Played Simi Hills this weekend for an SCGA tournament through Rancho Park Golf Club and was not disappointed in anything other than my driving and putting! In days past it used to be quite easy to get tee times at this little gem of a course, but that's not been the case recently, so I was thrilled to sign up for this event when I saw it on the calendar months ago.

I played from the gold tees and my group had a noon starting time under hazy skies that soon gave way to a beautiful blue and one of the best early days of the spring. The fairways are in very nice shape right now and you'll get very good roll on your ball on tight fairways. The rough was very playable and not too thick at all. Bunkers were in quite good shape and I had no problem getting the club underneath the ball, while the tee boxes were all in very nice condition.

The greens were super challenging for me on this day and I'm not exactly sure why, but they were quite fast and very difficult to read, but rolled true, held shots and their lines well. For the life of me I can't understand how I just could not get the pace down all day, but that's golf sometimes. But overall they are in excellent shape.

The layout at Simi Hills is very fun and engaging with each hole presenting its own unique set of challenges. And the usually dormant creek that runs through holes at the start of the back nine was an actual river - something I don't think I'd ever seen here before, so that was quite stunning and cool to see and listen to throughout the round.

Facilities at Simi Hills are very good but must admit that the driving range is very small with only probably about 18-20 stalls max. Strange with so much land around, but I'm sure there is a reason for it. I'm sure on normal days that's fine but with a large SCGA tournament it was difficult to find a spot to warm up.

POP was pretty solid throughout the day despite the tournament conditions, meaning we finished in about four and a half hours, and there was cart service throughout the day providing everything we needed. No GPS on the carts though in case you're wondering.

Always love coming out to Simi Hills and can't wait for the next tournament here again.

Out Wednesday 6/14, @1:30 as a twosome paired with a twosome, and playing the gold tees. Conditions overall at this course are usually solid and such was the case. Tees had good coverage and none significantly less than level. Fairways had good coverage and lies, leaning a tad more tight than lush with decent rollout. There could be some variance in the rough — mostly lush, could frequently cost you a shot, but rarely can't-find-my-ball deep. However, far enough off line you can get into natural areas that are a whole 'nother story. I was in at least three bunkers and they were in good shape as far as grooming and sand quality. Closely mown areas leading up to the greens could be a little tight, but otherwise the surrounds offered good opportunities to get up and down. The greens were clean and on the quick side. There can be nuanced breaks to consider for a little extra challenge.

It was busy, check-in was easy and the pace was about five hours but mostly steady. Started out grey and cool, got sunny and warm, then sunny and breezy, and finished grey, cool and zero wind. Interesting day weather-wise. Got out with a cart for a senior rate of $45 which I thought a good deal for an interesting course in good shape. Recommended.

Played 4-28-23 early morning for $40 walking as a foursome , and finishing in a little over four hours. Tee boxes were in below average shape had to search for a level spot on some, with some of them having large and small bare spots. Fairways were in good shape mostly lush with some minor thin spots and some roped off areas that are still to wet, they had decent roll out and provided a nice surface to hit from. Rough was in good condition, 2-3 inches and thick in some areas. Was in one greenside bunker that had a nice layer of brown sand. Greens were in just okay shape, playing semi-soft and rolling medium pace with an occasional bump. Overall course is in just okay shape but still fun to play.

My girlfriends and I had a wonderful day a little chilly though. The Pro Shop Personnel were very nice and accommodating. Will go back again.

Played here yesterday with Nickesquire. I would like to start out by giving Simi Hills a big thank you for customer service! First, we had a 6:40 am tee time, but Nick was going to be late. The starter, Jack, was very accommodating and gave me an option of sending me out as a single or seeing if another twosome at 7:30 would like to switch. We made the switch, and everything worked out there. Later, on the 10th tee, we were approached by staff who asked if anybody lost a phone. I had no idea that I dropped my phone, and this really was super helpful! He waited to see me open it up to verify it was mine.

I really like Simi Hills as there are a variety of holes with elevation changes, medium fast undulating greens, and an interesting layout. Overall conditions were probably a 7/10. We played the Gold Tees, walking for $28 Senior rate.

Greens: Medium fast and soft enough to hold most any good shot. Not many ball marks, but I fixed a few here and there.

Fairways and rough: A good mix of Bermuda/kikuyu. Cut enough on the fairways to get you some roll and just thick and long enough in the rough to make it interesting. There are some areas that are not irrigated any more or have little coverage so expect to see some bare ground if you are hitting wild shots.

Tees: We played the Gold tees. They were fairly level and had good coverage of turf.

Bunkers: We found a few and they all had good sand which was well groomed. It was easy to hit from them.

Cart service began sometime after 9:00 on a Friday, so that's a plus. Being less than an hour drive from my house, and offering senior rates on a Friday will get me back out here soon.

Walked the Golds (6381/70.4/125) for 2 GK Cup matches today. 4H 15M morning POP, playing with Kevin, Derrick and Eric. 4H 25M afternoon POP playing with John, Dennis and Alan. Clear, breezy and around 95. SH is a fun layout to walk and play with few tees far from the last green. Front is hilly, back is flat with tree lined fairways plus a few lakes to keep things interesting. Medium difficulty course almost always in decent condition @ reasonable prices. Tees some lush and pristine, some just decent, but none were bad. Kikuyu fairways mostly good coverage with a few hardpan areas marked as GUR. Kikuyu rough more hit and miss. Not overly tall but often the uncertainness of what lie you will draw is the penalty. Throw in some wood chip areas where they did a turf reduction several years ago to water less that can be challenging to play off of. Sand traps well maintained with medium to large grain brown sand. They play better than they look, sand shot after sand shot from our groups were good. Greens were excellent. Smooth, medium fast and firm, downright quick on downhillers. They held approach shots well. Customer service was very good from all. Drink cart gal around several times, open restaurant. Large practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Decent driving range with mats 5/7 days. Excellent club repair facility beside the driving range that is usually manned. Recommended.

Played 4-14-22 early morning walking as a single for $38 joining a threesome and finishing in a little under 3 1/2 hours. Tee boxes were okay, mostly level, semi-lush with some divot damage on par threes. Fairways for the most part were in decent shape, mostly lush with some small bare spots with decent lies and good roll out. Rough was not that much longer than the fairways and in about the same condition. Was not in any bunkers but they looked well groomed with brown sand. Greens were completely healed from being punched. They were rolling smooth at medium fast pace and playing semi-soft. Haven't played here in about two years and I don't know why. Good layout, some minor elevation and a few water holes make this a fun easily walkable course.

Simi Hills 02/21/22, 10:55 tee time an finished at 3:38. Holiday rate $67 to ride/shared. As many know, this course gets a lot of play. Fairways has a few GUR and thinning areas on some holes. Teeing grounds were not overly chewed up and had ample spots to tee it up on grass. #7 had a major bunker renovation with a big machinery. I was only in one bunker on the last par three and it had plenty of sand. The greens were smooth and fast. With the exception of the unfixed ball marks, it’s good. Fun day at Simi today.!

Played in my first SCGA single-day tournament on Saturday at Simi Hills and found the course to be in its usual good shape from tee to green. I was forced to play from the tips (black tees) since it was my first event so that made it a much more challenging round. I did really enjoy the competitive aspect of the round and the fact there were no gimmees handed out.

I've always really enjoyed the layout at Simi Hills and this weekend was no exception, even though the course takes on a whole different shape when playing from the black tees, especially on holes like the par 3 7th where you're up on the hill high above the green. But overall it's just a really fun track that will put every club in your bag to good use.

Greens are currently in really nice shape, rolling fast and true. They do hold shots pretty darn well, too. Any downhill putts were quite the adventure and I had trouble getting the pace right all afternoon (to the tune of three 3-putts). Fairways are in good shape mostly everywhere but there were some thin areas and a few waterlogged ones as well. I was only in a few bunkers but they were more than adequate. Tee boxes were in good, flat level shape.

POP as one would expect in a tournament was definitely on the slow side coming in at just under five hours, but we kept pace with the group in front of us all afternoon. It just takes a little more time when every putt is analyzed to death and forced to find the hole. Cart service was outstanding, coming around at least every 3-4 holes with two different groups. Amazing.

Practice areas at Simi Hills are relatively small but get the job done, and the range is more than good enough even though it's kind of slightly wedged between the hillside and the clubhouse. It's fine though and could use a ball upgrade. But other than that, just another really great day at Simi Hills and I will always recommend this place for a fun round.
