Played Wednesday, February 7, 2007. Back playing the Vineyard after a long layoff. Still has a great clubhouse and practice area, staffed by attentive and pleasant people.

The course was surprisingly busy for a mid-week, mid-day round, but moved out reasonably well. 4:45 for the round.

Tee boxes need some attention, as there are many, MANY divots. Fairways in very good condition, given winter situation. Greens pocked, as usual, since most golfers STILL don't fix their ball marks. Still rolled true and were very quick. Tricky pin placement, too, so made for an interesting putting day!

All in all, a fun day on a pleasant course.

Vineyard is such a fun course. The course immediately presents some unique challenges, from the tight fairway on the first to a challenging dogleg with water on the left on the second to a par-3 third over water onto a green that usually places the pin close to the water. The back nine features an uphill-all-the-way tenth that will make you club up to approach the green, finishing with a fun downhill drive on 18 that is trouble if you go right. The greens are fast, but usually well-manicured.

Played the Vineyard on Sunday 11/5 at 6:30 AM. Well, this is my first time back to the Vineyard in almost a year. I had sworn off this course after repeated outings when the rounds took 5 - 6 hours to complete. We went our at 6:30 am and were the 4th group out. I'm pleased that play took 4:10 minutes. However, by the time we finished our round there were people making the turn and coming in and complaining about the slow play. The course seems very poplular with Asian tourists, many who seem relatively new to golf - not sure if this what contributes to the slow play, the course layout, or Sunday muni players. That's enough of a rant - now the course.

One of the other reasons I swore off this course was due to the overall poor shape of the course. Well, I'm pleased to report that the course was in great shape.

Positives:
1. the tee boxes were in great condition. They were reseeded about a month ago so some of them were a little long. But more importantly, they were level and it was easy to find a nice spot in the box.
2. the fairways were in great shape. The rye grass has come in beautifully and it was very full.
3. the greens were in great condition. Theycould have used a quick mow, but the Poanna rolled very true, but just a touch on the slow side. The crew, or the golfers did a good job of repairing ball marks.

Negatives:
1. the rough was extremely high - I'm talking US Open high. Shots off the fairway were sometimes very difficult to find. Everyone in our group had at least one lost ball in the rough. At the end of our round I asked the guys in the clubhouse about it and they explained that their 2 rough mowers have been down for several days.

2. the bunkers were inconsistent from hole to hole. It was obvious that they have tried to "fluff" the sand, but some bunkers were pretty thin.

All in all, I wouldn't let these minor negatives keep you away. However, I would strongly suggest you get up early and snatch one of the first 5 or 6 tee times - nothing later than 7:00 am.

Played a tournament round at Vineyard on Aug. 20. Although the course did call and change our tee times less than one full day before the tournament...earlier by an hour...they made good with some nice freebies as their way of saying "Sorry!"

Fairways are in decent shape, if a bit wet in places. Greens are oddly a mixed bag. Some mowed, some shaggy; some rolled, some bumpy as hell. The tremendous number of ball marks speaks more about us as players than AGC as managers. All in all the day was enjoyable (since my foursome won!) If AGC can fix a few things about the Vineyard, it can return to it's former status as a MUST PLAY. Right now, it's still a MIGHT PLAY IF I CAN GET ENOUGH OF A DISCOUNT.

How many five-somes can you send off the first tee. 6 minute tee times on holiday and weekends....Marshalls that don't do a thing but look for lost balls. Vineyard used to be a great place to play. Things have gone downhill since American Golf took over. The GM--I think Monica is her name is a nutcase. You talk to her about a complaint and she just stares at you with that "deer in headlights" blank stare.

Chalk another ruined course up for American Golf. I had not played the Vineyard in many years and am not sure when American Golf took over the management. I do know that the condition of the course now rates right up there with Chula Vista, Mission Trails, Oceanside, and the rest the courses that American Golf continues to run into the ground. The setting for the Vineyeard has matured nicely and is now quite pretty. The gnats that everyone mentioned seem to have subsided a bit and were only a problem on the front nine. Pace of play was pretty good for a Sunday at about 4:20. The layout is a bit goofy but not to the point of not being enjoyable. The condition of the course is the reason that I WILL NOT RETURN until American Golf is gone. The greens were like putting on a cheese grater. There were tons of ball marks(players must take some responsibilty for this), dead spots and areas where it lookked like birds had pecked holes in the green. The bunkers were soaking wet and the fairway bunkers on the back nine par 5 had hundreds of tracks from dogs or coyotes. Several diffent types of grasses growing randomly and the rough was very inconsistent in length. With so many excellent and reasonably priced courses in the San Diego area, there is no reason to play here.
