Played yesterday after they had punched and sanded 1/2 of all greens. Actually, not too bad. Just have to play for sand slowing down chips and putts before rolls onto untouched 1/2. Or, you can drop onto clean 1/2 and play equidistant shot. Pace was better than usual: 4 1/2 hours, started about 9:30 am. Chipping and bunker area has been closed for about a month. No word on re-opening date. Rates going up Oct. 1st.

El Do this morning: 7:15 tee time running 15 minutes behind, PoP a bit on the slow side at 4:30, $40 non-res walking rate, $4 for 30 range balls on grass. Poa a bit bumpy mostly due to poorly repaired ball marks more so on the front side. Otherwise, semi quick and true. Good fairway coverage, patchy rough. Bunkers very good and well conditioned. Walkable, accessible, and a decent test from the blacks. Big tree on #10 is gone, really changes that hole design. Not a coot in sight (thanks, Callaway!). Recommended.

El Do is one of my favorite urban courses. It's in remarkably good shape for the traffic it gets. Mature trees around the course make your tee shot placement critical. Greens have subtle breaks, frequent players tell me "it never breaks as much as you think". You must play early to avoid a long round.

Played my GK Cup match with mpisarski01 here on 9/3 @ 9:24. We were off about 20 minutes late.
Overall El Do was in very solid shape. Fairways and rough both had solid coverage with a few patches in the rough that needed some work. You're never going to get a lot of rollout here due to the kikuyu fairways, but lies were consistently good. Most bunkers were in very nice shape. Those that had been renovated had new, white sand. Some still had the regular, crusty brown stuff but there was enough of it to get good lies. Greens were rolling pretty well with a few bobbles by the time the afternoon rolled around. These were probably the firmest I've seen them which took some getting used too. POP was a robust 5:15.
Will continue to come back because it's my favorite muni in the area.

Played at El Do on Saturday with da Boyz, not sure on green fee as this was a pre-pay event. I did get to say 'hello' to the Matt's before their match but both had left the bar before we finished. PoP pitiful teeing off 30 minutes late and got around in 5:20 walking. Course in decent shape, Kikuyu full with a few bare areas more so on the fringe. Rough always a mixed bag here. I was in one bunker, sand was white and bright and smooth. As far as the greens go, I really like how they roll here. Semi-quick and true, just a few poorly repaired ball marks and some soft spike marks, expected when you play in the afternoon. Because of that, my rating will probably be higher than mpisarski's. My only beef is the firmness of the greens, especially on the back nine: most shots landing on the green would release big time (or not) unless you're hitting a high spinner. Even when chipping ... very unpredictable. Considering we were playing the blacks this meant several chip shots from behind the hole. Still a nice flat, walkable layout and I did see that 'Lawnboy' has cut down a few critically placed trees to open the fairways, really changes the strategy off the tee. Recommended and I'll be back for sure.

Gk cup was played here today and this being my first time I put it in the ranks of Costa Mesa CC in quality wise. Its a fun little muni with lots of Kikuyu* everywhere had some strange shots out of the fairway some soft some firm. Rough was the same. Green very bumpy at times but speed was consistent. I would not play here again as its a little cheaper for CM or Mile Square and I like those layouts. POP was also 5.5hr

5:56 tee time this past Saturday (8/20). Walked off 18 a little past 10:00. No complaints on pace of play.

El Do is in great shape. I know it's too much to ask, but I really wish the hackers would appreciate how great these greens are and fix their divots. These greens would be country club quality were it not for these hacks. As it were, greens were fast even that early in the morning.

Tee boxes, fairways, rough, sand traps are all in good shape. This course always kicks my arse but I am looking forward to coming back soon.

Back at El Do early on a Friday to beat the heat, PoP a bit slow today due to a pitifully slow 5-some that teed off at 6:15 (some folks need to learn how to play in position when going out early). Round was 4:30 ... $40 walking non-res rate.

Found the course in very good condition tee to green. LB Open next week so they're working on the course and dumping a lot of water on it, too. Greens were real nice Poa with the only knock being poorly repaired ball marks ... rolling a trifle on the quick side and true. Was in a couple greenside bunkers, real fluffy and well conditioned light sand, somewhat damp in the morning. Fairways were mostly full and green, some patchy areas of hard pan but nothing drastic. Rough the usual mixed bag: playable, but unforgiving if you land in some of the thicker Kikuyu.

Marshal out a bit late, putting water in the igloos and keeping things moving. Cart girl out early, too, anticipating a hot one. Very glad we got off the course by 11am.

I'm giving El Do a big thumbs up right now, really enjoyed playing from the black tees early without much roll out ... good test for an amateur. Highly recommended.

Had a tee time on Sunday, 7/17/16 at 9:08 am. Teed off around 9:30 am. Pace of play was just about 5 hours but it was probably our group that was slowing down the pace. Sorry if you happen to be behind our group on this particular day.

Tee Boxes - Mostly level with good coverage. No problem finding a good spot to tee off.

Fairways - There were some bare brown spots here and there but mostly in decent condition. I did encounter a GUR sign located between the edge of fairway and a fairway bunker one hole but it didn't have ropes around it so I couldn't tell whether it was the fairway (which looked good around that spot) or the bunker that was under repair.

Rough - Most 1st cut was decent and good coverage. But outside that, the condition is hit and miss. A lot of bare areas and tree roots hidden underneath. However, you are supposed to get penalized for not hitting your shots onto the fairway, right?

Bunkers - The ones I got into were in decent shape. Most bunkers were smooth and raked. They were not compacted like some I've seen on other courses.

Greens - For a busy SoCal city course, I thought the greens were in good shape. Not terribly slow but not too fast. There were some but not too many unrepaired ball marks. No bouncy putts or putts that change direction all of a sudden.

The weekend morning rate I paid was $66. I'm not sure if I'd come back to play at that rate. Most public courses in this caliber charges between $45 and $55 with some deals to be found online. At $66, I think you can find better courses.
