Decided to play RSJ again as it had been a while. Normally I steer clear of this course because of all the back nine play. It's tough to finish the front nine quickly only to find the back loaded. Wasn't too bad this time. (Maybe the cold weather kept play down?)

The course is getting better! Most of the greens rolled well and had decent speed. Still have some issues in the fairways and rough, but not too bad. Bunkers were hit or miss. Staff was accommodating as usual, and senior rate makes playing here reasonable

They have friendly marshalls now that seem to do a good job and we enjoy the course it does have a few rough spots but all and all its a fun place to spend a the day

8:00 am tee time on a Wednesday. Lot of rain yesterday so the course was "cart path only" on all holes, but we still finished in 4:15. Grass on fairways is coming in nicely, rough was really long since it hasn't been mowed in several days.

Aerating and sanding of greens started this morning. Doing half the green at a time which seems reasonable, but putting through loose sand is pure guesswork. And pitch shots that land on the loose sand die immediately.

We play here once or twice a year and it's showing signs of being in better shape than usual . The new grass is in and looks good and the greens are slow but in good shape . 60 bucks is still to much... Continue »

The new grass is in and looks good and the greens are slow but in good shape . 60 bucks is still to much for this course and the weather in Irvine can be nasty in the summer . the ted boxes and rough here are poor. But if you can't hit it straight you might love this place. I will play here again but with a coupon only

Played here yesterday for the first time in 20 years. I shot 80 with two doubles.

The good: very walkable flat course with some interesting holes. The greens are well tended with multi tiers and incredibly sloping undulations that may have you putting with your back to the hole on occasion. They protect par here with their difficult greens. Their practice facilities are above average with a nice chipping area behind the range.

The bad: they don't open the range until 7 so early risers have to go down there and shag some balls to hit to warm up. They are in the midst of a re-sodding of their fairways. There are major swaths of all fairways that you literally can hit off--free drop. Definately wait until this project is completed (?) until you try this one. The practice greens are perfect and fast. Then you hit the course and the greens are very slow, nothing like what you warmed up with. The course for whatever reason is sopping wet with standing water in almost every fairway. Rough in many spots is way over grown to past my knees (I'm 6-2).

This course was designed by William Bell and it is a classic parkland layout. Many doglegs, bunkers in the middle of fairways and water coming way into play on several holes. If you hit a bad shot and it's not swallowed up by water hazards or the swamp like conditions besides many fairways, then you can find it and most often have a shoot to the green. Surprisingly for a course built 50 years ago there aren't very many mature trees. A few of the holes make a loop through condos on the back nine, which are a bit gimmicky and not up to the design par of the rest of this track.

I would definately play here again but not for at least six months. This is a very short course that's about 6500 from the tips. It's very player friendly especially from tee to green. A good place to take your buddy struggling to break 90 for the first time.

Played 4/8/15. New owners have improved drainage and although it had rained the night before the course was in pretty good shape with a few muddy spots in the rough. Overall the fairways are much improved with grass now growing where there used to be bare spots.
Sand in the traps was wet and heavy and trying to explode the ball out was an exercise in futility.
Greens had been aerated and sanded on the front half. Sand was quite thick in some spots which really affected approach shots.
Pin placements were horrible on four greens. Holes were placed on steep parts of slopes or bowls and lag putts to within a foot didn't hold and rolled 15-20 feet away. Not a fair test of golf unless they add windmills and clowns.
But with the $32 special ongoing (green fees, cart, lunch, two beverages) I can't complain.

The staff is nice here, never had a problem with them. The practice facility works if you don't mind mats. Other than that, I can't say anything positive about RSJ.

Tee'd off as the first group on a Saturday morning, played the front at what should be POP everywhere, but it's not, of 1.5 hours. When we approached the 10th tee, there were multiple groups on the tee box waiting. I found this strange, so I asked the starter what was going on and he replied "They are playing the back 9 only".

I find it incredibly pathetic and greedy that RSJ would let groups play the back after a certain time in the morning. The reason people wake up so early and pay the premium rack rate at courses is for one simple reason, Pace of play. We get up that early and tee off in the dark so we don't have to wait. Again, pathetic RSJ. When I questioned this to the starter he had no words to say back, just sat there.

I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone who actually enjoys golf.

Played today with the Senior deal(cheap rate, lunch & Beers!). For the life of me I can't understand why the owners don't dump some money in this course. With its location and the proximity to two very over-priced courses this place could be something..At any rate we got off on time and the fairways on the front nine were pretty beat (they usually are). Greens were really pretty good. Ball rolled pretty well. I really like the back nine on this course. Fairways are much better. Only play this course if you get a deal and you'll have a good time.

Played 2/15/15 as a single walk-on and got out within 30 minutes. Slow play on the front nine, better on the back. Had marshall on first tee, which moved things along. Greens were very good with much slope. Fairways uneven with bare spots with nominal rough. No cart girl, but they have internet specials which include lunch with drink at the turn. Easy to get out as a single and reasonably priced weekend golf.
