Played a free Makeup Round with free range balls given to us by the GM John as a result of our review from last visit. It was a more than generous apology and a great excuse to get back out to La Mirada - the perfect course for a 13-20 handicapper.

We teed off on-time for La Mirada which meant only 20-25 minutes late and finished in around 5 hours I think. The combination of flooding and drying out means that the course in currently in only fair shape. Tee boxes were a bit chewed up, fairways were tightly mown and hard. Areas where the grass drown in pools were sanded dirt. Course had been cleaned up a lot from before but still a couple of fallen trees impeded progress of terribly executed drives. Greens accepted shots well but rolled faster and more subtle than our group could cope with. There was also lush areas and a sense that in a couple of month this place will be in much better shape.

All that put aside, I have and always have had only two actual complaints about La Mirada. It's too far off any freeway and (despite the first problem) it's too popular. The more surprising that we were given a free round because La Mirada doesn't need our business. It's got plenty. With the rest on the golfers that go there, I too will put up with the drive, the time issues and any dips in conditions to enjoy a round there at a fair price. So please, stop going there so often - so I can go in your place.......

Made it back to La Mirada on Saturday with three friends on the very generous invitation from the GM after a time-related issue on our last visit (see last review). John, the GM, was incredibly gracious and invited us back out for a chance to play the course again. That's pretty exceptional customer service and genuinely shows that not only do some golf courses pay attention to what the GK community is saying, but also strive to show how much they care about their business.

But in all honesty, despite the late start on the last visit, I have still never come away from La Mirada without really enjoying myself from 1-18. Saturday was no different, however my game was so poor that it really put it to the test! But the course itself is incredibly fun and has all sorts of twists and turns that push it beyond your standard LA Muni experience.

Currently though, La Mirada suffers from the same things that many LA courses are dealing with these weeks - ridiculous expectations. It rained a bunch so everything must look like Augusta! Well, so far, I've not seen that exact phenomenon anywhere. Sure, many fairways are greener than usual, but that doesn't mean that every LA course is perfect right now - La Mirada is no different, but it's extremely playable.

While the fairways are in good shape overall, they are playing very firm currently. It makes chipping quite the adventure if you're not absolutely perfect. The rough is actually in great shape - very easy to hit out of right now and definitely better for chipping from off the green than the fairways in many cases. Bunkers are in very solid shape. The tee boxes are reflective of the amount of traffic this place gets - a lot. The traffic is merely a reflection of this very fun course being so popular, and all at a good price.

The greens were ridiculously fast and firm - not what anyone in our group was expecting. Never really got a hold of the speed all day, and there are very subtle breaks on the rather small greens around La Mirada. The greens themselves are in pretty nice shape, but on a few holes there are a few rough edges, but nothing that I don't think will be in much better condition in a few weeks when all the storm damage subsides.

So overall, another great day at one of my favorite LA courses. Yes, it's going to be crowded and you can definitely expect to have a full day out there, but despite the rather long POP on the day, it goes by quickly when playing with some good friends and a quality loop that just makes golf fun - except when you fail to hit a single fairway all day! Thanks to La Mirada for the excellent customer service and we will certainly be back in the near future.

I really do enjoy this course a lot, and I think I would play it more often if it was more freeway convenient, and of course if they didn't make you start 45 mins after your tee time is scheduled. Played with Kassper7 and another buddy on Saturday, and apparently so did everyone else in the city because it was a pretty big mess out there in terms of organization and POP. When you have an 11:40 tee time and don't finish more than 16 holes, that's a problem.

But I also respect that with all the rains before and all the rains expected after, everyone wanted to fit in 18 the only spot they could. I'm trying to keep that in mind as the review for the course itself is most favorable.

Again, really find this to be a fun layout. The recent rains have the course very green, but of course any low areas or depressions have a lot of standing water to deal with. Everywhere else the course drained better than expected. The sand in the bunkers was nice and fluffy, and the greens were in nice shape - not exceptionally fast or tricky, but consistent and medium speed. The rough varied around the course with some areas still slightly dried out and others quite lush and sticky.

I look forward to getting back to this place again when the organization matches the fun of the course itself. Spring should be very nice here.

Quick quiz! How many hours after my Saturday 11:40 tee time did I begin my second nine at La Mirada? 2? not quite... 3? I wish... try 4HOURS!!!! Unforgivable - it had never occurred to me that I might not finish my round due to light when I drove into the parking lot, but here I was at the 16th green, putting in the dark and calling it a long ass day.

When we complained that we weren't able to tee off until 45 minutes after our tee time - we were provided vouchers for a free meal and drink at the snack bar. Would have rather been able to play two more holes or be charged twilight rates instead but it was better than nothing.

The course was nicely green and in pretty good shape considering the rain we've had. All off the "U" shaped holes were pretty soggy in the bottom on the swale. There was standing water around, sitting water and even water laying in a pool just off the green on 7 - put playable areas were all nearby. Hole 6 did have a swamp all along the left rough that needed to be drained but even if someone promised to do it - I wouldn't believe them. Hole 16 must be in charge of water drainage for the nearby neighborhood because it looked like a glacier had moved through with piles of debris containing rocks the size of oranges scattered about. Didn't notice any pools in bunkers and the greens rolled as well as I could have imagined.

I like this course - I feel like the layout rewards good shots and punishes bad shots but not overly. I think the variety of holes is nice for a sub 120 slope course. But I don't get why La Mirada consistently can't get it's act together on providing a positive experience for those who pay good money to play there.

Didn't rate the course based on this. Everything else, condition-wise, is average, with the exception of the bunkers, which have great new white sand in them. $44.99 rate today included golf, cart, range balls, any entree, and a beer. Wish they mentioned the greens when I booked the time.

Hadn't played La Mirada since they finished the course facelift and so I gave it a go early morning on 09/18/16. The course was packed as usual and the poor guy in the pro shop looked ready to break something since the computers were having major issues which prevented him from being able to check people in. Props to him though, because he managed really well somehow. He was getting the pre-light folks to get their "balls in the air" so there wasn't any back-up. And he also slapped together a makeshift 3-some of singles (including me) b/c some guys were having a fit about their groups being made into a 5-some.

Note, imo ppl absolutely don't need to b$tch & moan at the poor pro shop guy/starter over a 5-some. Every county course/muni in so cal slaps together 5s on weekends, deal with it. Besides, it's not his choice, it's course policy. If a 5-some bothers you so much...go join a country club or play a non-muni. Sorry, rant over.

On this particular day, getting put together as an on the fly 3-some saved the round b/c the guys who we were individually supposed to get paired with (a group with two different 4-somes) were slower than a mofo (must've been gambling b/c from what I saw on the range, they had game). We completely lost sight of them after about 3 holes and my guess is they were prob at least 3 holes back by the time we finished our round. I pity whoever was behind these guys.

Course condition-wise, the greens were pretty nice and I do really like all the work they put into the re-vamp, especially the bunkers (luckily didn't end up in any but it's obvious from the sparkling white new sand that it's a major upgrade from before). My only real complaint is that the fairways had waaaaaay too many bare/thin patches. I've seen better grass at chewed up driving ranges to be honest.

That being said, I still had a fun round and will be back again. The course isn't long but it still presents enough challenge to make it interesting and the price is great when you walk. The walk is on the tougher side but still manageable.

Played 9/3 at 715 in a threesome. Greens rolled pretty well and the pace of play was solid for a Saturday morning. Pro shop had the place teeing off quickly and efficiently and the $1 tacos at the clubhouse were solid!

All in all a fun day and coming back as the course was fun!

Walked on this morning and was sent right to the first tee. Renovations are complete on the course and all greens are open. They are rebuilding one of the putting greens. Course is in playable shape but a lot of areas are thin due to the construction traffic. Tee boxes had good coverage but the tee markers were bunched together on a couple holes and need to be moved. Fairways and rough are thin but coming back. Sand is very nice and demands your attention when trying to get out, only problem is that people were not raking the traps and was in two different foot craters left by someone.
Good news is that this is the best I have seen the greens. Very little ball marks and good coverage, rolling a little on the slow side but putting smooth and true.
