I played Brookside #1 on Sunday morning, 8/14 for $75 which included a cart. The course was not terribly interesting and lacked holes with any sort of wow factor. It was a flat course and very walkable. The course and surrounding areas had lots going on. The swap meet at the Rose Bowl and lots of people walking around the course were somewhat distracting. Nevertheless, the layout was solid, with lots of mature trees and it was fairly well conditioned. The fringes and fairways leading to the greens were spongy....carry your pitches to the green. The staff was very nice and friendly but the course wasn't worth the $75 green fee.

Greens rolling well enough for a muni - medium-ish speed. But there's lots of kikuya infestation throughout.

Greens rolling well enough for a muni - medium-ish speed. But there's lots of kikuya infestation throughout.

Fairways were recently aerated but are almost back - a few were roped off but they'll be very lush soon, I expect. Rough is healthy and gets your attention but not too penal. Tee boxes a bit scruffy but not too big a deal. Sand quality was good.

Still slow even at 5.50 am - around 4.30 for 18.

I guess it was just those greens. Other greens didnt have holes in them. The practice green does. Seems like they are healing fast though. Overall, the course is typical muni conditions.

If you want to play nine holes before you go to work(in my case 9 holes before 18 holes, empire lakes in afternoon) this is the place to go.If you dont mind the noise of the greenskeeper, you'll have fun. You tee off the back nine and finish 9 holes in about 1-2 hours. Saw them punching holes on the greens, but not sure if they are putting sand on them. They aerated about a month ago, so it was a surprise seeing them aerate again. I guess they werent happy how the greens were. Overall the course conditions are typical muni.

Played today, 4 hrs. Course is in good shepe after the soccer game (surpries). No greens, t-boxes or sand traps were driver over or through like the last time and very few broken bottles.

Played here on 6-9-2011. Tee'd off at around 2 on a Thursday afternoon. Were supposed to tee off earlier but some jerks only paid as two and sent out four taking our spot and the girl at the counter said it was too late for her to do anything. Anyways, the pace of play was absolutely terrible. Finished just after 8, playing as two. There wasn't even any backups but that was probably because we were taking our time on each hole and green.

As far as course conditions, the course was in pretty good shape. Some of the teeboxes were not level but most were in good shape. Fairways were a bit soft and patchy in places but overall consistent lies. Greens had sand on them and were pretty fast, probably because they had the US Pub Links qualifier last week. Sand was a bit hard and rocky. But I really enjoy this layout, from the Gold tees it plays 7200+ yards and the par 4s are pretty treacherous. But short par 4s and par 5s give good scoring chances. Overall a great value and challenge if you can put up with a lot of rude people and slow play.

I play this course almost every week and it just keeps better and better. For me it's an easy call because I live about 10 minutes from here and I can walk this course for $18.00.

A buddy and I played Brookside #1 for the first time yesterday, going out in a foursome for super twilight, around 3:10. The course is generally flat and good for walking, but it's set on the floor of the arroyo so the surronding hills and nearby mountains give it more visual interest than a flat course. It's reputation for length vs. course #2 is well deserved. Even playing from the whites I found a lot of par 4s from the high 300 to low and mid 400 yard range. While a couple had choke points, most were reasonably open and fairly straight forward if you were a good driver and have length to your game. If you were a shorter hitter, you would have to accept a lot of bogeys or scramble for par, but if you were off line, you went from a probable bogey to double bogey. The few, shorter par 4s presented challenges to offset the lesser distance with the ninth hole probably epitomizing this: strategically placed fairway bunker, strategically placed pond, strategically placed large tree and bunker guarding the right side of the green. Playing that hole felt like playing chess. The greens here tend toward the quick side and are in pretty good shape with minimal ball marks. Most have some slope or shape to them and there are some subtle breaks that can bite you. The fairways were in good muni shape. No bare spots, good roll, well greened but not lush. Bunker sand was good but I found small rocks/pebbles in the mix. The course was busy so the pace was generally consistent but slow. I got through 16 and then it wasn't worth waiting for the groups ahead given the fading light. It's unfortunate, because with a just a little bit of an improvement in the pace, it should have been pretty easy to finish 18. By super twilght, there's not much you can do about it, but for the record I never saw a marshal. Although the beverage cart came around at least a couple of times. Personally, the course doesn't tempt me at full price, but they start twilight at 1:00 pm and super at 3:00, and super was $13 to walk. That's a pretty good deal and I anticipated that if it was busy, 18 probably wouldn't happen. Twilight will get you 18, but it might be a shade tedious. A little frustrated with my swing and results, I did enjoy the round and finally getting to see this half of of the Brookside complex. I will eventually look for another opportunity at a reduced rate. The LA city courses are now about the same price. Brookside is arguably better conditioned and in a nice surrounds, but I don't think the actual layout is any more interesting, and probably less so, than a number of others in the general area. It is a nice course and worth going out so as to form one's own opinion. It defintley has its fans.
