Brookside just opened up on 5/8 so our regular group got two early times on Sunday to accommodate 8 of us – 7:01 and 7:11. It had been 8 weeks since I last played and was a bit reluctant to do so but everyone was so gung ho to play, I decided to give it a go. As Abbacat indicated in her review of course #2, covid 19 precautions are well in place. Masks are required for common areas/when you pay but not when on the course. We walked and kept our masks on anyway. If you don’t have a mask, you can buy one there for a $1.00. Credit card only for green fees. Range is open however but the practice putting green is not. POP was just under 4 hours. Course conditions were good but I guess was expecting more. There were a lot of browned out areas and areas that were green were really thick. Not much roll out with this thick kikuyu. Rough wasn’t too thick, about like it always is. Bunkers were in good shape. No rakes so tried my best to smooth them over with my feet. The greens were in good shape. Smooth but just not running very fast. Medium speed at best. Not a lot of ball marks which was expected and nice to see. IMO, Brookside #1 is still a beast and will play a lot longer when the kikuyu is thick and not cut. I’ll give it a thumbs up however and for $44 on weekends to walk, it’s definitely worth the play.

Played in a tourney on Sunday, November 3. We were started late. The front took easily over 2.5 hours but we ended up with a POP of less than 5 hours. So it definitely sped up on the back nine. Good customer service from the starter, okay service at the walk-up counter in the coffee shop.

I have not played Brookside the day after a UCLA football game. Maybe because of UCLA's dismal attendance this year, the course did not show much sign of being used as a parking lot the previous day. They were still removing port o potties and some other equipment but that was the only sign I saw of the event. Despite that, the course was in okay but not what I would consider good condition.

I was in quite a few bare spots in the fairway. Possibly because I could not hit an iron straight I was in the greenside rough quite a bit and there was plenty of hard pan there also. The sand traps were the worst conditions. I was in one that might have been a fairway bunker and might have been greenside (maybe 15 yards from the green) that had no sand. I could see the liner material poking out of that and a greenside bunker I was in. Just not good sand coverage.

The greens were excellent. Rolling with good quickness and smoothly. Generally greenside rough near the green was pretty thick. I was in one area that looked like it was sod that had been put in a couple of months before that had good coverage.

So, it was a mixed bag. It is a good test of your golf game (although the white tees we played took some of the teeth out of the course). There are some fun holes. I have seen the conditions better though.

Played the Koiner Course #1 Saturday 8/17 with a friend and a 5:56am tee time. Pace of play wasnt bad at 4 hours. We got paired with a 3some for a group of 5. After hole 9 the three some broke off and played ahead of us since they were playing super fast and gimmies on the green..... Staff was friendly and courteous. Never saw a cart girl but it was 10 am when we finished.
Greens- Great shape held balls well and rolled true
Fairways- green and 90% coverage on them.
Sand Traps- Great coverage and sand must have been new. Great fluff. I was in 1 trap and my friend was in 4.
Tee Boxes- for the most part were level and had coverage on them. A couple of the par 3's showed some damage but not too bad
Rough- This was the worst part of the course- spotty grass and weeds and uneven. Definitely dont want to be in the rough on this course.
Water- 2 holes with water and water was clean and clear and did not smell.

Got a Memorial Day deal late on Saturday for a holiday round at Brookside #1 - returning for the first time since my only time way back in 2014. I did not remember much about this long and challenging course, but I knew it was going to be a rough day out if the clubs weren't along for the ride. We played from the blue tees with cart for $49 each with a 7:05am tee time. The much anticipated holiday on-course gridlock fortunately never developed. My threesome was paired with a very cool duo of brothers and the five of us had a pretty great day with the sun shining finally and beautiful course conditions from tee to green. We never waited on a single hole after the first two or three so it was fantastic in that regard. Greens were in great shape and running as fast and true as I have seen any LA Muni tracks in quite some time. Shots held up well for the early part of the day, but some of the later greens had some ball mark damage after softening up and getting pelted all morning. But overall, really in great shape. I was surprised as well at how nice and lush the fairways were out there. Just a shade below solid private country club level, but still so rewarding to hit from all day. Rough was not too penal at all and the tee boxes and bunkers were also in good shape. It was tough in the bunkers early since they were still a little wet after yesterday's rains. This course is a beast if you're not pounding 280-300 yard drives down the middle all day. There are only three par 3s and three par 5s on this 18, and many of the par 4s are in the 470-500 yard range with narrow landing areas between healthy rows of trees. You also have a few holes with water to deal with and the ever-present concrete gully that borders many of the holes and presents a hazard to cross on a few others, like the risk-reward par 4 10th to start the back nine. Great to get back out to Pasadena and it makes me wonder why it took so long to get back out there. I was generally scared of the stories regarding POP and the parking lot effect after Rose Bowl games, but none of that was an issue today and it was a joy to play there. I will go back much sooner this time for sure.

Rode the blues this am 7:30 am tee time, POP 5 hours, this was due to the shotgun tournament I played in with other Tiger Woods wanna bes. Course was in good shape, tee boxes cut and level, fairways semi lush, some thin areas, traps were very good. In fact they were being turned at 7:30. The greens were absolutely phenomenal, held shots, no gimmicks like crazy undulations, rolled true. I highly recommend it especially for the golfzing weekday rate of $24.

Morning tee time on Tuesday on Brookside #1. Check in and first tee were well organized. Course is very green and in good shape. Fairways and rough had good coverage and tee boxes were level and filled in. Bunkers were a little crusty and difficult to judge how much sand was under the ball. Greens were in very good shape with very few unfixed divots. Surfaces were smooth and medium fast. If you are above the hole or have a putt with any break really have to watch your speed (had my share of three putts).
Played as a fivesome in between two speedy foursomes which kept us on our toes trying to keep up. Too bad they use some of the fairways for parking for the Rose Bowl. POP was around 4.5 hours. Very nice area

Based on the most recent review, decided to get back out to Pasadena and play Brookside. I had concerns about being able to get out early, but to my surprise it was not that bad. However, when I made the turn, there was quite a bit of back nine play, so things really slowed down a lot. But the weather was great, so just resigned myself to enjoy the morning and wonderful setting.

Course is actually in good overall condition, particularly the greens. They rolled faster than they looked ! Bunkers nice as well. Some areas in the fairways could use attention, but still playable.

Always enjoy Brookside #1. Several of the par four holes are now too long for me to reach in regulation, but that's becoming more and more common everywhere I play now. (Maybe it's time to re-think which tees I play ) Bottom line is that it was a fun enjoyable round, and with the senior discount, well worth the $$.

Was invited by some friends to play Brookside on 10/19. The traffic from my house getting there is always a challenge for a morning tee time–an hour and 15 minutes but it has been a while since I have played here so I was really looking forward to it. Had a 9:00 am tee time and got off pretty much on time. The place was packed. Activity everywhere. UCLA was playing Arizona at the Rose Bowl the next night so you can see they were getting prepared for the event. In fact my friends who I played with, work for the Rose Bowl and after our round, they had to set up near the 10th green an area for Arizona tail gaiting. We started out on the back 9 and I found the course in just ok condition. Know that when there is a football game or concert, they use the fairways as overflow parking and it shows. Many bare spots out there. That’s the way it is this time of year. The rough was beat up kikuyu. The bunkers were in really good condition. Good, firm sand. The tee boxes were recently aerated so they will need some time to recover. The pace moved along just fine. We didn’t wait on anyone so it was just under 4 hours. The greens were in good shape however. Sneaky fast. I say that because they didn’t appear to be cut down but yet they rolled very nice. No complaints about the greens. Played the blues and found it to be a real challenge. Long! The blues played around 6800 yds. and it seemed longer as the wind picked up. Brookside #1 is a fun course to play. Really nice setting with the Rose Bowl right next door. I have seen Brookside in much better condition but always recommend playing here. Just know that some of fairways won’t be at their best.

Played Sunday 9/16 8:36 tee time $56 on Golfzing. POP 5:40. Tee boxes are level with good coverage, not too much divot damage. Fairways and the rough are below average. The front 9 is a little more lush than the back 9 but overall many bare spots and extremely thin areas where the drives end up. We played winter rules in the back 9, from the rough also. The greens were above average, not too soft or hard. Well struck balls, even with long irons and woods held the green. Smooth with not too many ball marks. Consistent speed from green to green. 8 on the stimp. Bunkers, I was in a lot of them today and all of them had good amount of sand. I used to play Brookside a lot but haven't played in over a year. It looks like they did a lot of turf reduction. The rough grass between the holes are completely gone, just dirt now, more than i remember. I still recommend playing here because the greens were so nice.
