Fairways and tee boxes were punched and sanded today. Seemed like greens may have been punched or sanded a few weeks ago, still a lot of sand on the greens.

Haven’t played this course in a few years and was a little let down to see the conditions have deteriorated a bit. It’s been raining a lot so I’ll give them some slack for trying to keep things in shape, but showing up to punched fairways was a surprise. Hopefully by next month things will recover and it will be the nice beautiful fairways I remember. In addition, there was a ton of heavy construction going on, as another reviewer mentioned, it looks like it’s soon to be full of new homes on the course.

Aside from all the negatives, the course layout is still excellent, with a nice variety of short and long holes to keep it interesting. The greens were tough as always, and avoiding 3 putts was the main challenge. Range was mats, practice balls were new, facilities were great. Come back in a month and hopefully it will have improved conditions.

I used to avoid this track on weekends and holidays, now due to the construction, it's the only time I play here. Played Thursday afternoon when a buddy informed me that construction was being stopped for the extended weekend. My guess as a way to draw in more AT&T fans. What was once a go to (and home course0 in the peninsula, is now becoming an average muni (at best). Currently the greens are super firm and fast (even more so than normal). I played Coyote Creek the day before and their greens were firm and fast but fair. BlackHorse is just comical right now.

Fairways were ok. They always present tight lies, so as long as you're good with that you wont be disappointed. Fairways had adequate coverage throughout the course. rest of the course (tee boxes, bunkers, rough) were all ok. nothing exciting, but nothing to complain about.

Of course the real disappointment is all the construction of the new homes going in around the course. Houses, are just being built around the perimeter of the course, they are all smack in the middle. As in cart paths are being re-routed to go around houses. Once the houses are built just about all of the ocean views will be gone. It will be interesting to see what type of golfer they attract once that happens. Especially if conditions continue to slip.

For now. If you are like me and play on holidays or weekends when the construction is halted, it's ok. But I wouldn't play with all the earth movers and construction going on during the week.

Using the Troon card and my alarm was able to get Blackhorse late Am Saturday and Bayonet early Sunday. An attractive rate and great weather (the majority of both rounds shorts and short sleeves) I had the best weekend of 36 holes this year.
Agree with the previous review on the course conditions, but not completely with the opinions.
Some experience playing certainly will help. And if you are hitting it to the wrong area you will pay the price here more than most tracks.
Tees ok most over-seeded, all level from the whites. Rough manageable 3" + - . Fairways good not great some imperfections I played it down and caught a few challenging lies against green grass sitting on brown. Approach shots unless a mile high dropping straight took a bounce that must be calculated for. Pitch shots with the second bounce spin will check but the player must be in position for that type of shot. Flop shots ineffective for the most part. Bunkers firm and kept up nicely. Really nice to look at with the contouring shapes. One partner observed they resemble the canopy top of the cypress trees.
More than like playing here. Today with three others new to the course is was fun being tour guide in great weather. Albeit slow play (5+ hrs) following small group events. The views and the company eliminated the need for musical distractions. Beer cart ice cold.

Played Tues Oct 18, 7:50 tee time; cold morning that warmed up by hole 7. I've always felt these courses are decent tracks with gimmicky greens. You need to play here regularly to learn the course and score well. So much course management and shot placement needed. So if you play here once every 3-7 years, like me, it's not fun hitting good shots into bad places. Add to that: like the last review noted, this course is not being kept up. In our outing of 20 guys, if I knew the conditions of the fairways, I would've proposed lift,clean,place. Lots of bare and spotty parts in the fairway. Greens were diabolical, and seemed inconsistent.. at least I couldn't figure out if it was me, the grain, or the greenskeeping. My guess is the Bayonet side is more popular and regarded, so it's in better shape. They were doing a college tournament there at the same time, so that's my bet. Anyways, not a horrible day. Drink cart girl was nice and came around a bunch. Food in the restaurant was great. Had a good time. But rather play Poppy.

I played Blackhorse on Monday with SDF in his first round back after a layoff due to injury. I have to say, I'm disappointed with the conditions. It's such a fun layout but conditions are starting to slip. Greens were rock hard. Not a chance getting a ball to stop. Fairways are thin at best. Gophers and grounds squirrels have completely taken over the place. Maintenance crews have done a great job keeping the fairways rodent free but be careful looking for stray balls. The outer edges are littered with holes. Sand traps are average.

For the troon rate mid week it's still worth it. For rack rate on the weekend... For get about it.

I also played the Bayonet/ Black Horse golf course back in 2017. I recall it was not in great condition
... but this year for our yearly tournament, it was really nice.

I think perhaps it was even nicer than I remembered it because I played particularly well on Saturday the 14th... and I hit every drive down the middle.

I shot 49-50=99 while the other three guys in my foursome shot 111, 112, and 113, respectively!

The greens were ultra fast. That must be a Pebble Beach Resort hallmark... lightning fast putting surfaces!

A few scattered un-filled divots in what was otherwise a perfect set of fairways...

Really a fun track. The windy conditions made it crazy and fun!

Played Black Horse on Easter Sunday with an 8am tee time. The main reason for playing here was I wanted to get some practice on firm greens for an upcoming tournament down south which according to a recent review will be on firm greens (thank you Weber2323). As much as I love the layout of Blackhorse, the conditions just don’t match the price tag right now. They are charging a premium price ($150 on weekends) yet the conditions are average.

A couple of the greens were heavily diseased to the point that there were large areas of pure dirt. Whereas on two of them they kept the cup away from the bad area, on one hole the pin was only a couple feet away and you pretty much had to negotiate the dirt area on your putt. The rest of the greens rolled smooth and fast. Firm as always, but predictable. Some of the pin locations were very friendly on Sunday which tamed the nasty undulations.

Fairways were thin and presented a tight lie as usual. However, there seems to be two different types of grass on the fairways and occasionally you would have a tuft of grass interfering with clean contact. Chipping on the tight lies is a challenge! And I’ll leave it at that!

Tee boxes were all fine. Level and ample coverage. About half a dozen tee boxes were closed off to let them fully recover from overseeding. Some of the markers were moved up and others back which I’m good with in order to get some clean, level, lush tee boxes down the road.

I was in two bunkers and the first was surprisingly thin. The second was ok at best. Being that the bunkers in the valley were in decent shape, I was disappointed with the bunkers overall at Blackhorse.

POP wasn’t an issue. I ditched my paring partners on the first tee when we were already a hole behind while they were getting their act together. I got around the group ahead on the 7th hole and had clear sailing, taking my time often hitting extra shots here and there to work on my game.

Driving range was on perfect new grass with excellent lush hitting surface. The fairways need to be the same as the driving range! The views of the ocean and the layout of the track are awesome. The conditions not so much right now. There’s a big difference in price between weekday (Mon-Wed) vs the rest of the week(end). I’ll be back because A) I love the layout and B) it’s close to my house. I’ll just reserve my play here for the weekdays. Also of note. The housing construction is going on around the Bayonet course so Blackhorse is still house free.

Played Monday AM in the high wind. The nice thing about Black Horse is most of the holes go North/South to the wind so you don't have to deal with too much cross wind. Hole 9 being the worst. Range has been on mats for a while now. Not sure if that's just a Monday thing to let the grass recover after a packed weekend or not. Also, the practice bunkers now have a decent amount of sand in them. For a while they were very very thin.

Greens remain firm and fast. They roll true and with the sever undulations (as mentioned before) the breaks are easy to identify but hard to control. Interestingly there were some tough pin placements, that somehow because they were so tucked in took some of the nasty undulations out play by forcing you to hit it so hard past them.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, there seems to be two types of grass growing on the fairways. As long as you are on one or the other it's all good. Get in between the two and it gets a little dicey but still manageable. First cut was decent and predictable.

Tee boxes were all level with good coverage. I was in two bunkers, one was ok but a bit thin, the other was very nice.

Pace of play started off slow and I joined up with another single who was "taking his time". We waited on most shots and then after the turn the course opened up. I had time to kill so I remained back with the other gentleman and we finished in 3.5 hours. Probably could have knocked that down to 3 if I had wanted.

Customer service is getting better and better. It's always been decent but now seems to be a little better. No bag service during the week which I miss. Actually, I'm not sure if they brought back the bag/ club cleaning service back after COVID.

Course offers a number of views of the ocean (white cap views yesterday) and has a bunch of elevation changes throughout the track to make it fun.

Restaurant overlooks the putting green and ocean for a nice setting. Food is good. Nothing spectacular but nothing to regret afterwards.

Planed a two day golf trip to play Bayonet and Black Horse. I was able to book a $79 prepaid rate for each course on Golf Now two months out. Played Black Horse on Wednesday, 10/6, teeing off at 9:40 and finishing in 4 hours. The greens were in very good condition. The greens rolled smooth and toward the fast side especially when putting down hill. Medium to longer shots tend to release a little. The fairways have a mix of two grasses so some spots were green and lush while others were slightly brown and thin but playable. Although the patchy contrasting grass colors were not aesthetically pleasing the fairways played better than they looked. The rough had good coverage with medium height that affected shots but was not overly penal. Some areas between fairways had wood chips spread which can make for some interesting lies. The tee boxes were mostly flat with decent coverage. The bunkers in the fairways were well groomed and played firm. The greenside bunkers were thin of sand and had little pebbles throughout. A least the last USGA rules revision allows for removing the surface pebbles from behind the ball. Bayonet plays narrower off the tee compared to Black Horse but the green complexes on Black Horse are more difficult (greens have more undulation and more greenside bunkers). The carts do not have GPS so purchasing the $10 yardage book (which includes both courses) was a great help in navigating the large number of fairway bunkers on both courses. After playing both courses for the first time I like the layout of Bayonet slightly over Black Horse. The conditions of both courses mirrored each other except for the greenside bunkers on Black Horse which were thin of sand. Both are good tracks with plenty of up and down terrain. All the staff I encountered were very friendly.
