Greens were punched/sanded about 10 days ago, medium speed and bumpy. I rarely have any complaints here, but felt the need to call the pro shop this week when I found out my out of state guest was cha... Continue »

Front 9 greens were punched/sanded last week, medium speed and bumpy. Back 9 greens have not yet been punched, normal medium fast/smooth. Which creates a whole new experience when you make the turn. F... Continue »

Short par 4. Length is not a priority unless you are really long and want a very risk/reward tee shot over the trees right toward the green. Driving range OB left, desert lost ball right, so get it in the fairway. The diagional green is firm and runs away from you. So even a very lofted wedge into the green is not going to stick, count on 1 club of rollout. Carrying your approach to the front of the green will usually reach a back pin and you almost have to land short of the green to get close to a front pin. The putts break more severely than most play toward the driving range. Do not miss your approach short left, very difficult up/down par from down there. Balls that land long/right on the actual green very likely end up in the cactus right/behind the green. Short/right is your miss. This hole looks like a birdie hole, with the severe green it is not. Get a 4, move on and be happy!

Difficult par 5. Wide fairway but OB left and trees right make getting it in play off the tee important. 2nd shot you either have to lay up short of the waste bunker that you cannot see from your tee shot that is app. 50 yards wide or safely get over it... you do not want to be down there playing a 100-140 yard shot up to an elevated green you cannot see well guarded by bunkers front/left. The miss on the approach shot is short or right, not left or long. #8 Mountain green is one of the most severe on either Ventana course. Large hump middle right that produces huge breaking chips/putts you cannot stop even close to pins around the bottom of the hump on the other side. Aiming at the middle of the green regardless of where the pin is on many approach shots is the prudent play IMO.
