Despite the brutal heat today, it was an enjoyable round at Canyon Crest with an SCGA member outing. A rare weekend outing and a great price of $55, so a no-brainer for me. They have another one on Saturday, Nov. 1, so I would recommend checking it out, especially if you haven't played the course before. Shotgun start at 9am and we were second group to go off on hole 15. Pace a bit slow at a little under 5 hours, which unfortunately is the norm in these outings. Otherwise, Brenda does a great job setting these up and she was hustling all around today giving people fresh ice and water to keep cool. Anyway, I thought the course was in very good overall condition despite the freak hurricane-level storm that recently rolled through and did a lot of damage. Sadly there are dozens of downed trees throughout the course, so they have a lot of work left to clean things up and it always sucks to lose so many trees on a nice old layout like this. Beyond that, the tee boxes, fairways and rough were nice and anything around the fallen trees/branches was a temporary GUR. Bunkers good with a coarse sand. Greens very nice. Not as fast as they looked, but still rolling pretty smooth, receptive on approaches, etc. I didn't know much about the course coming in, but I really enjoyed the layout. Kind of a classic Inland Empire feel with a nice mix of holes and elevation changes. It's definitely worth checking out if you get a chance to play, especially at the price we paid today.
