Always looked forward to playing this great couse in the foothills. Very nice people at check-in and starter ...after that it was downhill... Tee boxes in very bad shape, fairways O.K. but the greens were the WORSE.. does anybody fix a ball mark on this course?? Looks overall that the course is still suffering financially; did not see one groundsperson out on the course. The good reputation did not fit the shape of the golf course. Disappointed....

Played 12/22, frost delay caused 11 a.m shotgun. Walked on with 3-some at 1 pm and nearly finished 18 holes! Greens wonderful. Under new management so maybe traps will be sanded. Best location in CA... Continue »

As I've said before, Darkhorse should be in better shape for the high-end price and setting. I guess they're having some financial issues, so maybe that's reflected in the course conditioning. Greens ... Continue »

As I've said before, Darkhorse should be in better shape for the high-end price and setting. I guess they're having some financial issues, so maybe that's reflected in the course conditioning. Greens were oddly soft and slowish compared to what I'm used to at Darkhorse. The sand wasn't so good, and I got a horrible lie in one because they weren't raked. Still, it's my favorite course around here.

Not too bad of shape for middle of winter. Plenty of sogginess, but that's to be expected after the rains we've had already.

Pretty smooth greens, but very soft and receptive to any shot. Fairways are ok, a lot of divots, but pretty consistant grass. Wet bunkers, not crazy thick rough.

I played in the midst of the Jack Frost tournament, so it was VERY slow, but that's to be expected in this case. Always friendly staff, and the best hot dog in town at the turn.

This course is a very nice layout/design. Sadly the maintenance has not kept up with the quality of design. Problems are as follows: shabby practice area and no range balls are included in the rather steep greens fee, I commonly came accross areas of very thin grass in the fairways and could see more in the rough, all the bunkers are completely unkept with grass growing down in the sand and sand working its way out in all directions plus they don't seem to drain well because after an overnight sprinkle the low parts of the traps were still wet late into the next afternoon, finnaly many of the tee boxes were overgrown with weedgrass. The one major positive is that the greens are great; soft, smooth and fairly quick. They seem to hold a line fairly well so there are very few put that have a major break to them. Consideration has to be given to the pase of play, on a Friday afternoon we only saw two other groups and got done in 3.5 hours.

(Seems to be the norm in the Sacramento area courses I've played on my trip north) Love the layout - tough but fair! The staff was great, even offered to print out an e-mail discount coupon for early twilight fees.

unbelievable website...was the end of "wow"....drove into parking lot to scorching heat/no shade....bag drop was 'self serve'....no drop off...just bring your clubs up and drop them off....the 'assistants' have never done this job before, had no idea how to greet the customers, offered no help as to where you were supposed to go...etc. the carts were without the advertised gps, the clubhouse was a trailer....you get the picture. if you have visited the website, you were expecting a first class high end golf course operation and it was anything but....the grass range was fair at best....two flags stuck out in middle of unkept lawn w/out any yardage guide....the putting green was very nice and very much like the greens on the course...the course may be some players idea of a good time but playing it for the first time i found it quite unfair in many instances...we played the copper tees and were constantly trying to decide how far it was to a bunker or dogleg off the tee and we were wrong almost every time...the risk reward was very severe and if you missed a shot you were almost always assured of bogey or worse....the rough was very thick and penalized every stray drive (even a few feet off fairway)...the greens were unbelievably nice....except that they were HUGE! a 65' putt was not out of the ordinary on any hole... they were very soft (wet from constant rewatering)...held any good shot very well, and were very fast and very true...some ball marks from shoddy repair jobs but they were the best part of the course....With apologies to STICKMAN we found Darkhorse a major disappointment and won't be back any time soon....there are much nicer places to spend your money...
