course #1 is currently aerating. Due to the sand and holes, greens are slow and dont break as much. Saw many bare spots, ground under repair, and roped off areas around the course. Course is in the poorest shape that i have seen in a while. NOT worth the regular green fee price, but super twilight price is a deal.

Those greens were as good as I have ever seen them, I don't know if it was because it a was the PLGA Tournet of champions but they rolled nice, fast and pure. Doesn't mean that I made puts cause I din't, but they were tour style. 1 or 2 ball mark per green, nice fairways and rough. sand was a little thin and hard. Overall condition was owesome. Long course with challenge and potential trouble all over the place.

Played yesterday. First the good, the greens were generally in fairly nice condition, and ran medium to fast. The bad? Fairways area mess, bald and muddy in many spots, or very thin. Winter rules are a must on these babies. Hopeful it's all due to the recent weather, and with better weather, they'll get better, but right now it's not pretty. Tee boxes and bunkers were average by muni standards. We got out early and finished in a little over 4, but it doesn't seem like anyone is out monitoring play, so I'd be concerned about pace of play if I was teeing it up later. Right now at $60 to walk on the wkend, this doesn't seem like a great value with these conditions.

Haven't played Brookside 1 in a while - overall, typical muni conditions:
Pace of play slowish at 4.45 walking on a weekday, but that's not bad for here.
Greens - they have actually been trying to do something about the encroaching kikuya (as well as tackling it on course 2). The fall aeration helped to knock it down somewhat, and some of the greens on both courses have been edged to help keep it out. Pace of the greens was fairly fast, but they were depressingly bumpy as usual, so nothing held its line - making putts of any distance was not easy.
Tee boxes (played the golds) were generally good, although one or two of them were extremely lumpy in spots.
Sand - nice and fluffy and thick, so good marks there.
Fairways - both course one and two are sprouting some nice fresh growth in spots, promoting fluffy, commendable lies. Unlike the old turf, the blades of grass on this new growth are nice and thin, so it supports the ball without feeling like a sponge or mattress. A few spots roped off and a few bare lies, but all in all good condition.

Below average muni conditions. The best part of the course were the bunkers - nice and fluffy. Tee boxes were decent.

Below average muni conditions. The best part of the course were the bunkers - nice and fluffy. Tee boxes were decent.

A lot of the staked areas on the fairways were now back in play but they have resodded those parts and it hasn't taken yet, so you might get some real spongy kikuya lies. Still one or two GUR's and the usual burnt out areas typical for this time of year.

Big problem remains the greens, all of which have some significant (at times chronic) infestation of the surrounding kikuya, which appears as darker patches throughout and is quite visible up close as thicker, burnt blades of grass all throughout the bent.

It affects the speed on putts and worse is the wavering and swerving it causes to the ball. Hard to make any decent rolls on this and considering the green fee it just isn't worth it. Should cost about the same as surrounding munis (Griffith Park, Santa Anita etc.) but it's about 50% more.

Only positive about the price is it kept people away on the Labor Day holiday weekend so I got round in 3 hours walking the golds. I think I was the only person on the back nine at one point. If only the greens were halfway decent........

Played Brookside #1 last Saturday and were very disappointed. The fairways are in TERRIBLE condition...roped off, soggy, ground under repair on just about every hole. Staff was indifferent when we complained. We paid a lot of money to play here and in the past have found it to be a great course, worth the drive and the cost. NOT this time. Be advised, lousy conditions.

I think they have a real problem here with the greens. Granted it was the weekend and it didn't look like they had cut them in a few and this probably magnified things. But the advertised bent grass has been significantly invaded by the surrounding kikuyu, so that putts actually change sound as they roll through the gnarlier, wide blades of the kikuyu which show up all over as darker green patches - you can quite clearly hear the ball hissing through it. Putts slow down significantly and roll off line as a result.

In some places some long kikuyu runners were sprouting on the surface of the greens - fancy running a birdie putt over a six + inch blade of grass? Not easy to see a way out of this. Just look at the colors on the practice green if you want an illustration.....

start time (at) 8am. 4.5 hr. round, a little slow for the time of the day. The greens were in good shape, faster than how it looked. Well worth the green fee. Will be returning again soon.
