The way Rancho San Joaquin aerifys the greens is very smart. They aerify only half of every green and then they put the pin in the good half of the green. When you get within 15 to 20 feet of the hole, you always have a pure putting surface to putt on.

When you are 30 or 40 feet from the hole, its no fun to putt through the sand, but I never expect to make those putts anyways.

Right now, the back of every green has been aerified. I think in 2 or 3 weeks, they will do the front once the back has healed.

Gosh, this course is one of those 'let's just play here because it's convenient' places. Not much of a challenge length-wise but due to the uneven and scrappy surroundings it does challenge your shot... Continue »

Gosh, this course is one of those 'let's just play here because it's convenient' places. Not much of a challenge length-wise but due to the uneven and scrappy surroundings it does challenge your shot making ability. Bunkers aren't in too bad of shape but most have multiple footprints, greens uneven and difficult to read ... kind of a beginners course. I played for the second time and will probably not come back, but you be the judge.

They have two par 3's right next to each other and they are almost the same whole, just one club longer due to the hill hieght. I have played for as little as 25, and I still would rather play somewhere else. They try to get $72-full price on a weekend, that should be a crime!

Considering the weather we've had this past week, I was duly impressed. Yes, standing water all over the course. (but SO has EVERY OTHER COURSE from Pebble to Torrey Pines!) That said ... The course is in really nice shape. My partner and I (Buckeye Bob) got a special for $35 with cart AND they tossed in a FREE lunch!! The greens are still in as good, if not better shape, than other courses in our area. It was winter rules all the way, but I feel that the course played very well all things considered. I still feel that this is one of the best values for the dollar spend right now in OC! Especially when you can play a 6400+ yard course for less than $40.00!!!

For the OC this is a good deal. First time playing here and I like the layout. I just wish it was in better condition, as the course was wet with alot of standing water. I will come back and play it a... Continue »

Play this morning, 10am tee time, pace was good 4 1/2 hrs, overall I was impress with this course after all the bad reviews. The greens make this coures tough , all of the pin placements were in tough places, if not insane! No level or easy puts! I would recommend this course to anyone who hasn't played it in awhile. Be close to the pin and below the hole or three putt! Will be back now that I have a better feel for the layout!

This course is lookin' fine!!! I haven't played this course in a few months and a friend of mine and I decided to give it a shot. (He'd not played the course before.) Wow! I HAVE played here on several occasions and overall thought it a pretty decent value for the dollar spent. We got a 10:00AM tee time for $42.00 WITH cart from Golfnow.com. I was VERY pleasantly surprises to see the course in some the best shape it's ever been in.

Yes, there was a few bare spots. But considering that the course was built back in 1969 on a sealed landfill, (that occasionally leaks a bit of methane gas when it rains and that gas burns the grass in spots), AND considering that the course get a lot of use, I was very pleased to see how nice the course looked! The greens are in SWEET shape dispite tough pin placements and the tee bxes looked good too. I've never seen the course look this good! I WOULD GET IT WHILE YOU CAN FOLKS!!

I have to disagree with the last poster about the greens this weekend. I could tell that they have recently been verticut and they were rolling about as pure as I have ever seen them at Rancho. I teed off around 12, played in 4 1/2 hours or so, overall a really good day.
