I expected. No way to drive the carts on the grass here right now. It was a sloppy wet mess out there. There was plenty of green grass, which looked nice from afar, but most shots were like hitting out of clam chowder. There's no way they can really maintain and mow the fairways or rough right now, so it is what it is. There are only a handful of sand traps left on this course and they are best avoided. They looked like crap. However, the greens were in surprisingly nice shape. They were very soft, but rolling rather smooth and quicker than I would have expected. This was a very pleasant surprise on an otherwise dreary day. I always enjoy Salmon Run for the nice setting and fun target layout. I feel like it keeps going downhill, though. Unfortunately, this area doesn't have the economy or serious golfer base to maintain the championship-level course this was meant to be. I'm glad it's still around, though, because I usually have fun there. Each time I play, there seems to be at least one new design alteration. Previously, I noted they permanently changed the signature "Lombard Street" hole #4 so that the upper/elevated tee box is no longer in use. The zig-zagging path the hole was named for is all grown over now, which is very sad, but it's still worth the hike for that iconic view. Now, they have altered the 2nd hole. It used to be a short and very funky little lay-up par-4. It is now a mid-length par-3 and I actually like this change. The new tee box area currently looks like a war zone as it takes shape amidst the heavy rains, but I think it was a good alteration in the long run because it wasn't a great hole before.

Played salmon run golf course, following a day of heavy rain. I was the only golfer I saw the entire round. The fairways were soggy, and the greens were recovering from being punched. I might have caught the course on its worst day. However, I loved the course. Probably the prettiest course I have ever played. It's a challenging layout. I really want to play it again in better conditions. Given the opportunity, if in southern Oregon, you would be well served to book a tee time. Staff was great.

Wouldn't be a trip back home without a visit to Salmon Run. You can read previous reviews for thoughts on the course and the challenging, yet fun target layout through the hills. I was sad to see that even in summer they are still playing the signature 4th hole on the alternate tees. Seems to be a permanent decision, which is a real bummer. But nothing prevents you from taking the exhausting hike up "Lombard Street" to tee it up from the true tee boxes and get a great golf view. They don't look to be mowing the upper boxes regularly, but you just kind of find a decent spot and let it rip!

The course was in OK condition, not the best I've seen it. The greens were pretty nice and mostly smooth, rolling at medium quick speeds with pretty firm surfaces as usual. The fairways were mostly good, but still some bad spots and a few real soggy/muddy areas (several right in front of greens). The rough was much spottier. Lush and deep in some areas and just patches of dirt in others. Things can get a bit wild if you are off the fairways here. Not many bunkers here and they use a couple different kinds of sands, but they looked to be okay. I didn't hit out of any of them. I would say conditions are overall below this course's standards, but you should never expect super pristine conditions here.

It was very cheap for us to play today with a GN hot deal time at 12:30 for $10. That was just for walking rate pre-paid and I have no desire to walk this course. It's a hilly beast with a lot of space in between holes, as well. We paid an extra $14 each for a cart, but still for $24 it was an awesome deal when other people were walking out and paying $50. Not too many people out there on a Wednesday afternoon, so me and my brother teed off early and were done about 3 hours later. Always love coming here, partly for sentimental reasons, partly to support the course's continued existence and partly because I enjoy the layout, even though it kicks my butt almost every time.
