Played Torrey North on Wednesday as the last round of the San Diego swing. Overall the conditions are pretty good. Fairways are great. Nice and lush throughout without any thin or brown areas that I saw. Greens, were flowering but still rolled fairly smooth albeit at a much slower pace than Aviara. Not sure if Aviara greens were that fast or Torrey was that slow but a huge difference between the two. Tee boxes were level with ample coverage. Bunkers were also great as you would expect from a course of this quality. Rough was absolutely BRUTAL! Not that deep but super sticky and would grab your club.

I’m not a huge fan of the layout as there are only a few interesting holes. Most are just dead straight with little to no trouble. I get the no trees between the fairways as it keeps the view opened up to enjoy the scenic ocean below. But some dog legs here and there would hurt. Put in a water hazard on the par 5’s for a forced carry on second shot? Something to make you think. Just my opinion is all.

Played Torrey yesterday...was about the 4th group off.

Fairways are still in amazing shape. Phenomenal coverage and sponginess allowing you to take divots. Even as they were doing work, they were cleaning to make sure the fairways were phenomenal.

Greens - was not quite as impressed here. Bumpy, sandy, just not super impressed with them. Most rolled alright but for a few of them, it definitely shaped the opinion of the course.

Rough - man this place is hard. Hard to find your ball, hard to tell how hard to swing out of it, just made it tough overall. Add to it - all the clippings from the fairway being blown out to the rough, made it harder to walk and find your ball.

Bunkers - was in 2. 1 geeenside on no. 1 and a fairway on no. 17. Greenside was terrible. Next to no sand in it. Watched my partners play out of several as well, and they had the same though. After the turn though, the bunkers seemed a lot better. Much more sand and easier to play out of.

Pace of play - we walked and were done in about 4.40. At the turn, the guy told us we were behind even though we were on top of the group in front of us and had no one behind us for several holes.

If I was a local, this would be my favorite course. Being that I'm not, I think the north is the only one I'd play here. Not trying to pay 300 for the south when there's other courses with similar views for costs significantly less up the coast.

Perfect day at TP North. Cool early then warming up into full sunshine. Went off at 9:18 and finished in just under 4 hours. Check in a breeze, everyone nice and friendly. Show respect get respect, period.
Tee boxes: mostly level, wide and clean.
Fairways: almost perfect with good rollout and ball sits up nice
Rough: cut down to a pretty uniform 3”, still sticky and penal
Bunkers: well maintained with great sand coverage
Greens: if it weren’t for ball marks, I fixed dozens, the greens were near perfect. Accepting, great roll and FAST!
POP: like I said just under 4 hours so excellent
Customer service: great, saw the snack cart twice on both sides. Check in smooth and professional
Recommendation: of course, much better for city residents, but hey we pay taxes! Views, playing conditions, the vibe . . . it’s my favorite golf facility.

Day 2 of the San Diego trip landed me at Torrey Pines North course. This is the second time playing here and it’s a nice course but other than the ocean views nothing spectacular. Again the views or great so this review is more about the actual course itself. The layout is pretty ho hum with a number of been there done that holes. They change up the length of the holes which are all pretty much straight. There’s no real danger if you spray the ball of the tee sans a couple of holes. In fact you are often rewarded with an open shot if you spray it “too” far off line.

Condition wise it was decent. Fairway’s are narrow. Let me clarify that. They are hosting a top amateur tournament in a month or so so the actual thin fairway is narrow. However the landing area with the rough which isn’t too penal is fairly generous. As mentioned before, if you go outside of that, you often land in the adjacent fairway. there are only a few trees on the course to get in you way.

Coverage on both the fairways and rough were fine. The last time I was here, the greens were very slow. They were faster today but still only rolled at a medium pace. The greens don’t have too much undulation. Just enough to challenge you but still very fair. The greens were riddled with pitch marks. Both repaired and not fixed. We tee’d off at 7am so my guess is most of the pitch marks were from the previous day.

No issues with the tee boxes or sand traps. Both were of sufficient quality.

Combining the price and conditions to that of Spanish Bay, I’ll take Spanish hands down. However, when in San Diego, Torrey isn’t a bad option. Especially if you can get the resident rate.

Lucked into a noon tee time this morning. Times are tough to come by these days. You must continually check the city app waiting for someone to give up a time. That being said it’s worth the hassle as this is a great course, location, condition, layout and challenge. It was a perfect postcard kinda day and the conditions were solid all around. The greens were a bit hard and the poa annua is creeping in, the greens are splotched with it. They roll well, but not perfect. Maintenance is coming up at the end of the month.

Played yesterday as part of the mens club. Teed off at 7:30 and it was a tad nippy out there to start. The sun did come out and felt a little better. Conditions are still pretty solid. It had rained on Monday so the greens seemed to be a bit more receptive. If it hadn't it seemed like they'd be pretty firm. I did notice that the poa seems to be peaking through on the greens so some putts could be a little bumpy. Green speed was about medium not too outrageous.

Rough is still juicy. I did lose 2 balls in them and I didn't hit it too far off the fairway. I was able to hit a wood on 10 so it just depends on the luck of the draw.

Fairways were good but they certainly seemed tighter being this close to the tournament. Some divots out there but most looked as if they had been filled or maybe I didn't hit enough fairways to notice.

Wasn't in a bunker but they looked decent.

Finished right around 4 hours so pace wasn't an issue that early. I believe they are punching the first couple weeks of March so conditions are pretty good to play if you can get a time.

Played the North course on Wed 12/28 for the first time ever. I had played South about 12 years ago. Was nervous about the weather until a couple days beforehand things started to turn in our favor. Our tee time was 10:36, and we had overcast conditions prior to the round and for the first few holes (no fog thankfully!), and then after that, it was the must amazing sunshine and blue skies for the rest of the round. The North course is just stunning in terms of ocean views on pretty much every hole, and the back nine really shows off the geography and layout. The course conditions were pretty incredible, as they are preparing for the Farmers tournament in a few weeks. I never knew what PGA Tour rough was like until this day, and now I understand how amazing it is for the pros to be hitting long irons out of rough and into the greens only feet away from the cup. As an amateur playing this course, it's such an advantage to hit the fairways, so that's my advice to anyone who is playing in these conditions. Greens were pretty much perfect and mostly fair. I spent the first few holes putting very timidly and that was a mistake. The green speeds were medium fast, and you need to pay attention to the grain, but if you have a decent look, don't be afraid to just go for it. I avoided all the bunkers surprisingly, so can't comment on the conditions although some of my partners complained that they weren't at even resort-course level. Oh, and because of the course setup with the rough right now, they are playing a local rule where if you hit a ball into the rough and cannot find it within 1 minute of searching, you can have a free drop at the place where you believe the ball to be. That's how long the rough is I guess. I only had to drop once for this reason, and I'm pretty certain that another group that thought they hit into the same area played my ball anyway. But it's nice to feel like you can just drop without penalty and keep the pace moving along. Not sure if that's a year round thing or just when the Tour is coming into town.

Played here a couple of times over the past week. Once was a casual weekend round and one was a weekday mens club event. Shockingly the weekend was a horrendous pace. Took close to 5 hours teeing off at 7:45ish. The weekday round was better at a 4:15 pace and we teed off at 7:20ish. There was a group holding up the weekend round, guys thought they owned the course I guess.

The greens were different both rounds due the rain we had earlier this week. They were rolling pretty firm prior to that. I even chipped a ball that landed just a few feet on and had it roll off. Conversely if you land a ball short the grass just gobbles up the ball and doesn't release as much. With the rain the greens did soften up but I'd imagine it will revert back after it dries out a bit. For as firm as the greens were I don't think the pace was super fast but probably a good above average pace. I did repair quite a few ball marks.

Fairways were good. Some wet spots after the rain and they have tightened it up a little in preparation for the tournament. There is some unrepaired divot damage out there. I wish they would have bottles of sand for the walkers to carry.

Rough is getting thick. While its not the thickest it is certainly on its way. As a group we did lose a couple balls in there. They did cut down the rough during the week and even though it was cut it is still juicy and not all areas are cut down.

Tee boxes are generally good but there are a couple of tee boxes that there was no grass. All the course had to do was move it up or back a couple of yards and it would be fine but it seems like they've left it in the same spot for a month.

Sand in my opinion is the worst part of the course. I can't understand why there is 2 feet of sand on the face of the trap and yet minimal sand on the flatter/bottom parts of the traps. A couple of plugged lies and balls on down slopes sorry but this falls on the course staff for this type of maintenance.

Tee times are still impossible to come across unless you get one at the last minute. Looks like they are pretty booked up a month in advance.

Greens are better but still not completely recovered from the punching. The fairways and rough are mostly brown and ready for overseeding which is still 2 weeks away. Honestly it seems like its ready for overseeding now. I wasn't in any bunkers but they looked decent and I did see maintenance guys raking them this morning.

At this time I can't recommend this to anyone in its current state. You're definitely better off waiting until November.
