After hearing and reading all the hype, finally played the Wolf on 7/29/2007 on a clear, hot day. Disneyland in Mesquite! Read many posts on this site and others about how this was the best course ever. We caught the course in a good mood – only mild breezes today, while I know that 30-40 mph winds are not uncommon, so we got lucky. Course condition was pretty good – greens were receptive and not as quick as some others in this area that are allowed to be dry, hard and really fast. Rough could be hard to hit from and was 2-4 inches deep in some areas, especially around the large greens, which made recoveries difficult. Also, because of the canyon terrain, many shots from the rough are on severe slopes where you have the ball up at your knees or well below your feet – these are difficult even without the wire bristle rough. Managed to avoid the sand traps, but heard comments from playing partners about thin sand. Generally fair layout, with some blind tees shots, and only a couple of holes approaching ‘goofy’ golf. Knowledge of this course is obviously important, and more play should lead to better scores. Some signs that the course could be having financial trouble – manual bag drop, had to beg the starter to dig through his own bag to find a yardage book (a “must” on this course), otherwise he “couldn’t find any”, many cart paths have serious cracks and structural problems. There were 6 or 7 holes roped or curbed off, making for a lot of hiking, difficult in these hilly, hot conditions. Because of this and the course difficulty, pace was very slow – 5.5 hrs, and we weren’t behind. Especially on the back nine, you can find solace from your bad score in looking at the many dozens of balls lining the bottoms of almost any of the arroyos between the holes – many others share your fate! No cart girl, but there’s a snack shack mid-way thru each nine, and you go by the clubhouse at the turn (but very slow service there). Plenty of water available on the course (needed!). Would have been more pleasant in better (cooler) weather, but “in-season” prices are silly. I’ve been there and done that now, and don’t need to do it again.
